I remembered going that mall in 1998 or 99 can't remember, but I do remember that mall was so outdated. It even had the same bench and lamp post the Westminster Mall had.
LOL! I moved out of Colorado in 1997 and now live in Japan. The Malls here are still packed with vendors and customers. Sad to see so many businesses closing down. Not to mention the Malls.
I was one of the last people to walk out before the wrecking balls came. It was myself Troy and David that turn off the lights for the last time. I worked at sixteen different business at that mall over the years. I met my first wife there, we were married at the theater that I managed. I met the woman I left my wife for there. I lived in the offices to the Woolsworth for almost two years. I loved that mall.
Thanks for this - Loved Buckingham Mall - Had my first 2 jobs there and meet my husband working in the mall - so sad to see it go. Loved the memories!
I came here with my mom back in the mid to late 90's to see Santa, when I drove past its location I almost had a heart attack to see it gone :(. I loved the fountains they had all through the mall :)
My Dad met my mom at this mall back in the early 70's. My grandfather owned a big chunk of property on Alton street and the corner of Mississippi. I remember all throughout my childhood being forced to go to this mall with my grandma and mother. I remember the times I wanted to go to this mall because of Santa Clause and because of the big water slide they had there. It used to be my favorite mall when I was a little kid. I threw up in the little cafe next to Woolworth.
i just want to thank the person whos ever responsible for posting this tribute video to the Buckingham Square mall.i use to live in aurora ,colo.during the 80s and in my youth ,would frequent this mall on many occasions. this brings back some wonderful memories thank you!
The arcade was located in some far-flung corner of the mall, just past a nail salon. You'd have to walk through a cloud of acetone fumes just to get there. Inside they had a game called "Splatterhouse" that was darker and gorier than anything I'd ever seen. The combined effect of the chemicals in the air and the horrifying supernatural tone of that game blew my mind. My brother and I would go play it every time our parents took us.
Man it would have been cool to have seen Buckingham Square sadly I live here in KC and all I have are Metro North, Metcalf South and Antioch Shopping Center that are all kinda there, And I remember Bannister when I was a little kid damn shame to see stuff go, and I'm 20 so I didn't get to see they're heydays but I witnessed their demise, which is depressing, I hope all of you find solace in memories for that's all we will have eventually. I hope they build stuff like this again though :D
Thanks for doing this! I used to go to Buckingham Square all the time as a kid in the 70's. I remember that bridge over the fountain, Spencer Gifts and the Pet store. We always went to Bronco Burger or Orange Julias for lunch. I also loved the movie theater.
I remember "Body Talk" in the center core kitty-corner from Picadilly Lane. My mom got me a multicolored leotard/swimsuit with matching skirt when I was six years old. I wore that suit every week to swimming lessons and ever other time I swam. It lasted five years!
I also remember Hydrotube-- it was right next to the Bellco bank for a time, but I never got to go. :(
I hear ya on the cell phone dealers, Aurora Mall errr "Aurora Town Center" has way too many! They heckel you and push their products like crack. I only go to Aurora Mall for the Pappinos Pizza now. Westminster is still open and is really the last of the old malls in Colorado. It's cool I recomend checking it out, but expect crack errr cell phone dealers.
Colorado is in a sad state in terms of old places going away but we still have a few places left. Seek them out!
Cinderella city was the best; I remember it as the biggest place in the world when I was a kid. I really wish I could have documented that mall before it was torn down. We still have Westminster Mall, it was built around the same time as Buckingham and it is still open. New malls suck, full of annoying cell phone dealers and trendy clothing stores.
Buckingham maybe gone but at least it lives on here. That's why I did this.
The former site of the mall is in full redevelopment, and they even have a few new buildings up. I too think these out doors "malls" are shitty. Who wants to shop an outdoor mall in December? Not Me!
I remember going there was I was a kid. I haven't been there since the late 80's. I remember the comic book store, where we use to get baseball cards. Sad to hear its gone!
i was so bummed i didnt see buckingham one last time inside before it got torn down. THANKS SO MUCH!!!! does anyone have a video with pics of the hydro tubes in it?
Well look like they started tearing it down as of today 1-8-08. Good old times there. Are whole family grew up in the village east neighborhood not far away... Our parents house was completed when Buckingham was finished. I will upload the original pics from 1971 and make a montage like you "PumpkinLordJames" and I have some recent photos of the "last days" including the demo.. :(
I remember my family used to go to this mall like every weekend and just walk around enjoying the crowd, THey are going to put apartments there. Bring down property value in the area. Its such crap were already living in saudi aurora. They are just making it worst.
Thanks for the post. They also want to build this outdoor mall like the one across from Aurora Mall. I don't see the point in those places here in Colorado.
On my lst check Forbidden was closed. That leaves Target, A rental place, The Casino Bus, and the Archery range in the old Woolworths. They say demo could start in September, but that is not confirmed.
I remember this mall. It use to be so crowded back in the day, then gradually stores starting closing and now the whole mall. The only thing open is the Target.

Never thought I'd say this, but I miss that place.
Worked there as a teen, in the early 90's, at diary queen.

new malls don't seem to have the same soul as the classics. Colorado mills comes closest that I've seen in awhile.

Great video! I am in the process of documenting a historical shopping mall in my area that will be demolished this year.

It was on the west side, at the end of the wing between center court and Dillards. The same place as Aarons Rentals.
