I love this movie, and this song is the most touching for me. It reminds me of my grandfather who died when i was 4. I lived with my grandparents since my mom and dad gave me away.
brings tears to my eyes each time I listen. My dad introduced me to broadway and I have done the same to my two sons. I don't get how everyone wants Christine to be with Erik, I mean, I get it, he's misunderstood, he's lonely... But all of these lonely years and his awful childhood have made him insane. No sane person would ever commit all of the things he did. Christine tried to kill herself, just to get away from him, that's how much he terrified her! I don't think that anyone in their right mind would even consider bieng with a man like that... Read the book and then make up your mind ;)
@ScherazadezGypsy Haha, Yeah I know, but I can't believe people are falling for it x) It's kind of fun that you brought up the Stockholm Syndrome, since I'm a Swede ;)
@ScherazadezGypsy You didn't offend me! I thought it was really fun ^^ Just think that it's fun to know that people outside Sweden knows of the syndrome ;)
Please do not rant back at me about how some of the things I mentioned are not in the movie, or, at least, are not explained in it. My spiel is based on the 1910 novel by Gaston Leroux.
Christine tried to show him compassion, in the novel, by not cringing at his deformity, but saw the hurt underneath the skin, the soul that could not be repaired. He states that he is beyond redemption, but believes that if he can gain the love of one as beautiful and pure as Christine, she would redeam him. In the end he redeams himself, by allowing Christine to break her promise to stay with him, made in order to keep him taking more lives, namely, Raoul's.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutly love Erik, but I see, as he adventually does, how much Christine truly loves Raoul. It was never truly a matter, for her, of choosing one over the other, for, as hard as Erik may have tried, he could not control Christine's heart. He could not force her to love him as she did Raoul. His deformity, as Christine states in the novel, "is in his soul, not on his face." As he said, "all I ever wanted was to be loved for myslef."
I love how people are pissed off that she picks Raoul, even though she has loved him since they were children. She is seperated from him when her father dies and she goes to find work in the Paris Opera House, and they see each other for the first time after that the night she first takes Carlotta's place (which is caused by Erik writing a letter to the opera managers and then a threatening one to Carlotta, not by her singing for the opera managers). Their young love is so pure and beautiful.
@Welomia626: cont.: Because of this, she goes into the crypt, believing that either her father had returned to play for her one last time, or that he had taught the Angel of Music the song. It makes more sense in the book. Also, Raoul is watching Christine at this point in the book, because he has followed her to the graveyard, but he only observes, he does not interfer with her lesson with Erik.
*Sigh* This is why people would do well to actually read books.
@Welomia626: At that point in the story, she had yet to see the phantom as a pysical being, she only heard his voice. She believed him to be the Angel of Music, sent to her by her father. In the original story, at this point, Erik (the phantom) plays a song on the violin, like her father used to, asking her to sing the song.
I love this song, i completely understand the phantom.. He's in love but christine will never love his face, she has to learn to love the man behind the mask. If she had just seen that, she would have loved the phantom.. It just needed time but the phantom had no time because Raoul came in the picture.. i wish Raoul had never come and the phantom would have his love and his Muse for the Music of the Night!
@jolijnm96 Christine wasn't shallow. She was infatuated with the Phantom because of his music, but ultimately chose Raoul because she knew that she was just enchanted by his music and when that wore off, she would be in a relationship in which she could never be safe. The Phantom is in her head, but Raoul is in her heart. This can be seen more clearly in the book, in which Christine begs Raoul to take her away from Erik, no matter how much she begs.
I just don't get WHY Christine thought that the phantom was her father... I mean, if MY dad said that he whould send me the Angel of Music and I have recived The Phantom, I whouldn't belive he was my father... I mean, WHY have him as a father when you can have him as a lover!
if you were visiting your fathers grave and someone randomly started singing inside of it would you really just sing along and walk up to it i mean what if it was some pedo...
they should of kept the scenefrom the musical when phantom throws fireballs at Raoul that would of made it more entertainingi think than the swordfight
This song always sends me into a blubbering fit. It always reminds me of my mother and her father. He died when I was quite young, and she loves this musical, very tear-jerking and haunting
Too many years Fighting back tears Why can't the past just die! Wishing you were here again Knowing we must say goodbye Try to forgive Teach me to live Give me the strength to try! No more memories No more silent tears No more gazing across the wasted years Help me say goodbye Help me say goodbye! Amen to that. These lyrics are so touching and I can relate so much to them. I love this musical and this song is my favourite.
It makes me sick to NO END the way she picks Raoul. ugh!! The Best scenes in the Movie are the ones with Christine and Erik. Then the mood drastically changes to 'Damn it!!!' when Raoul enters. Fail. Best movie ever, nonetheless. Would be perfect if she didn't pick Raoul, but whatever
If you were to ask me for the one song that described my childhood, this would be it. I honestly do not care what's wrong with 49 people, I care what is right with the 2,388 who truly understand.
This is my favorite scene in the entire thing. I always get annoyed when Raoul jumps in, but the intensity between Christine and the Phantom in this part makes up for his idiocy. :)
We actually watched this scene in my theatre class yesterday, and I started crying.
As morbid as it may sound, I really want to sing this song at my father's funeral when he dies. I just can't see any other song representing the love I have for him other than this. I don't know what I'll do when he dies.
@OnlyTeish: Um...the moment? He was trying to take advantage of her being lonely and confused to convince her he was her dead father and get her back to doing whatever he wanted her too. I fail to see how this is a romantic moment that should not be interrupted. Surely you realize that the point of this song is that she's going to say goodbye to her father for the last time because she thinks he sent the Phantom? She's hoping that by letting her father go, the "angel" he sent will go away too.
@HanaOfBrockdonia Of course. I understand completely! Perhaps I should have clarified... I was attempting (I admit, quite poorly-well, really poorly) that *my* moment was ruined. I was just so utterly enveloped in the scene,-regardless of what I knew was coming- that I was disappointed when such a lovely, haunting and bittersweet number ended. That was all. I can see how you ended up with that opinion and that was my bad!
@OnlyTeish : *blush* Right. Sorry. My bad. I shouldn't have snapped--especially since EVERYONE, myself included, gets completely swept up in that harmony, and Raul DOES shatter the moment. Myself, however, I always found that jarring in the sense of "Oh my god, I was falling for it just like she was and I KNOW better!" Freaks me the hell out. *holds out hand* No hard feelings?
Part of why we like Erik so darn much is exactly BECAUSE he is overlooked and neglected. It would not be the same if they ended up together- it would be an exhaustive hollywood - I guess in this case Broadway- cliche. I LOVE Gerard Butler- and this film really is fantastic but it feels VERY different from the book. I am glad that the angry mob didn't push Erik off a bridge... anyone seen the silent film? Now THAT'S an Erik I'll never forget!
Erik wasn't meant to be the anti-hero. He was supposed to just be a gross old creeper stalking the young woman. The dynamic Andrew Lloyd W. put on it definitely changed it. kind of like how Ann Rice changed the face of vamps- into sexy slightly-dangerous, tortured souls-like Erik hmm... cultural trend? This fits nicely within our social standards but definitely not in Leroux's society. I do want them to be together but I am very glad that they are not- it would be too far from the novel.
For anyone who is interested, I'm writing a story called As It Should Be. It's basically giving Erik the happy ending he deserves, with the use of my own character.
@Ryuzaki1022 That's awesome...Of course I have no idea what direction you are taking it in- Good luck! But I think Beauty & the Beast is basically the same story- [even in the same country!] only in the end, Belle is not as stubborn and immature & of course chooses her captor- the "Beast"- who is more or less Erik - over the other shallow man trying to woo her.
I'm not a huge fan of the singing in this movie (save for Patrick Wilson), but the cinematography in this movie, especially in this scene, is absolutely breathtaking. So lush, yet foreboding.
WOW. I can't believe how much I love their duet at 5:24! It has such a punch, it's impossible not to get swept up in the music! It's one of my favorite parts in the movie. <3
y r so many people hating on raul? i mean, he's only trying 2 do what he thinks is right-protectin christine in anyway he can. he's willing 2 die 2 save her. wouldn't u do that 4 the person u loved more than anything?
@Demonie0603 there is a shirt that says Team Phantom, i remeber seeing it somewhere when I was looking at pictures of him or when i was looking up Funny Phantom of the opea song
i did'nt like the fact that that rauol and christine ended up 2gether yes rauol was a better match 4 christine but the phantom and christine had way more chemistry here's hoping that in love never dies they get 2gether
I don't understand people who oppose a film and a stage. Come on, people. It's all - "The Phantom of the Opera"! How many people, are so much and opinions. Who likes a stage - it's OK enjoy it, but don't say haughty that the movie is a nonsense. This film - work of many and many people which also is reputable and also has admirers.
@wingsmanx5 BIG TIME, YEAH!!! Heck to what the "orignal says." They were born to end up together!! Every blasting cover is of THEM. Not sissy pants and Christine.
@wingsmanx5 If I were the director of the movie, I would have cast Hugh Jackman as the Phantom and would've let Emmy Rossum properly act, rather than just being a pretty face and a pair of tits.
@ZodiacBryan Hmmm....I can see that, except she was 17 and he was in his thirties...illegal. Not that that never happens. But for imaginations sake...it happened. :D haha!
@wingsmanx5 OMG!!! I FOUND THE MOST PERFECT VID FOR YOU!!!! LOOK UP:
'Listen to your heart - Phantom of the Opera'
YOU WILL EFFING DIE AT THE END!!!!! TRUST ME!! THIS VID WILL NOT FAIL!!! ANYONE ELSE READING THIS COMMENT, LOOK UP THE VID TOO!!!! YOU WILL THANK ME LIKE NEVER BEFORE!!!!
@thatsecretlyshygirl She's older now so Phantom and Christine should have a new movie showing how much they love each other and I want to see Phantom kicking Raoul's ass, most of ppl hate Raoul.
@MattsWorld95 I didn't know she was 16 lol, hey I'm not dumb, I would ask my lawyer first, if necessary I would change the actress, she isn't the only beautiful girl in the world.
@wingsmanx5 nope, he's the one she loved since her childhood, and who loved her. :) But if you mean Patrick Wilson, I agree, he's not as hot as Gerarg Butler. :)
@cilalany Please don't believe in those baby love, I have so many female friends that I've known them since I was a baby but I'd never fallen in love with one of them. We don't fall in love with our brother or sister right?
@wingsmanx5 :D Not baby-love, but the first love, the first kiss, etc. :) They're not like brother and sister, and I think, they never were only friends. And even if they were... I have seen many boy-girl friendships turn into love.
@cilalany Wow, you still are in love with the lover you have first love first kiss? Good luck of that! See most of people marry the lovers are not their first love and first kiss, you can ask everyone around you, most of people would tell you their first one is not their last one, believe me.
@cilalany From this movie I watch, the love between Christine and Raoul is so weak, but there is very strong chemistry between Christine and the Phantom, I don't understand why Christine has to abandon Phantom for Raoul? I don't feel she has a warm heart.
@wingsmanx5 As I see it, it's like this: Raoul and Christine have something less physical, less passionate, but deeper and warmer. For Christine this love means safety and a family.
With the Phantom, true, there is more chemistry but she's also afraid of him. And for her the Phantom is more like a father and a teacher than a possible lover. She's never thought of him like that, I think, until the end of the story, where she says no
And she loves Raoul so much that she's ready to make sacrifices.
@cilalany That's exactly what happen, this girl falls in love with her teacher, everyone can see from the eyes they look at each other, from the song they sing, that's why we pay money to walk in theatre to watch this movie, because we all feel the real love between them. Why do you say the love between Raoul and Christine have something less physical and less passionate but deeper and warmer? That doesn't make any sense. I don't think she's that innocent not to fall in love with the Phantom.
@wingsmanx5 But she chooses Raoul willingly, because she loves him more. :) She's free to choose. If she'd loved the Phantom truly, she'd chosen him. But she doesn't love him as much as she's afraid of him... That's why we watch this movie. We love to see the heartbroken Phantom, and we want to be in Christine's place to choose him. We can see what C. can't, the good side of him. But that is hidden from her.
And yes, she's innocent. At least, in this story. :)
now, whenever I hear this song, I think of my friend whose dad died. he died a few weeks ago from cancer.. I only met the guy twice and I always thought I would see him again.. she's really sad over it, I just hope she'll be okay.. =[ </3 RIP
I know that everyone says that christine should have gone with the phantom but I think it gives the phantom a chance to realize how he does'nt have to kill all the time and he can just miss her and that it is okay to show compassion even though the world showed no compassion to him. Plus everyone was happy at the end and the phantom could love. <3
Why can't you guys just shut up about the plot of the story- about how Christine should have gone with Erik and not Raoul. Leave Gaston Leroux, Andrew Webber and Christine (and Raoul, and Erik) ALONE!!!
Check out me doing "Music of the night" at this years Britain does variety regional finals in kettering, Northamptonshire. Hope I did it justice! Please comment me so I know what I did good and what I can improve on, thanks! :)
@BarrelRacingAngle You do realize that the Phantom is a homocidal maniac, right? And you do know, that turns most girls off. Raoul risks his life for Christine, while the Phantom only endangers other peoples lives for her.
@MsCompletelyPointles Yes I do I'm a compleatly Phantom crazed Phangirl though and if you think about it look at how he was treated sold to a gypsie came and locked away under the opera house I dont blame him humanity was cruel to him
@MsCompletelyPointles Sorry, but you have little to no depth to your thoughts at all. You are speaking of a person that has been completely removed from society and has been able to communicate with no one. Finally he has not only a connection to the outside world, but a chance to be human. Everyone is taking that away from him, including Christine herself.
When I read 'After Juliet' I wanted Rosaline to go to Romeo's grave and sing this to him. but obviously changing the word 'Father' to somethig like 'lover' :D <3
I feel your pain. I'm the same way. But, it's not our faults. It's the movie. It's just too awesome. There really should be a warning label next to the title, so people can be aware of how addictive it can be.
I have seen the stage version of it. I saw it in Las Vegas at the Venitian. It was awesome. But, I guess I'm weird. I don't really like stage versions of a production. I find the acting in them to be overrated and exaggerated. I like the movie versions better, some may find them crass, but I like them.
@mrsdeshiro Have you seen an actual B-way or B-way Touring? Not the condensed down version that palys at the Venitian? If not please, for me! If you can see it again and give it a chance! The Actual version that travels on/with B-way is amazing! Give it another chance haha
I have not, although I do wish to see it someday. However, I've always liked the movie versions of a production better than a play. I the subtlity that can be used in a movie. In a play they always have to over dramatize things so the people in the back can follow along, and I find that kind of annoying.
I feel bad for the Phantom, all his life, as he said in a song later "but no one show(ed/s) compassion for me" yet she ignores him and still goes with that ugly ... raoul.
You know The Phantom of the Opera kind of reminds of of the movie The Labyrinth. Sarah is too young to really understand what he's offering and the ending kind of pisses me off. Sorta like the end of Peter Pan I always thought they should have stayed in Neverland. *Sighs*What can ya do?
So I must ask. Not out of trolling, but just out of curiousty. Did any of you see the past phantom of the opera's? Yes Erik in this one has a damn sexy look and an amazing voice, but its like none of you are seeing the mad man. I would have to say that Robert Enguland was the best phantom in my case. So with that being said, Let the debate begin. Who do you think is the best phantom? why?
@DarkAngel123543 You should check out Peter Karrie's performance, if you haven't already :) He plays a wonderfully mad Phantom, in my opinion at least. Very much like he is in the original Gaston Leroux novel. In terms of the "best", I'd have to say Michael Crawford. He's the perfect blend of man and monster in my opinion. I like Gerard a lot, nevertheless. His voice has a certain charm to it, and his emotion moved me. But, in my opinion, MC is just breathtaking to watch/listen to :)
It' s snowing
The monuments are standing

It would not be the same if they ended up together- it would be an exhaustive hollywood - I guess in this case Broadway- cliche. I LOVE Gerard Butler- and this film really is fantastic but it feels VERY different from the book. I am glad that the angry mob didn't push Erik off a bridge... anyone seen the silent film? Now THAT'S an Erik I'll never forget!
catherinesteph 3 months ago

Ryuzaki1022 3 months ago 2
@Ryuzaki1022 That's awesome...Of course I have no idea what direction you are taking it in- Good luck! But I think Beauty & the Beast is basically the same story- [even in the same country!] only in the end, Belle is not as stubborn and immature & of course chooses her captor- the "Beast"- who is more or less Erik - over the other shallow man trying to woo her.

We don't fall in love with our brother or sister right?
wingsmanx5 1 month ago
@wingsmanx5 :D Not baby-love, but the first love, the first kiss, etc. :) They're not like brother and sister, and I think, they never were only friends. And even if they were... I have seen many boy-girl friendships turn into love.
cilalany 1 month ago
@cilalany Wow, you still are in love with the lover you have first love first kiss? Good luck of that! See most of people marry the lovers are not their first love and first kiss, you can ask everyone around you, most of people would tell you their first one is not their last one, believe me.
wingsmanx5 1 month ago
@cilalany From this movie I watch, the love between Christine and Raoul is so weak, but there is very strong chemistry between Christine and the Phantom, I don't understand why Christine has to abandon Phantom for Raoul? I don't feel she has a warm heart.
wingsmanx5 1 month ago
@wingsmanx5 As I see it, it's like this: Raoul and Christine have something less physical, less passionate, but deeper and warmer. For Christine this love means safety and a family.
With the Phantom, true, there is more chemistry but she's also afraid of him. And for her the Phantom is more like a father and a teacher than a possible lover. She's never thought of him like that, I think, until the end of the story, where she says no
And she loves Raoul so much that she's ready to make sacrifices.
cilalany 1 month ago

wingsmanx5 1 month ago
@cilalany That's exactly what happen, this girl falls in love with her teacher, everyone can see from the eyes they look at each other, from the song they sing, that's why we pay money to walk in theatre to watch this movie, because we all feel the real love between them. Why do you say the love between Raoul and Christine have something less physical and less passionate but deeper and warmer? That doesn't make any sense. I don't think she's that innocent not to fall in love with the Phantom.
wingsmanx5 1 month ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@wingsmanx5 But she chooses Raoul willingly, because she loves him more.
Anyways, that's my version.
cilalany 1 month ago

I know that everyone says that christine should have gone with the phantom but I think it gives the phantom a chance to realize how he does'nt have to kill all the time and he can just miss her and that it is okay to show compassion even though the world showed no compassion to him. Plus everyone was happy at the end and the phantom could love. <3

@BarrelRacingAngle You do realize that the Phantom is a homocidal maniac, right? And you do know, that turns most girls off. Raoul risks his life for Christine, while the Phantom only endangers other peoples lives for her.

BarrelRacingAngle 6 months ago
@MsCompletelyPointles Sorry, but you have little to no depth to your thoughts at all. You are speaking of a person that has been completely removed from society and has been able to communicate with no one. Finally he has not only a connection to the outside world, but a chance to be human. Everyone is taking that away from him, including Christine herself.
I'd kill for a lot less, and so would you.

@mrsdeshiro Have you my dear seen the stage version then?
Under79in9 6 months ago
@Under79in9
I have seen the stage version of it. I saw it in Las Vegas at the Venitian. It was awesome. But, I guess I'm weird. I don't really like stage versions of a production. I find the acting in them to be overrated and exaggerated. I like the movie versions better, some may find them crass, but I like them.
mrsdeshiro 6 months ago 2
@mrsdeshiro Have you seen an actual B-way or B-way Touring? Not the condensed down version that palys at the Venitian? If not please, for me! If you can see it again and give it a chance! The Actual version that travels on/with B-way is amazing! Give it another chance haha
Under79in9 5 months ago
@Under79in9
I have not, although I do wish to see it someday. However, I've always liked the movie versions of a production better than a play. I the subtlity that can be used in a movie. In a play they always have to over dramatize things so the people in the back can follow along, and I find that kind of annoying.

BetsyinTheSunshine 6 months ago 2
So I must ask. Not out of trolling, but just out of curiousty. Did any of you see the past phantom of the opera's? Yes Erik in this one has a damn sexy look and an amazing voice, but its like none of you are seeing the mad man. I would have to say that Robert Enguland was the best phantom in my case. So with that being said, Let the debate begin. Who do you think is the best phantom? why?
DarkAngel123543 6 months ago
@DarkAngel123543 You should check out Peter Karrie's performance, if you haven't already :) He plays a wonderfully mad Phantom, in my opinion at least. Very much like he is in the original Gaston Leroux novel. In terms of the "best", I'd have to say Michael Crawford. He's the perfect blend of man and monster in my opinion. I like Gerard a lot, nevertheless. His voice has a certain charm to it, and his emotion moved me. But, in my opinion, MC is just breathtaking to watch/listen to :)
