Incredable... It's as if so many of us were psionically aware that we were within inches of going to full Nuke-Out. I was 13 at the time, and I still can't beleive it! When you read about 1983, and how close we were to the Apocalypse, one wonders if perhaps this song was playing in the backround during the alerts while Stanislav Petrov told his boss at the Kremlin that they were chasing ghosts?[Please see wikipedia for: Stanislav_Petrov to know more.]
Could you imagine sitting at a desk underground in Russia, with a missle key, and your co-worker at the other end of the room, with the same missle key. All you needed was one phone call, and there. You started the end of the world.
Lets rewind the world 2 this period.. ok we had fuck all, no Xbox PS3's little or no money for anything.. but the music was real.. made you feel alive!!
I cant express this enough. We'll never hear the likes of true artists like MAW and Duran Duran and Rush and bands like that. God I hope these bands can continue to vist our towns and do an hour or so of bliss for us. I'll be there, Colin!
@mjstvnsn Unfortunately true, and I live here in the United States of America and i will always back our men and women of the U.S. armed forces, but this has gone on too long and for what purpose does it serve? It seems the govt there doesn't appreciate our soldirs even being there, so, at this point in time u have to say....it's a mistake!! Bring our boys home.....
@JISINSANE The thing is-- "High Quality" music didn't exist in the 80's and it's harder to encode music that's already low quality than it is to encode video that's already low quality.
Anyone know the latest on the Down Under case? Are the band having to pay vast sums of money to the author of that Kukaburra song? What a shame if so.
This is what this song is about: Isaiah 1:2 the same principle as the United Nations.
And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
I would have to agree but also add Midnight Oil as a top Aussie Band. they are both great but from different decades. I was a teen listening to Men at work and sadly, an adult listening to Midnight Oil

yes I said it! it was a DAM BIG MISTAKE! look how things are going so far.only 51 days and the goverment is sooo fucked up! I know all you dum ass people think its cool to say (he's going to fix everything) just wait! last year we still had jobs, banks, GM,a stock market, THANKS A HELL OF A LOT! GREAT JOB SO FAR! cant wait to see what you can do with health care
last year this time, we didn't have such large losses on the stock market. they started towards the end of bush's presidential term. not completely his fault, cuz he warned about the sub-prime possible crisis three years ago but that's off topic. honestly, things are better than they were 60 days ago. the bills that are being passed make sense. fuck gun control, though.
You missed the "B" from dumb and the "N" from damn in your original post..... hasn't the Alabama school system figured out those silent letters yet? They're mighty tricky...
Lots of angst in 1983 about Nuclear war. The made-for-TV movie The Day After came out that same year, dealing with the possibility of nuclear war with the Soviets. Many songs of the era addressed it.
How about we just appreciate this song for what it is...the best we could do at that time....It has touched generations beyond the intended audience and gone on to become an anti war song for wars they had never dreamed would occur....to do anything else is a mistake! pun intended.....
Don't care much for this song's politics (please note I am NOT in favor of nuclear war, which would have to put it mildy, a very bad thing). But on the other hand, nuclear weapons did deter World War Three during the Cold War, and that was a good thing. Having said that much, the catchy tunes to this song and the goofy over-acting makes this video one of my favorites from the 80s. Great song, if I don't agree entirely with its politics!
I met these guys at the Bayou in DC, at what would be the last (I think) show at that place before it was closed for good. They were at a nearby bar. The singer and drummer confessed to me to being compulsive, addicted travelers, as in if they;re not on a plane headed somewhere, they felt lost. I know a lot of Aussies like that.
This song reminds me of how this place turned from fantasy, to reality, to just another home complete with its own set of nightmares....
Its a mistake.....that kids today have NO idea just how close we were to Nuclear War with Russia....I sing this song in pubs to this day, and the younger kids....huh....kids...I was the kid when this was popular....but they don't have a CLUE how this, Russians by Sting, and a few other songs were our "Anti-War" anthems that Marilyn Manson and some of the other "artists" remake as "bubble gum" pop today. Thanks for posting the relaid audio version!!
Spot on, Milw189. If you were a "Cold War" kid you had this sense that it could all be over in a heartbeat. One was taught to hate and fear the Russians, and they were taught to hate and fear us.
These songs were so great (like Nena's 99 Luftballoons) because they spoke to that underlying fear all of us shared to some extent.
its when people add text to the original video. like this video has watermarks from the braodcast station etc, then you added another "your youtube" handle in the upper right hand corner. the trend is to have as little as possible.
Quintessential M.A.W. It's goofy, hilarious, and deadly serious all at the same time. It's also a damned good song.
Yah, some of the video work was choppy, but that was true of most videos of that time. The song reflected very real fears about militarism and nuclear war. One of M.A.W's best in my opinion.
And I don't think the accompanying imagery could've been better. This 38-second segment is for me the crowning glory of an otherwise patchwork video of extremely uneven quality.
A damn good question leonel1982 ...why indeed..perhaps it has something to do with dumming us all down and having lower expectation levels...just look at the creeps today who are running the world...how the hell did that happen?
I don;'t think they were underrated; they were huge in the early 80s, but after Cargo, they ground to a halt. Abiding memory of MAW: received the 'Business as Usual' album on cassette, Xmas '81, spent that whole day listening to it.
I feel all we've done is just buy a few more decades of modern civilization for ourselves. History always repeats itself over long enough periods of time. Good luck to all you youngsters out there.
