  • They were a bit over the top...But I really did like them~

  • darkebony, The Supremes were a blueprint. Every black girl group was and has, basically copied them. That's a compliment. This was a fabulous song, before the 3 degrees became popular. It was thier first top 40 hit. I was in college at the time and my roomate had an alarm clock, I used to wake up to this song. Absolutely love it.

  • @cookie2690 I understand thatI remember that well you had all the girl groups at that time trying to look like the supremes but how far did they get? not very, you have to be unique other wise you come off as generic. Now when these girls got there own image they blew up and did pretty well .I was in college and any time there were three black girls on tv most people would say thats the supremes and alot of the time it wasnt may have been the marvelettes, bluebelles, etc

  • Wow!

  • These girls were good, but why would you come on Ed sullivan looking identical to the Supremes? the gowns and the big wigs make up gee and then you wonder why you dont get anywhere untll you get your own image.

  • @darkebony i think as well... dont ilmulate graviate that spark

  • @darkebony These girls were more than good! As for the image, it was a mainstream image for most of the female vocal groups back then, including the Vandellas, the Emotions, et al. As for me, I'm more interested in the talent....and Fay, Sheila, and Val had more talent then all 9 of the Supremes put together! They were classy, too, and sophisticated. They may not of caught on like they should have here in the U.S., but elsewhere (especially Japan and the U.K.), they were the #1 Divas!

  • @proverbs1824 yes I remember very well, Im 61 and a hair dresser and I was into fashion at that time also and every body pretty much was the same. Yes every group did sing better than the supremes but some how they just could not reach that same level of fame for what reason I dont know, but some how that was the dream to have that kind of fame.

  • @darkebony The Supremes had a steady team of writers/producers after 1963 (HDH) until 1967 around the time Florence left and HDH. After that, the Supremes didn't chart as well. While the 3 Degrees had steady management (Richard Barrett), they didn't have steady producers or even record companies. When they had success at Roulette, Barrett moved them to PI, where they really hit big, and then he moved them again. I think he hurt them more than helped them. But, they still held their own!

  • Oh this is a tear-jerker!

  • Have never seen this. What a group - their music was wonderful and evoke such happy memories of the 70s. Thank you for posting this.

  • Damn, they can sing. I just keep watching this. Singing like this during that era was really saying something, even tho this was around the time black music went from Rhythm&Blues to Soul. Those soaring vocals right there are the reason for the name change.

  • Seems like they might've been lookin at Valerie Holiday as the lead singer before Sheila Ferguson. I prefer Valerie.

  • OMG, Thank you so much for shearing ! I bought this on 45 when it first came out then I bought the album ( still have them ) and look how far they have come ! to me these three ladys Sheila, Valerie, and Fayette will always be the REAL THREE DEGREES !

  • I sang this coming down the isle at my wedding 29 years ago.

  • Wow! This is amazing, thank you so much for posting. x

  • Anyone have any idea what show this performance is from???

  • Excellent live verfsion to this song which brings back so many memories. Thanks for the post.

  • Stunning performance by three great girls xxxx

  • One of the most underrated girl groups in music history...The Three Degrees were IT, BABY! OW!

  • @OrmondTheMagnificent Very under rated! These girls put the Supremes to shame! A Toast of Love to Fayette, Sheila, and Valerie....The CLASSIC Three Degrees!

  • @proverbs1824 Yeah, they did put the Supremes to shame on this one (although they have a very Supremes look in this clip). The Three Degrees gave the "new" Supremes with Jean Terrell some stiff competition in 1970. Just a couple of weeks after this show, the Supremes went number one r&b with "Stoned Love". Still, after seeing and hearing this, you can't help but to feel that while the Three Degrees' stars were rising, the Supremes' stars were fading...

  • @OrmondTheMagnificent I'm a big Supremes fan! Have always loved them and they have always been my favorites, but vocally, the Three Degrees (in my opinion) take the prize! They each, individualy and collectively, can outsing Diana, Mary, Florence, Jean, and Cindy (as well as Lynda). Now, Scherrie and Susaye might pose some serious competition. The Classic members of the Three Degrees (Faye, Sheila, and Valerie) had a great, no, magnificent set of pipes!

  • @proverbs1824 Saw Somos Novious. Brilliant! Flawless! Yeah, out of the Supremes only Scherrie and Susaye could've pulled something like that off. As far as all of them singing better Diana? Sure (with the possible exception of Cindy Birdsong, whose always been a little pitchy to me, but still my favorite outside of Flo). Overall, to me, the girl groups that hit it big in the 70s were better singers than the 60s groups. The 3 Degrees, The Emotions, Love Unlimited, First Choice...loved 'em all!

  • @OrmondTheMagnificent check out the youtube post of the Three Degrees singing 'Somos Novious' and tell me what you think. On this one all three share the lead. They blow the Supremes right out of the competition! The Degrees version of MacArthur Park is another great example......well, just about anything they sing. The Three Degrees were a "true" vocal group, unlike the Supremes (I still love you Supremes, but I love the Three Degrees, too)!

  • @proverbs1824 Good version of MacArthur Park, too, although I never really cared much for the song itself. They have almost a hypnotic way with their harmony that just pulls you in...

  • oh my they sound really good

  • I thought I just imagined this song years ago. I have googled and yahooed and nothing came up, then wham I took a chance and searched again, voila.

    Thanx for this post!

  • Beautiful song. Thanks.

  • thanx 4 posting this live version..i luv this song

  • The Classic line up of Three Degrees! We miss you Faye!

  • The harmony and blending of their voices are incredible!! IMHO, the best line-up vocally!!

  • Thanks for posting. I like this video very much!!!
