    - Michael -

  • This sounds very sad and angry....and deliberately so.

    Long time no hear.

    Are you ok Sam?

    Paul

  • Wonderful

  • My ! This butterfly is full of telluric energy ,by contrast Bach's piece is soothingly fluid.Light and dark ,water and earth ,your chiaroscuro is succesful ! Bravo, have a good weedk end .Claude

  • Hi Sam, it seems that I have missed your last upload...

    I really enjoy what I listen !

    Thanks a lot

    Daniel

  • the houghton was amazing!

  • Wow Sam!

It looks like the piece has been written for your guitar. It sounds so fantastic.

    Really impressive playing too!

    Thank you for sharing your music;

    Wolfgang

  • ... me again...

The 1007 sounds GREAT in C! YAY! Never saw that before. Clever, my dear.

    Per-Olov

  • Yes, C is good! Stanley Yates must take credit for being "clever" and choosing that key for his transcription. I thought it worked so well I had a go at my own transcription.... I just haven't had time to upload any other movements yet....

    :-sam

  • Dear Sam,

I am so happy to see you back again. Hope your ankle is good again...? I have been traveling with Marie and it's amazing to be back and listen to all the talents here.

This is intriguing and beautiful. If you are not selected for the Cape Town Competition, I don't know who will. Are you going to Sydney too?

    Love,

    Per-Olov

  • Dear Per-Olov,

Good to hear from you! The Houghton is indeed an intriguing piece. It would be nice to play in Cape Town so, fingers crossed... After Cape Town we are all going to Australia for 5 weeks holiday! Yay! We will spend some time with my mum on Magnetic Island (sounds like paradise doesn't it :), and then Sydney for a week, and finally to the west for a few days. I am very excited and can't wait for summer! Look forward to hearing more from you!

    Love

    sam :-D

  • that was so so nice!

  • Thanks Jesse!

    :-sam

  • @josie2u2 Hurray, wonderful! - I'm placing my order for one right now, (Details later...!) since I'm not planning to visit Singapore any time yet!:-) Oh, I did bring back loads of Tiger Balm - enough for daily application for the next twenty years, in fact... Don't know the other stuff - sounds weird;-)

  • 1st piece: absolutely AMAZING! fabulous playing, Sam

  • @mspclassicalguitar

    Thanks! Glad you liked it!

    Best wishes,

    sam :-D

  • 'God of the Northern Forest': A brilliant piece, a great composer and a fantastic, gripping performance! And...love the Bach in C! - Much more echoing the intentions for the Cello, but still 'guitaristic', I find...

How come I was in Asia for five years and never found a beautiful top like yours?:-)

  • Thanks Maria! Glad you like the Houghton piece and the Bach transcription. Oh, and the top...you obviously didn't go to the right shop! That could be the beginning of a poem.... All the best, sam :-D

  • @sammu5 You're right, of course - even without the poetry!... typical me....I probably walked past such shops a hundred times. My friends call me Maulwurf (mole... )

  • Fantastic !!!!

And you look great, love your shirt, nice colour !!!

    Smile from Anne Mari

  • Thanks Anne Marie!

    I like that shirt too!

    Best wishes,

    sam :-D

  • As always Great playing!! :-)

  • Thanks Ed!

    Best wishes,

    sam :)

  • Definitely one of my favourite Houghton pieces, although his Three Duets are also great! You have definitely got those opening chords to sound 'like an anvil'! Well played!

  • Thanks! Glad you are a Houghton fan! Yes, the 2 duets are great too, esp, the Mantis and the Moon!

    Best wishes,

    sam :-D

  • Thank you Sam! I send may email! Merci beaucoup pour la proposition!

    J'aime votre jeu! Ciao!

  • Hello dear Sam!

I am glad again to see you and to listen your wonderful performance.

    Elmar

  • Dear Elmar,

Thanks for your kind comments! And yes, it's good to back!

    Best wishes,

    sam :-D

  • Très belle interprétation et concentration maximum sur la première pièce ! Pour le prélude il est aussi très intéressant dans cette tonalité où peut-on se le procurer?

  • @MrRolando68

Sorry, my French is really awful but it seems like you would like the Bach transcription....? Please send me your email address in a private message and I will send a pdf.

Best wishes, (hope you understand :))

    sam :-D

  • Hi Sam - thanks for playing the very interesting Houghton piece as I had never it before...and the Bach is wonderful and one of my favorites! Nice shirt also!

    James

  • Hi James!

I'm glad someone noticed the shirt :))) I bought it in Singapore a couple of years ago.... I thought it was a good opportunity to wear it :) Glad you liked the music too! Best wishes,

    sam :-D

  • I love Haughton's music i have quite a few of his pieces, this is also a great piece played brilliantly Sam , bravo

  • @fhulkster

Phil's music is full of variety. This is fiercest piece for sure!

    Thanks for watching,

    sam :-D

  • Hey Sam,

it is always a pleasure to listen to you.... Your playing is just adorable!!! Great!!! Hug Sarah :-)

  • Hey Sarah!

Always a pleasure to hear from you!

    Thanks and best wishes,

    sam :-D

  • Nice seeing you ready for another competition. I'd heard your Bach before and it was joy to listen to it again but this is the first time I've listened to any Houghton. I like the tuning, it sounds different, would be very sad piece but your beautiful warm tone brings lights of hope... I couldn't quite catch the Copper butterfly in it, but maybe next time. Thank you for sharing your music.

    Love,

    Gergely

(Sitting Buddha in the background turned into a giraffe???)

  • Hi Gergely!

I just couldn't resist the chance to go and play in Cape Town.... Maybe I will get to see a real giraffe! Phil Houghton is a very interesting composer with a profound understanding of the tonal possibilities of the guitar. I find this very exciting and challenging! The copper butterfly makes an appearance at 2.02....

Thanks for watching and best wishes,

    :-sam

  • I very much enjoyed both pieces. I am partial to Bach on guitar so I especially liked part two. I continue to look forward to hearing more from you.

    Tim

  • Hi Tim,

Thanks for watching! I am looking forward to playing more now that my shoulder and thumb problems are sorted :))) Best wishes,

    sam :-D

  • Great as always! love the sound (as always) and it's not only because of Smallman... ;) very interesting mixture of music! I can't wait to meet Phil (but I can wait just another 70 years) to meet Bach (can wait with that) :)) FINGERS CROSSED! YOU ARE GREAT AND WELL PREPARED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hi Marek!

In 70 years time you might be ready for one of those wigs!!! I love the sounds Phil draws from the guitar...but I still don't manage to find them all.... (btw, I would love to hear you play this piece.) Phil told me not to be so obsessed with it but..... I can't help it. It's fascinating!

    Best wishes,

    :-sam

  • Wonderful contrast, amazing performance! thanks for that, Sammu.

    abraços

  • Dear Ovidiov,

    Quite a change from Dilermando!!!!

    The guitar is great!

    Best wishes,

    :-sam

  • Wow, Sam! You really play fantastic! I love both pieces, but my favorite is the second one!

All the best, my dear friend!

    Glory

  • Hi Glory!

Thanks for your kind words and friendship!

    Best wishes,

    sam :-D

  • Bravo Sam! The contrast is very amazing.

Your Bach is outstanding as ever...

    Good luck!

    Andi

  • Hi Andi!

How are you? Thanks for the support!

    Best wishes,

    :-sam

  • You are becoming a superstar. And justly so, I add! The Houghton piece is enthralling and the Bach is great :o)

  • Hi Peter,

The Houghton piece is v interesting. I like the contrasting sections. And Bach....ah.....Bach! What more can I say! Best wishes,

    sam :-D

  • A two-fer...First one, different...lots of "dissonance"... Ahh, "BMV 1007"...back to familiarity. Great.

    5*

    --Van

P.S. Beautiful songs and a beautiful player.

  • Hi Van,

Quite a contrast! Glad you enjoyed the show!

    Thanks for watching,

    :-sam

  • I enjoyed this video, and its a very interesting pairing of pieces! They fit together well and you played them both great. By the way, I was thinking at first that you were going to try to play the Bach piece with the low F tuning - I'm glad to know I was wrong! Its a very enjoyable transcription.

    Larry

  • Hi Larry,

Bach with an F tuning....hm....could be interesting! Glad you like the transcription. Thanks for watching,

    :-sam

  • Wow, Sam ! What a contrasting pair of pieces. The storm (in a good sense) is followed by the sunshine and tranquillity. Highly effective !

Isn't this the festival that your young friend Lara is auditioning for also ?

With any luck you'll have company on the trip out :o)

Best of luck to both of you !

    Regards

    Jim

  • Hey Jim!

Yes indeed it is the same festival and competition. I made a deal a with Lara that if she had a go so would I.....and since she uploaded her vid a couple of weeks ago I thought....uh...oh....blimmey....I better get on with it...!

    All the best,

    sam :-D

  • Hi Samantha, it's nice to see you again.

The two pieces are a beautiful contrast. The first: exciting and powerful, the second: well known and beautifully ....simple BACH.

    Wonderfully played.

    Best wishes,

    Guenter

  • Hi Guenter,

    Thanks for your kind comments.

    It's good to be back!

    Best wishes,

    sam :-D

  • is that a smallman guitar? wish you like luck in the competition!

  • @karen0444

Hi! Yes, it's a Smallman :))) Thanks for watching!

  • Thanks for the support Josie!

    sam :-D

  • Thanks for the support Josie!

    sam :-D

  • Very interesting music, skilfully presented.

    Thank you for sharing!!

    Tor Inge

  • Dear Tor Inge!

    Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Best wishes,

    :-sam

  • Sam, I find these two piece complementary. The first one brings images of Thor, foggy forests and thunderous power. The second is the serene, mathematical Bach. The waving of the air at the end of the first piece was very interesting while the choice of scale for the prelude is in my opinion optimal for the guitar. By the way your vibratos are amazing. Are you using high or medium tension strings? Thank you very much for this video. Favored! - Athan

  • Hi Athan! Thanks for watching! Glad you like my vibratos :)))

    Best wishes,

    sam :-D

  • Hi Athan! Thanks for watching! Glad you like my vibratos :)))

    Best wishes,

    sam :-D

  • Beautiful playing there. Pleasure to hear and watch you play as well. You have a very nice feel for the guitar. Peace

  • @unfailingpromise

    Thank you!

    Best wishes,

    sam :-D

  • What a wonderful piece by Mr. Houghton! I look forward to hearing more of his pieces played by such a gifted musician as yourself. Good luck with the audition!

    Wilson

  • Dear Wilson,

Yes, PH is a wonderful composer! I enjoy playing his works very much!

Thanks for your support and encouragement!

    Best wishes,

    sam :-D

  • Marvelous, thanks for sharing your audition. What an extraordinary piece of music by Houghton. Guess they had to indefectibly accept after hearing this video!

  • @hyperboreal

Well! I hope so! It'd be fun to play in Cape Town!

    Best wishes,

    sam :-D

  • Well played the two Sebastians Sam :-) I had to listen for a second time. Sounds interesting with the different techniques. Be careful with your thumb nail - we need it next... ;-)

Good luck with the competition - I keep my fingers crossed!

Regards to Spain (PM follows) - Sabine

  • Hi Sabine! Yes, good observation about the 2 Sebastians! And, yes, a very interesting piece. The thumb nail is intact - quite a relief to play Maria's pieces now :))) See you soon!!! :-sam

  • Very well done, Sam. You play with great purpose and definition. I am not familiar with the Houghton composition and I appreciate very much your having introduced it to me. Of course, I also adore this Bach. Your playing style is very distinctive and excellent in both technique and feeling. I always look forward to your new videos.

    Pura Vida!!

    Ron

  • Hi Ron! Thanks very much! I'm glad you found the Houghton interesting. He has some v good pieces!

    Best wishes,

    :-sam

  • Very interesting unusual piece, thumb up.
