it's not a common/popular belief in muslim world regarding this issue. in fact, in the islam websites that does discuss this topic, they refute it as false claim too. i think it's a mistake of the few irresponsible muslims who spread unverified 'claims' n sadly it's spread out as a general 'muslim's claim'.

The central argument behind armstrong is that he supposedly heard prayers whilst on the moon and when he came back to earth, he found it was the shahada (conversion to islam statement)

They've got a pretty good imagination, I'll give them that.
