Affirmative Action (AA) is bull. How is it right to hold someone back from a job because of their race. AA does just that. SCENARIO: 2 men apply for same job one man black other white. If there is a test like most good paying state jobs the black man will receive what they call preference points. So lets say they both get the same score on the test. Once the preference points are applied 10 pts will be awarded to the black applicant due to race alone. Is this the best man for the job?
@interdemilan100 We start by not repeating the same mistakes slave owners used to make. They would backward rationalize 'justified discrimination' you dont become what you hate, to fix what you hate. You simply fix it by lobbying for laws that punish those who have been PROVEN to discriminate (AA does not do this) do not participate in reverse discrimination yourself. Im not for justifying favoring one group over another. You are confusing giving equal opportunity with giving equal outcomes.
Jesse Jackson uses affirmative action as a race card towards jobs that doesn't have many African-American men or women; one example the firehouse here got sued for being racist due to in-fact there's no black person working or even remotely applying for the spot. Now my friend who's dreamed is to become a fireman will not get that wish until the fire department hires one black person.
'Paid for by democrats' So? guy spoke his mind, how many politicians do that? let alone democrats. Listen to Obamas take on AA he gives one of his yes no answers as usual cause hes an idiot like most dems
Im a Hispanic and i believe Affirmative action has got to be the most ineffective thing at promoting fairness.. how the hell is it fair to encourage one group OVER another... ALL should be encouraged equally... ALL should start with an equal chance.. if the results afterward are different then dont be suprised! we are all different and so our outcomes may reflect this.. so lets acknowledge our differences and learn to deal with it instead of making believe everyone is the same.
Affirmative Action has been a fiasco for 50 years. One reason for its failure is that white females, who should never have been a target group, have stolen 90% + of the benefits. The result is that Black Americans, Puerto Ricans, American Indians & the groups AA was actually CREATED FOR remain living in squalor as they did 50+ years ago. These are the same white females whose abortion rights "STRUGGLE" has caused the death of 30 million babies, a disproportionate # of them being black children.
...can somehow disadvantage future individuals who are a member of the named race, c'mon. I don't think my black freinds are disadvantaged because of some heinous act of slavery performed 400 years ago, and they sure as hell shouldn't be given more opportunity than me because of that, it should be the more quality hard working individual reaping benefits. This is the premise of AA: Racism justifies racism. Racism is inherently evil, nomatter who it's aimed at, there are no double standards.
@ChicagoFan32 oh theres double standards dude ... oh there is ... right now ... the blacks in America have it all cuz of AA ..... i went to Trooper school ... and it was based on a 50% shit ... 2 blacks in the group ... both at the bottom ... but both passed ... cuz of their Race ..."BLACK" ... Why can't it be the most qualified person for Christ sake, why? Why should a less qualified African American, be chosen over a more qualified white man? I would prefer a more qualified black guy be chosen over a less qualified white guy. AA fans the flames of hate for those who truly are racist and discriminatory. It's not about race. if you think affirmative action is a form of inequality then you would have to assume that we have equality without it; which we obviously don't. @lacusftw So was Pigford v. Glickman. So was closing down the Prince William County School District for five years in the sixties. Guess what? The people who got bumped by that stuff, they're still alive. They can't shake the effect that those things have had on their lives. And if it interests you, people with black sounding names get called back for jobs something like 75% less than their equally qualified white sounding name colleagues.
how is making companys hire capable people of color wrong? for so long people of color were not hired capable or otherwise !! i am not saying go get ray ray off the block and let him run ENRON oops mabey we should have let ray ray give it a go he couldnt do any worse.
Forcing companies to hire capable people of color requires those companies to look at the people's race, which, by definition, is racist. There is no reason to give preference to minorities - companies should be hiring the most qualified people, regardless of race. If they can only hire 100 people, and they all turn out to be white, or all black - TOO BAD for everyone else! They picked the most qualified people, and that's that!
affirmative action is legalized discrimination....I lost my job cause I was white years ago...I was the only one that was qualified for the job, but when they realised that hired too many whites..I was fired.
@Perseiden2 This was in 1989. I got a job with Boston Edison. That was the major electric utility co in Boston area. Nows its known as N-Star. I was hired with 8 others in agroup. i was the only one with an electrical backround. Three of the 9 men were black. Two of of the three, were doing poorly and were fired. Because of this, they need to "let go" two whites. I was one of the whites.
affirmative action is racial discrimination against white americans end of story.
america has a government that discriminates by race on a government level and there is no denying that and there is no excuse for discriminating individuals because of their race. I support freedom and civil rights for all people including whites
Affirmative Action benefits all minorities including white women. More white women and disabled people have benefitted from affirmative action than black people. Yet somehow people only think its for black people. Reading the comments on here exposes people dont understand what affirmative action is and actually show their own bigotry exposing why affirmative action is neccessary. We have not arrived at a point in time in this nation were affirmative action isnt needed
@thecaliforniaknight There is an easy explanation for why AA has benefited more women and disabled people than it has blacks. The combined female and disabled persons population is much greater than that of the black population, and it leads me to believe that you don't know how to read data correctly like a scientist can. Here is your homework assignment: What PERCENTAGE of AA-benefited people are women, disabled, and black?
@thecaliforniaknight (cont) Additionally, how many and what percentages of these people can be classified into more than one group? I'm referring to black females, disabled blacks, and disabled females.
@thecaliforniaknight It doesn't matter who it does and doesn't benefit. The point is it creates an uneven playing field; namely, it puts white males at an unfair disadvantage.
@thecaliforniaknight Affirmative action is a misnomer. It should be called discrimination because it judges a person based solely on race, gender, ethnicity, etc. 50 years from now we will laugh at how stupid we were for lowering the standard for hiring someone because of their genitals or skin tone.
And it doesn't even go to all minorities. Asians and Indian people don't get the "good side" of affirmative action. And that's not fair, either. Keep affirmative action, but make it based on economic needs instead of race.
As a black woman I view AA as offensive and racist.
And if I recall many black students who got into a University through AA dropped out. Mainly because a lot of them were not prepared or qualified to be in the school in the first place. And people wonder: why the achievement gap?
@isieAB There is no one solution, but I know that education takes a lot of persistence. Coming from a disadvantaged background is no excuse, although often one I hear a lot. I'd start tackling the issues in public education, but that can only go so far. My experience with other disadvantaged youths was that a lot of them just did not want to do the work. I think there needs to be a serious turnaround, but if minorities such as blacks look at themselves as the underdogs they proceed a...
@Star16 Have you asked yourself why they can't be bothered, is it because their braincells aren't working or do you think it could be the system, media, expectations from teachers and people like yourself that help perpetuate the same sterotypes about the so called underprivileged. For god's sake, if you came from the same background I doubt you would be so rosey right now.
@strawberrylaralara Actually, I did come from the same background and I am pretty rosey right now, thank you. The ONLY stereotypes that are being perpetuated are that the underprivileged are unable to achieve anything without the so-called system or media putting one foot into the door for them. My only concern is that they do reach these "expectations" on their on and not because somebody wanted them to be their token.
@Star16 Listen I myself could have taken affirmative action in my country, I didn't and worked my way to a degree without the help of it. But without a doubt it does work for certain people. It's mean to equalize things out this is it's merits. And for people to say that they think that it completely benefits one race or gender or disability person over that of the other, you have to see that there are underlying privileges that are already in place for them. Maybe they aren't as obvious.
@strawberrylaralara If an individual is already perfectly eligible, I don't see the point of Affirmative Action. Yes, I would say that it does benefit one race or one gender. That is what its purpose is meant for- to help the minority get one foot in the door. Not even the necessarily, the underprivileged minority either. When it comes down to the core, I believe it is primitive and outdated to consider race or gender as a leading (yet irrelevant) factor of the an individual's merit.
The ONLY Affirmative Action (if you you would even call it that) is to advance those who are financially unable. Anyone who meets the qualifications, but comes from an underprivileged lower class background are the ONLY people that are exceptional. Excelling, while being from a lower socioeconomic background is something that builds credibility. Being a woman or black has nothing to do with your personality, your character, or your identity as a individual. You are simply born that way.
@strawberrylaralara You're the one that needs to wake up. Accepting any applicant while regarding their race as actually important is racist no matter what the intentions are. Accepting an applicant because they're a certain race is no better than denying an applicant because they're certain race. It's the principle of the matter. All applicants should be based on merit-not skin color. That's what we should be aiming for- not this "pay-back" prejudice that we enforce through AA.
That's what we should be aiming for not this "pay-back" prejudice that we enforce through AA.
@Star16 However there are over 300 studies that have followed black people in their workplace and state that they are doing extremely well and in most cases doing better than their white counterparts. I do believe in affirmative action. In a very inherent and often covert racist soceity in which you live in, the cards are mostly stacked against people with colour from getting adequate housing, jobs and even getting decent health care.
@Star16 From the last statement. Other studies have stated that blacks who applicants from jobs had 50% more likelihood of getting an interview than those with sterotypical names. And you can say that A A offends you, you need to wake up to the racism that is hurting you and your children. Shine a light on what's happening.
@Star16 Yes but what about the ones that actually did do will once they were in the learning institution? How can you say, that no affirmative actions doesn't work then. Come on it does work for some people...also women!!!!!
So brave of you to admit that! I really encourage you to speak out about this. I am also a minority but unfortunately my race does not receive the benefits of affirmative action. Thankfully I did not need it, but I know several kids that do.
Seeing as Affirmative Action benefits even blacks with low GPAs for schools and unqualified applicants for jobs it's motive really says: We're not accepting you on merit, you're just too dumb to get in on your own so we're basing everything on your skin color. While other non minorities are discriminated against just because they're white.
well, Im black and i dont see the big deal with this affirmative action thing. Im somewhat sucessful and have worked very hard to get where i am. I dont believe i got a job because of affirmative action but a a minority, you never know. However, for all of you people against affirmative action, please know that quotas by law are illegal and affirmative action does not allow for quotas at all.
Seventy percent (70%) of the country is white and thirty percent (30%) being other, with 13% being Black of which 40% is unemployed not to count the number of incarcerated, 14% Hispanics and 3% listed as other. The numbers dont lie. I dont have a solution and based on the responses here neither does anyone else.
If we were to do away with AA we would we find ourselves discriminating once again against white women and other minorities? Can we truly say that we have arrived at a date when we no longer need some sort of AA to afford qualified minority candidates a fair shot at a decent wage?
The problem with getting rid of affirmative action lies with a reversal in history when white men hired white men only with the exception of the secretary.
This brought about the necessity for affirmative action. Later, other ethic groups began to speak up about their encounters of the need not apply. Then white women took their stance on the stage for affirmative action. It wasnt until white men began to feel that they werent given the job (promotion) because they were now being discriminated against for being white, a sort of reverse discrimination.
This topic itself is based on racism and inequality. It amazes me how we tend to forget and slant the truth. Affirmative Action was created because many minorities were being shut out of jobs and government contracts. Blacks in particular were overlooked for employment even when they were clearly qualified for a position. It took an investigation into the allegations from government agencies to find that what this group was complaining about was in fact true.
The most important thing to remember is that affirmative action does not ensure one race a job over another. It ensures that all races are considered for jobs. Without affirmative action, many minorities would not have gotten jobs in this country. Today, we do not see it as needed, but in the past it was crucial.
Today we need Equal opportunity laws. Not so sure about affirmative action.
PART 1"The most important thing to remember is that affirmative action does not ensure one race a job over another"
Yes it does. The whole incident with the 10 white cops who passed the test and the three black men who didn't was affermative action. Nobody got the job!
A white man whos passed was dyslecsus and had been studying for months on end for the test and wasn't allowed the job and passed.
What Affermative action says is a certain amount of blacks, hispanics, women, mentally disabled,
In Affermative action, there is no spot for white men. So every day white men get laid off because not many black people are there, and if not many black people are there, the whole buisness is shut down due to Affermative action.
Black people do not need this, nor does anybody else, you coul spot if there is too many white men in a buisness just by a reseme of a black man, if the black man or woman etc. has a good reseme and doesnt get the job, i pretty obvious.
This is one of the few issues that I support Obama on... kind of
Obama's 'views' seem a bit shady, and not well explained. But we need a moderate form of it for many reasons. I'm gonna have to say McCain was wrong on this one
I Support equality, thus I do NOT support Affirmative action policies. My family was disadvantaged, being irish, in NYC back in the past. "Irish need not apply" It was racist, but I don't recieve affirmative action, nor do I believe I should, since my family, in this time of inequality, with no slaves or affirmative action, by working hard. Affirmative action tells people that they don't have to work as hard due to their family history. (in a nutshell: affirmative action=racist)
Affirmative action is not racist because it doesn't only help one race or disadvantage one race. No minority group is left out when it comes to affirmative action.
Affirmative Action (AA) is bull. How is it right to hold someone back from a job because of their race. AA does just that. SCENARIO: 2 men apply for same job one man black other white. @Star16 From the last statement. Other studies have stated that blacks who applicants from jobs had 50% more likelihood of getting an interview than those with sterotypical names. And you can say that A A offends you, you need to wake up to the racism that is hurting you and your children. Shine a light on what's happening.

How do you explain bans on race blind civil service tests then in the name of affirmative action ?
Perseiden2 1 year ago
@Star16 Yes but what about the ones that actually did do will once they were in the learning institution? How can you say, that no affirmative actions doesn't work then. Come on it does work for some people...also women!!!!!

@Star16

Why must a job go to an under-qualified candidate simply because they are a minority.
Alphazombie 2 years ago 2
Seventy percent (70%) of the country is white and thirty percent (30%) being other, with 13% being Black of which 40% is unemployed not to count the number of incarcerated, 14% Hispanics and 3% listed as other. The numbers dont lie. I dont have a solution and based on the responses here neither does anyone else.

If we were to do away with AA we would we find ourselves discriminating once again against white women and other minorities? Can we truly say that we have arrived at a date when we no longer need some sort of AA to afford qualified minority candidates a fair shot at a decent wage?

Why not just make AA about socio-economic status rather than race???

The problem with getting rid of affirmative action lies with a reversal in history when white men hired white men only with the exception of the secretary.
00milkdud7 2 years ago

PART 2: etc.
