USED TO LISTEN TO THEM ON TOTP,ON A THURSDAY,AFTER SHOPPIN WE ME MA N DA,AH WAS ONLY SEVEN,BUT HE WAS BLOODY BRILL......PREFERED HIT ME WITH YOUR RHYTHM STICK THO.....R.I.P Ian.
I'm just in from the Blockheads live in London, my ears are still ringing. All these years later they still sound waaaay better than all those pussy over-promoted bands that sell out the big venues.
@RobW581 The Blockheads sound as good as ever. Ian can never be replaced but Derek Hussey, a close friend of Ian (search his name) is on lead vocals, sort of lets the band keep a family feeling, bringing in an outsider might not have worked. Check their website & on Facebook, they sometimes go north of Watford.
If you were English and around in '78 how could you not like this? The man knew about fish'n'chip rock'n'roll' And how about the bass player............?
I remember seeing this very performance at my friend Sharon's house. We were supposed to be doing our homework, but everything stopped for totp in those days, it was a real event in the days before 'yoof tv'. Those were exciting days indeed, Im glad I was part of them.
@bananasplitsable Phil Jupitus????? I cant stand that usless twat, I mean, what does he do?? What is he suposed to be?? Did you pelt the fat goats beard wearin bastard with shit?? I know I would've done, How dare he try to even think about replacin Ian Dury the absolute CUNT!
@MOONST0MP Well Ian was dead by then. I think Phil Jupitus is a fan and wanted to perform some kind of tribute. I was on my best behaviour because I'm a lady!
@bananasplitsable Ok, sorry, i didnt mean anythin by it, i just dont get that Phil Jupitus, I have seen him on 'never mind the buzzcocks' and i get fed up of him talkin over people and tryin to be the centre of atention all the time, i watched him the other day and Andy Serkis was on his team, David williams asked Andy a question and Phil Jupitus butted in and didnt give Andy a chance to speak, I hate that! sorry. i am an easy goin bloke but things like that piss me off.
@MOONST0MP To be honest I've never watched Phil Jupitus, but people like him that love the sound of their own voice! You don't have to apologise, you have a right to your opinion. I always felt the same about Ruby Wax!
I think Ian was one of those acts back then, that as soon as you heard them you just knew they were giants, legends-to-be outclassing all the weedy crap music endlessly displayed on top of the pops.
there ain't half been some clever bastards
now that we've had some of his class of talent (R.I.P), lets hope that there's lots more to come
I look at this clip now over 30 years since i first saw or heard Ian Dury & its still as fresh now.Now with hindsight,i appreciate how amazing he was,not just how he sounded, but also how he looked. His 'punk' style to me has always been the true & only one, forget about the dyed spiky hair & bondage gear! All the real punks in the early days had cropped hair & baggy 50s suits. His'real' lyrics, sung in an english cockney accent were more shocking at the time than any other punk group i can remember.
As a young gutter snipe, Ians rough voice and rather unusual lyrics made me a tad nervous. I felt like a country person lost in the Paris Metro on a visit to the city for the first time. Now I dare to listen to him once again but this time by choice. I'll keep you informed
