I think it was a backdraft. Look closely and you will see that the intial igntion occurs outside the room.

It was in Memphis and it was a 2nd alarm fire you could only ladder it from three sides. By todays standards there is a lot of things they could have done different but few big cities did in those days. I was on thew job there in the 70's. In those days paramedics rode ambulances

i'm sorry, but what's the difference between a backdraft and a flashover?

i got so much respect for firefighters btw! really interesting to watch these movies.. to see some of what they're going through

[Note: these are simplified explanations]

A backdraft takes place when air is introduced into a superheated gas environment which has become ventilation-controlled. The fire gases (smoke to explain in simple terms) ignites with violent force.

A flashover takes place when all the combustible elements in a compartment reach ignition temperature and all start burning at about the same time. This is does not imply a deflagration or explosion. Search YouTube for sample videos.

A flashover is when everything is ignited at one point around 1000 degree's. backdraft is when the fire doesn't have enough oxygen then when all the Oxygen is introduced everything lights up

Not sure but I can swear this is the same video I saw about a guy who was crazy and holding himself up in the apartment.

The video I saw had sound and you could hear gas hissing and the commentator said the guy had turned on the gas. When one of the firefighters went to open the window and there was what appeared to be a back-flash but it was the gas exploding.

Not saying that is the same one but it sure seems like it and there is NO sound or comments while the video here is playing.
