@ZeroXadvenTz It's related to a crazy idea Sigmund Freud had. Basically, everyone has this metaphorical "force field" that represents their personal space. If a stranger invades that, your primal instinct of fear kicks in and you try to move away. The Angels and Evas have AT fields that they can actually make "real". The whole series has references to Sigmund Freud. Asuka, Shinji and Rei respectively, represent the Id, Ego and Superego.

I liked how extraordinary the evas where but they were never quite invincible. That gave it a nice hint of realism. I equate it with why a lot of people prefer Batman to Superman. Its just more exciting when their life is on the line. Maybe it ties in with that whole Nascar thing, ya know, how they say people mainly go to see the crashes.

Thats one of the reasons I loved the series. It wasnt like other Mecha shows where the characters where spotless, white teather superhoes who dined with death. Shinji was emotionally crippled and yet he was called to do things that pushed boundries in character development that you will rarely in pretty much anything.
