What an excellent tip! I'd not come across the use of an envelope before seeing this video. There was a product called a 'Dust Bubble' that came out a few years ago but, I don't see the point, now you can just use an envelope.
Metabo also now do a guide that sits on the wall, keeps your drill square and also collects the dust, I think - but, for £40, you'd have to be giving it a lot of use to justify the expense.
I was certain that Axminster stocked it but, I can now only find it at Toolstop.co.uk. It's listed as "Metabo Dust Extraction Set - Collar Diameter 43mm". I was wrong about the price although, that was what was quoted in an issue of F&C magazine last year... It now costs £72.95 including VAT!!!
Hi mate Thanks for the tips. I am a complete novice at drilling & DIY could you recommend a good cordless drill for a newbie ? and also which wire And pipe dectector are you using? I would like to invest in one too. and where can I purchase them? thanks
For the drill it is difficult to say as there are hundreds to chose from. The detector that I used in this video turned out to be useless and cannot be trusted, so you just have to make sure you drill where there will be no buried wires/pipes.If you follow the links to my forum there is a bargain tool section and some good drill bargains have been posted in there recently. If you want to drill masonry make sure the drill has hammer action. 18v is preferred.
Good tip. I used to cut the bottom off a plastic milk carton and stick it on with masking tape but I'll use an envelope instead now - more flexible and plentiful. Plus cutting the carton was a bit of a pain. Thanks!
Thanks for the comment. You are right, I should of put a pair of safety glasses on before drilling, but I forgot to mention them as the wall was plasterboard.
I'm sure this question has been answered somewhere, but when drilling a 10mm hole through brick do you need to drill a pilot hole first

Not really, but if you are using a really weak drill a pilot will help but most drills will drill 10mm in masonry with ease.
