I think the horns are quite subtle and tasteful on this song. If you listen closely, they're just playing fleshed-out arrangements of lines that were already present in the keyboards in the original anyway.
@musicpower84 Where can I send some audition tapes so you can critique them since you seem to be a great critic-NOT First of all this is a rehearsal taken from RAW(Real Artists Working)and Chicago just happened to be one of a few groups that participated in this.I have this on VHS and DVD and this particular copy just doesnt give it justice but to sit here and bash Jason and Tris says alot about your lack of musical ear.Jason has been with the group longer than Peter so except it already
Jason fit this band well -That is why we still talk of him 24 years later: To reunite with Cetera would be a slap in Scheff's face! The sound here is dead as many rehearsals tend to be - Enjoy Jason _ He was damn good for the band and for their continuing legacy-We all know it - Why do we have to speak of ghosts? Cetera was often not that good live-and I liked Pete!
LOVE Robert, Lee, Jimmy, and Walt... Too bad Danny and Peter aren't still there.. They ARE missed by Chicago's older fans... The ones who ENJOYED reading the liner notes on the sleeves of the lp's!!
This was a rehearsal before the tour in 2000. They rehearsed in a studio in Hawaii . The band had been off for a while as you can tell by the performance. I'm assumimg they recorded this to show the difference between an unrehearsed Chicago and the finished product that went on the road.
This performance sadly depicts the waning vocal quality of both Jason and Bill. Jason can't hit the high notes any longer, nor can he hold the midrange for more than a few seconds. As for Champlin, his voice is so far gone that a man with a gunshot wound to the head and shrapnel vocally lodged would sound much better.
Bill sounds good in the first verse. It's hard for older men to sing high, and I don't know why they don't hire someone to come in and sing, even a female singer - could put a nice new turn on the corpus of their work.
I TOTALLY agree!! Jason will NEVER even tap into Peter Cetera's vocal range and Bill Champlin...GLAD HE'S FINALLY GONE!! YAY!! Boz Scaggs or Michael McDonald would've been okay to sub for Terry... NOBODY... I mean NOBODY ... will E-V-E-R "replace" Terry Kath.. THAT goes without saying!!
I think this song was written by composer Tom Keane. Jason Scheff used to sing with Tom and his brother John in the 80's band KEANE. (not the British group of today).
I'm amazed by the fact that a bunch of loser kids can hit on a 40-50 professional singer... Does nopast68 know about music at all??? Is any of you aware of the awful mix that we get to listen to (voice-in-your-face, no effects at all (reverb, etc.))? I would give a lot to see you and hear you perform on stage... Professional bass player AND singer speaking.
P.S. Peter Cetera never sang and will never sing this song ever although he's an awesome singer. Period.
Besides the fact that if you listen to Cetera now, he's not vocally able to sing this song. I love Peter and he's a great performer, but he just can't hit those notes like he used to.
What are you talking about?? Peter Cetera never sung this song! It was written and produced for Jason to perform in 1987. I hate people who don't know anything about Chicago spilling their two cents.
I KNOW that this was sung/recorded by Jason Scheff. I only meant that I love Peter's singing more than Jason's ergo it would be great if Peter would do this song (at least for me). Got that, Mr. Know-it-all?????
this 80s songs wouldn't have been so awful if there had been some trace of horns, which is what made chicago different from every other band. Nice to see they added it during live concerts
I can see your desire to include the horns in all the songs because that is the purpose behind Chicago, right? But I dont think this song was awful at all. I think this song was just awesome the way it was. It was selfish of David Foster to make the horn section so scarce during his productions but this song awful? I dont think so.....
Is it me or is Jason's mic usually turned lower than Bill's? He always drowns Jason out, especially when they harmonize. I know Jason has a more important role as far as vocals go. It's terrible sometimes because I know he pounds the hell out of his vocal chords to hit those notes he used to hit and Cetera too. I have respect for Bill but I never cared much for him. No offense to you Champlin lovers.
Cetera never sang Will You Still Love Me, This is Scheff's premiere song off the Chicago 18 album. It doesn't sound as good Live, but what song ever does? I thought he was an awesome replacement. There is only one Cetera, but give Scheff some credit, he ain't that bad..
Vid was made during summer of 2000 or 2001 in California. It was created as a "backstage" look into Chicago and their rehearsal preparations for a live
show. This is (or was) available as a DVD and is called Chicago R.A.W. (Real Artists Working). Each member of the band is interviewed and gives comments about their instrument and how they got started as musicians. It is a unique perspective of the band.
i don't get it you people keep saying chicago isn't as good as before but as i can remember there isn't a band that had stayed around for as long as they did so obviously there doing something right
I'm neutral on the Peter vs. Jason debate The single most underrated move the band ever made was bringing in Bill Champlin. Bill has made the band shine through both the Cetera and Scheff eras. And Jimmy Pankow kicks serious ass.
Let me help you Tages72 on the Peter vs. Jason debate. Chicago with Cetera singing lead or duet, 12 #1 hits. With Jason 1 #1 hit. Cetera solo career, 5 #1 hits. Scheff 0! Last two albums with Cetera (16 & 17) went #9 & #4 on the Billboard Charts. Highest Chicago has gone since the departure of Cetera, #35. Note, Jason has been with Chicago longer than Peter was with them. Thus, if Jason is as good as Peter, he should have had "some" hits. Is there really a debate?
There is one because people will argue over anything nowadays. I don't care who charted the most, nor do I mind if you prefer to compare the two. Peter fans should enjoy his music just as Jason fans should stick with his. Better yet, just be a fan of the band as a whole and appreciate the other members' contributions. That's the whole point of my previous post.
You're right Tages72! I guess I'm still upset that Cetera left and Kath passed-on and felt at both times the group should have split; thus any replacement, Dacus, Champlin, Scheff, Imboden or Howland cannot not live up to the standards of the origianl members. I know Jason is doing his best, and saw him in concert right after Cetera left. He's alright! I guess I get upset when someone states that the new member is better than the old member. I'm just an old fan of the originals.
I read ya, man. I discovered the band in 1986. I did get Peter's solo album along with Chicago 18 since I was aware that Peter's leaving was a huge change. Later on, I learned the band had started out as The Big Thing/Chicago Transit Authority and the switch to a more commercial Pop sound. I was saddened to hear how Terry died, and I know he was an excellent musician in his own right. I respect the originals and like I said before, Jimmy Pankow still rules!
Guys, I've been reding your comments and agree with you both.
To me, the evolution of Chicago has been some kind of well managed, eventhough we all would like to see the original band reunited, I think we should appreciate each stage (of the 5) as a very unique one. late 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000. The most important thing here (I guess)is that the band has somekind of DEEP ROOTS that have been maintining these guys alive and unified for so long such as 4 decades.
"They don't make them like they used to" if we talk in proffesional musical terms. Just check it out all the new bands and compare the "school" of each of the memebers of the band, they all are PROFFESIONALS. Long live to Chicago!!!!
Ofcourse they can still play it by memory. First off the song is incredibly easy for the horn section. it's a few blats and runs. These guys probably still have songs memorised from high school and JR. high marchign band. Considering the amount of tiems they've done this material ... yeah it's still memorised, no they don't need charts, they could literaly play this stuff in thier sleep. Actually the sax player I think IS ASLEEP. he still sounds great
Funny to see the horns sitting to rehearse. With 40 years of arrangements interesting to know where they store horn arrangments, is it all stored in computers now? does the horn section ever have to pull out actual charts to refresh before tours or is it possible they keep all this stuff memorized?
Me too..... As i've said repeatedly, he brought an element Tris lacks totally, and that's presence and electricity. Each time Danny hit a drum, you can tell he put his passion into it and it made the drums stand out. No offense to Trisfans, but each time I've seen Tris do drums, he doesn't make as much noise as Danny Seraphine did so the drumming sounds weak when Tris does it live.
i am so tired of people comparing peter cetera to jason scheff if he was so bad why don't people try to do a better job and plus they brought jason when chicago was very popular. so people have to quit comparing peter and jason
baloney! jason sounds GREAT as a bass player and singer. he did hit a slightly flat note at approximately 00:56 seconds but does a fantastic job. plus, they're rehearsing and smart singers don't go all out in rehearsal in order to conserve their voice.
He should be given more credit. This was after all, a rehearsal. He does have a good voice and I know he cracks and goes flat a lot but he knows people who are not hardcore musicians wont appreciate the song unless it's in the original key it was recorded and he does that with every song he performs. It increases his episodes of messing the notes up sometimes but he tries. Even Cetera doesn't sing most songs in original key anymore so at least give him some leeway with that. He's trying.
Thank you for posting this. I've never heard this song Live in my life since it came out in 1986. It sounds pretty good, Jason Scheff is no Peter Cetera, but he can still hit those high notes.
