  • Not true matter does escape black holes. When a black hole absorbs matter. Intense amounts of heat is released and matter is exejected also.

  • WisdomVendor; It is called a "black hole" because it like jas2754 said, mass and energy falls in, not only this but light can not escape it, therefore it is like a hole, light falls in, mass, energy falls in but can not escape.

  • Singularity is merely a mathematical concept it is not a real thing and the idea of infinite mass is preposterous the whole universe has a definite mass so how could anything within it have more mass than the universe. It makes no sense

  • We can't really study black holes because light can't even escape the gravity of a black hole. Therefore we can not see them. We only have some evidence that they are there because of the magnetic fields and random disappearance of things in space. Correct me if I'm wrong.

  • there are three things we know about black holes by measuring the affects it has on other matter these things are: mass, charge, and angular momentum.

    <3 ^_^

  • Everybody complains about Black Holes but nobody does anything about them!

  • lol... I love your comment....what exactly do you expect us to do about them? your so funny!!!

  • what can they do?

here is a point of infinite gravitational mass, once in the future of an object is trapped forever literally, no matter how fast the object goes it is trapped so you cannot expect to blow a black hole up with a missile or shoot it with a gun

  • thanks for my correction, and yea i can see now that you are joking

  • Black holes is a conspiracy created by the US Govt. to distract people! Actually the universe is made of green cheese!!

  • i no reit?

  • Is that a bong in the background?

  • lol it looks like it.

    Kind of makes sense lol.

  • what will happen if you detonate a very powerful termo-nuclear bomb inside a back hole? Will it 'disperse' after?

  • if you blow a bomb in a black hole absolutely nothing will happen,

the object is already supercompressed (futureless) nothing once it is fully inside, an interesting thing though would be to ram a black hole with an object bigger than the black hole itslef

  • Thank you, FEP, I knew that.

    My comment was not serious.

Just as minor correction, though, remember it's not the mass that's infinite, they have a definite and finite mass; it's the density that's infinite at the point of singularity, at least as far as can be described by our current understanding.

  • so if the density is infinite, then the volume must be zero??? because density = mass / volume.

  • Yes, the volume is zero. At the point of singularity, all diffeomorphism invariant quantities become infinite and the size = 0 in all spatial dimensions, with infinite density, infinite temperature, and infinite space-time curvature.

  • mass isn't a basic unit. Define it and you will find your answer.

  • loool. woord. it would be a fuckin galactical nuclear bomb.

  • All mass and energy warps space time including gravitational waves. So even the gravitational field gravitates on itself. This is the reason that general relativity is non-linear. This is also the cause of the advance of the perihelion of Mercury. The sun's gravitational field has a pit that alters the path of Mercury due to the increased gravity of the self gravitation field.

  • LOL grammar

  • Hi I just want to ask you something. Have you heard about the LHC creating small black holes?

What im wondering is: How much does human know about black holes, will we be prepared for the result? This "Hawkings-radiation", is it proven to exist?

What do you think the LHC will do and produce at the collision in October?

  • It is only theoretical and has not been observed, for any black hole other than a micro-black hole it would be swamped by the cosmic microwave background. Not that I am saying it is not true, it is like gravitational waves if not true it is back to the drawing board for modern physics! It is easier to observe gw when LISA is launched 2015. The LHC will not create black holes, it does not have the energy unless some speculative theories involving extra dimensions are true. LHC is to find higgs.

  • Do you belive Higgs particle exists? Do you think they will see it? What is the Higgs particle?

  • The Higgs field a its its quantum the higgs boson. Are thought to provide wow particles acquire mass. It is thought that if the LHC does not observe them then they don't exist.

  • and even if it did create a black hole it would evaporate in a billionth of a second and would not touch any surfaces in that time.

  • And that is because of the Hawkins Radiation that has not yet been proven, right?

  • There is no danger of the LHC producing a dangerous black hole. Scientists wouldn't play with the LHC if it could create something like that. Particle collisions much larger then ones taking place in the LHC happen every day in our atmosphere, and no black holes result. It's just hysteria.

  • You have a great way of explaining things around the theory in a very non-technical way. Interesting video.

  • You said at 04:05, that "gravity is warped near a high mass", and that a gravitational field warps space-time. Thats not true, as it is mass which warps space-time giving the effect of a gravitational field, sorry to be picky, but i couldnt ignore it! Nice vid though.

  • Thanks for the clarification.... you are correct.

  • Dr.John, this has to be one of the most interesting discussions threads on YouTube. Can you please briefly share your understanding of the Warm Hole? (potential tunnels where one could travel at or beyond speed of light)

  • i think you mean worm hole

  • A wormhole. Theoretics say, that in the bottom and middle of a Black hole, there is a singularity. A Singularity is a point where space-time is warped at its maximum. Matter goes against 0, and densitiy goes against infinity.

Now there is a theory which says that rotating black holes, have a singularity in the form a of a ring. Now when you think about space-time like a piece of paper, which you can fold, it may be possible that on both, parallel sides of space-time there are black holes.

  • which have connected singularities in the form of a ring. Now space-time moves obviously, or else it wouldnt be "space-time". So there is a theorie that going through such a worm-hole, which is nothing but two black holes in different positions of space-time which have connected singularities, can make it possible to travel back in time.

Look up Wormholes on wikipedia. It's an interesting subject.

This was all direceted at the user shanks424. I don't know why it didn't reply to his comment :S

  • Hi ThiaryBand, thanks for taking the time to reply. It sure is a complex topic for the untrained. Yes, I will also check Wikipedia. Thanks.

  • Dr.John, thanks very much for sharing your knowledge on this topic..in a easy for common people like me.

  • I still don't understand why it is called a "hole" which to me implies it is a 2-dimensional region. When in reality, it would have to be a "black sphere" since the gravitational "waves" created by a singularity must be radiated in all directions from the singularity in 3 physical dimensions.

  • Your point is well taken... the naming is not really scientific.... it comes from the notion that mass and energy can fall in but can never get out.

  • Have you seen "black hole the video"? I'ts a video feedback piece on google video that is quite amazing.

It's a black hole in real time. Very intense.

  • Thank you for your response. Time stopping is another paradoxical outcome. If time has stopped for a known object falling in. Then in truth its not falling. Simply amazing. The more you find out the more you scratch your head. The more you want to know.

  • To the Outside observer...the falling object is no longer changing, and because of the red shift.... it is disappearing as well...at the moment it is at the event horizon... time stops and energy representing it cannot escape.

There are wonderful paradoxical objects. that push all sort of limits.. read Stephen Hawkings...he is the expert on BHs! ;-) Dr John (who is originally from the Bronx)

  • Thats pretty funny. My name is john as well!! thanks for your time.

  • continued:

As for reaching the center... you would eventually be torn into pieces and even your atoms in your body would be broken into elementary particles as what is left of you approaches the center...but no one really knows for sure.

  • Also time is dilating as you approach. Less at first then greater as you get closer. How does the human mind let alone our instrumentation rationalize this, other than a light blur. Is anything destroyed if time stops? Do you ever reach the center?

  • If you are approaching a black hole, your perception of time is not changing. However an observer not effected by the black hole watching you would see your time slow down, and you would also be redshifted, eventually into oblivion, while you would just think all is normal as far as time goes...it is paradoxical for sure.

  • Dr. When factoring in time dilation on approach to the ecretion disk or event horizon. Wouldn't that warp the persons perspective of watching someone falling into the "hole"? The superheated gasses we see spiraling to what we assume is there doom. Isnt this really a jumble of perspective? I don't think our minds and our technology compensate for not only the rotational speed but for the slowing of time by these supermassive structures

  • Yes.. as you watched someone falling into a black hole... time would be slowed down and they would turn redder... unless you were traveling with them, in which case your perception of time would be unaltered from you normal( whatever that means) perception of time.

  • where do you teach?

  • Hi thanks for asking...I keep anonymous but I have taught at a number of US Universities over the years, although most of my time is spent in industry...when I retire I hope to teach physics full time.

  • I wonder if there are any medium size black holes.

  • The minimum balck hole from stellar remnants is about 5 Solar masses, and has an event horizon radius of about 15 Km.

In the early formation of the universe there may have been smaller black holes formed, but by now they have evaporated.

  • thanks for posting. i have a question what is going to happen to our star? i heard it has 5 billion more years of life left. will it become a black hole??

  • Hello , Im about that time frame the Sun will become a Red giant, this is when the core runs out of Hyrdrogen, Eventually it will end us as a white dwarf star rather than a Black Hole. For a star to become a black hole it's mass needs to be substantially greater than the Sun's, about 8 solar masses.

  • EXCELLENT!

  • you should post a video on your thoughts about the human mind and consciensness

  • Thank You....I may do something on the possibilities for the human race... near term lots of interesting possibilities, mostly good... but long term( 100 to a few hundred years) things may get beyond our control.

  • I dont know anything on quantum physics, but I have always been facinated with black holes. I found out that albert eienstien tried to say that theary was false. sorry about my spelling, I love science, but my math and spelling really sucks.

  • Thank you for posting these, look forward to more

    Space & Physics :-)

  • I believe the inside of a black hole is more like a pocket and possibly what goes in is slowly let out as new particals.

Possibly, the inside is the oposite of the outside and very, very bright.

To bad we'll never know for sure...

  • I agree that the inside is "bright" - it is full of mass and energy. Regarding particles leaking out... that is called Hawkings Radiation...a slow process.

  • i don't much about quantum physics but I've been interested in it along with black holes since i was little.

  • And people still think there is a god

  • Indeed..and I think the belief will remain for many many generations to come.... God is a great social control tool.

  • BINGO! "god" also seems to be a convenient explanation for things that we don't understand, making people feel more comfortable.

  • you know at the dawn of civilization god was blamed for everything and now that scientists are proving god wrong with scientifec explanations "god" is a simple way of saying "you cant prove it so its impossible and god did it"

  • thanks great as always.

  • Thank You.... I'll try to keep them coming. Preparing them is always a good review!

  • This is really brilliant! Even a n00b like me can understand it. Keep it up!

  • Thanks ..I try to keep it simple and understandable. I am a Believer that most "complicated" ideas can be distilled into simple concepts. Of course there are some pieces of physics that go beyond all human minds..such as the duality between particles and waves...we can do the math but thats about it

  • This just further emphasizes the incredible breadth and wonder of our universe. I really appreciate you posting this, thank you!

  • You are welcome.... I always thought this stuff is more amazing than any science fiction humans can cook up.
