@20p65s that's a matter of opinion. placing the hearthboard directly on the tinder bundle squishes it down reducing airflow. The hearthboard is not as steady with the tinder bundle under it. fibers can get caught or tangled on the spindle. a couple reasons why people don't do it this way too often. Of course there are benefits as well, but i'm only playing devils advocate.
