I like Abba a hell of a lot. But the Raiders is an earlier an totally different kind of ball game. The Raiders played honest rock just a few years before the hard stuff such as Cream and the Zep got popular. They did real music with a bit of an edge, but were not in the "bubblegum" category. ---for an enjoyable kick, check out "The Music Machine" a bit rougher, but from the same time period.
Love that hard soulful drive from Mark. They did a song about 3 years later called "I don't want nobody to lead me on" with same energy and drive from Mark.
Those "roaches" running the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame keep their heads up their "ices" too often to appreciate and recognize good R & R history paving/making bands like Paul Revere and the Raiders. The R & R Hall of Fame has unfortunately become too much of a "payola" club rather than what it originally began as -- so the hell with them. Keep on ROCKIN' PAUL REVERE AND THE RAIDERS -- YOU'RE IN MY HALL OF FAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A video like this gets them into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? They did some good stuff but I would give them an honorable mention. They were heavily controlled and had thier own tv show. They did not run it-the corporate guys told them what to do. I hope they made some money. Im going to see Paul Reveres raiders next week. I think it will be a good and funny show because they are still into comedy.
What a fantastic tune- I remember this stuff when I was 16 years old, it was the baddest shit EVER! Um, it still is ! I always thought these guys totally ROCKED before groups like Kiss, Led Zep, Alice Cooper, Areosmith came out,-Loved them too, but Paul Revere & the Raiders deserve all the accolades as well !
@nzmoores I understand ABBA, they outsold the Beatles in Europe. But, Doctor John...? I liked Doctor John I even bought his Album. Raiders should of been in the Hall of Fame decades ago!
Those toy instruments are funny!!! Paul Revere & The Raiders really knew how to make people laugh!!! Too bad bands today don't have this kind of class. Pretty sad :(
I love how rowdy they are in this video. :) Mark had the drop-sies on this performance. haha He dropped his saxiphone in another performance. I love him.
I am originally from Norridge, Chicago-IL-near suburb-NW SIDE, and remember this song pretty well for being #46 on the charts then at 4 yrs old-this was the beginning of the punk phase in the '60's new mod-(rockers) as they were called-great song, as they were big in and around the Chicago area at that time!!
I remember this appearance on Swingin' Time, which was an after school dance show in Windsor, Ontario. That evening, they played outdoors at the Arborland Shopping Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I think it was in March because there was still snow on the ground.
And to think today's kids think our generation wasn't cool! This definitely proves otherwise. Too bad the cameraman missed Mark so much of the time. Sigh ... He was my first crush.
peetie25 mentioned that his kid was amazed to hear Mark Lindsay doing the "Ya ya uh" thing in the 60s...imagine the look on a kid's face when I told him about the slouching pants...being originated in the 40s by a BLUEGRASS HILLBILLY (the late Stringbean).
The Raiders had an excellent sound. The lip sync video sets were corny but that was the way it was. For notwaiting: The R&R induction committee is Bogus They are biased without standards criteria. Since they did not induct bands like Doobie Bros, Little Feat , Los Lobos, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Raiders, Steve Miller,Deep Purple, etc..it would be an insult to be selected. Sid Vicious actually sent a letter berating them once he was considered..
Great video!! You can see they're taking it oh so seriously!! (Yeah, right...) Love the toy instruments. A brilliant display of punk "don't give a f***" attitude YEARS before punk was fashionable. Funny as hell! Thanks for posting this!
I remember the crush I had on Fang and used to come home "sick" from school just to see him on Where the Action Is! And, to this day, I still listen to that gorgeous voice of Mark Lindsay on his solo albums from back in the day, what a voice!
god i love these guys, and used to watch that show all the time. is mark wearing a danzig LOCK?!?! he must've started it... but anyway, this video makes me happy, and thanks to charlie o'brien of CKWW windsor/detroit for letting me know it was on youtube!!
sadly, they erased the show video tapes as they went and used them again. there are hardly any Swingin' Time shows around. Good save here - where's it from? I know my friend Terry McDonald produced it for a while. Wonder if he took some home???
i saw the Raiders in 1964 with the where the action is road show and was completely blown away. I screamed like a girl and went out and bought a bass so I could be as cool as Fang, got in a band and taped the Abstracts on back of bass and rocked the Berry High School chess club parties-thanks Raiders-I will love you forever
@notwaiting the control of the Hall of Shame is rolling stone magazine owner,he is the small god who says who makes the hall, very unfair and for a period if you were all white and male you were screwed,Raiders and Monkees should have made hall years ago,but likely never will or at least until most members are died like theDC5.
@JJMFB1 That explains a lot. Rolling Stone magazine ain't that great anymore either, but then those who shape the world of music we have available to us aren't on the same page with most of us anymore either.
They seemed to have to do a lot of mad cap stuff for the teens, but as long as they were making money for themselves and the record company along with having fun and writing some very cool songs then why not.......The Monkees made millions off doing the same thing!
himycatsdead, If you're going to compare this band to the Monkees, I suppose I'd have to say PR&R could stand up against any other band back then, Mark Lindsay's vocals were second to none, they could actually play their instruments, they had more of a raw edge and I liked their music better personally, as long as you got past the costumes! Check out both band's version of 'I'm not your stepping stone' and see what I'm talking about.
This is good but you need to check out "She's Mine" on You Tube's " Nuggets from the Liverpool Five ( Part1)". PR and The Raiders borrowed a lot from that English Band who toured extensively in The Pac. NW.Others below have also noted this.

I am from Tacoma, Wash. and I saw the Raiders play with the Liverpool Five prior to them recording this song. Mark has not lost his hair. He has combed his thick bang into a "glib" - in which the front fringe is combed from the sides to come to a point in the center. Although it appears earlier in history, it is "period" for PR&R. When I saw this hair style, I thought, way cool! - here's a smart guy, who takes chances! Great change from his usual heavy bang. Lil John is the noise my kid listens to. a rapper whose "Ya ya uh" is notable among that type of music. My kid was amazed at hearing Lindsay do the same thing 40 years ago.
this brings back lots of great memories, i had all of the vinyl, lost it through the years. They were a great northwest band. proud to be from the northwest, aberdeen to be specific, remember nirvana?

Lil John is the noise my kid listens to. a rapper whose "Ya ya uh" is notable among that type of music. My kid was amazed at hearing Lindsay do the same thing 40 years ago.

Erase your kids Ipod and replace all his tunes with PR&R Yeah Yoh! Rap is a disgrace to music in general! Hell it's not even music!

Snotty vocals and stinging guitar work by Drake Levin. A short Yardbirds style rave-up break. Nice post.

Clip from BIG NIGHT OUT, probably 1965. The Raiders at their mesmirizing best! Tremendous band.
