very very well played, very beatiful tone colours, charming and super clear, enjoyed every single seconds of this video,my most sinciere cogratulations!!Samantha, regards from Gibraltar,Judah.
My ! This butterfly is full of telluric energy ,by contrast Bach's piece is soothingly fluid.Light and dark ,water and earth ,your chiaroscuro is succesful ! Bravo, have a good weedk end .Claude
Yes, C is good! Stanley Yates must take credit for being "clever" and choosing that key for his transcription. I thought it worked so well I had a go at my own transcription.... I just haven't had time to upload any other movements yet....
I am so happy to see you back again. Hope your ankle is good again...? I have been traveling with Marie and it's amazing to be back and listen to all the talents here.
This is intriguing and beautiful. If you are not selected for the Cape Town Competition, I don't know who will. Are you going to Sydney too?
Good to hear from you! The Houghton is indeed an intriguing piece. It would be nice to play in Cape Town so, fingers crossed... After Cape Town we are all going to Australia for 5 weeks holiday! Yay! We will spend some time with my mum on Magnetic Island (sounds like paradise doesn't it :), and then Sydney for a week, and finally to the west for a few days. I am very excited and can't wait for summer! Look forward to hearing more from you!
@josie2u2 Hurray, wonderful! - I'm placing my order for one right now, (Details later...!) since I'm not planning to visit Singapore any time yet!:-) Oh, I did bring back loads of Tiger Balm - enough for daily application for the next twenty years, in fact... Don't know the other stuff - sounds weird;-)
'God of the Northern Forest': A brilliant piece, a great composer and a fantastic, gripping performance! And...love the Bach in C! - Much more echoing the intentions for the Cello, but still 'guitaristic', I find...
How come I was in Asia for five years and never found a beautiful top like yours?:-)
Thanks Maria! Glad you like the Houghton piece and the Bach transcription. Oh, and the top...you obviously didn't go to the right shop! That could be the beginning of a poem.... All the best, sam :-D
@sammu5 You're right, of course - even without the poetry!... typical me....I probably walked past such shops a hundred times. My friends call me Maulwurf (mole... )
Definitely one of my favourite Houghton pieces, although his Three Duets are also great! You have definitely got those opening chords to sound 'like an anvil'! Well played!
Très belle interprétation et concentration maximum sur la première pièce ! Pour le prélude il est aussi très intéressant dans cette tonalité où peut-on se le procurer?
Sorry, my French is really awful but it seems like you would like the Bach transcription....? Please send me your email address in a private message and I will send a pdf.
Hi Sam - thanks for playing the very interesting Houghton piece as I had never it before...and the Bach is wonderful and one of my favorites! Nice shirt also!
I'm glad someone noticed the shirt :))) I bought it in Singapore a couple of years ago.... I thought it was a good opportunity to wear it :) Glad you liked the music too! Best wishes,
Nice seeing you ready for another competition. I'd heard your Bach before and it was joy to listen to it again but this is the first time I've listened to any Houghton. I like the tuning, it sounds different, would be very sad piece but your beautiful warm tone brings lights of hope... I couldn't quite catch the Copper butterfly in it, but maybe next time. Thank you for sharing your music.
Love,
Gergely
(Sitting Buddha in the background turned into a giraffe???)
I just couldn't resist the chance to go and play in Cape Town.... Maybe I will get to see a real giraffe! Phil Houghton is a very interesting composer with a profound understanding of the tonal possibilities of the guitar. I find this very exciting and challenging! The copper butterfly makes an appearance at 2.02....
Great as always! love the sound (as always) and it's not only because of Smallman... ;) very interesting mixture of music! I can't wait to meet Phil (but I can wait just another 70 years) to meet Bach (can wait with that) :)) FINGERS CROSSED! YOU ARE GREAT AND WELL PREPARED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In 70 years time you might be ready for one of those wigs!!! I love the sounds Phil draws from the guitar...but I still don't manage to find them all.... (btw, I would love to hear you play this piece.) Phil told me not to be so obsessed with it but..... I can't help it. It's fascinating!
I enjoyed this video, and its a very interesting pairing of pieces! They fit together well and you played them both great. By the way, I was thinking at first that you were going to try to play the Bach piece with the low F tuning - I'm glad to know I was wrong! Its a very enjoyable transcription.
Yes indeed it is the same festival and competition. I made a deal a with Lara that if she had a go so would I.....and since she uploaded her vid a couple of weeks ago I thought....uh...oh....blimmey....I better get on with it...!
Sam, I find these two piece complementary. The first one brings images of Thor, foggy forests and thunderous power. The second is the serene, mathematical Bach. The waving of the air at the end of the first piece was very interesting while the choice of scale for the prelude is in my opinion optimal for the guitar. By the way your vibratos are amazing. Are you using high or medium tension strings? Thank you very much for this video. Favored! - Athan
What a wonderful piece by Mr. Houghton! I look forward to hearing more of his pieces played by such a gifted musician as yourself. Good luck with the audition!
Marvelous, thanks for sharing your audition. What an extraordinary piece of music by Houghton. Guess they had to indefectibly accept after hearing this video!
Well played the two Sebastians Sam :-) I had to listen for a second time. Sounds interesting with the different techniques. Be careful with your thumb nail - we need it next... ;-)
Good luck with the competition - I keep my fingers crossed!
Hi Sabine! Yes, good observation about the 2 Sebastians! And, yes, a very interesting piece. The thumb nail is intact - quite a relief to play Maria's pieces now :))) See you soon!!! :-sam
Very well done, Sam. You play with great purpose and definition. I am not familiar with the Houghton composition and I appreciate very much your having introduced it to me. Of course, I also adore this Bach. Your playing style is very distinctive and excellent in both technique and feeling. I always look forward to your new videos.
