This rule was added in the 15th century when the rule giving pawns the option of initially moving two squares was introduced. The rationale is so that a pawn cannot pass by another pawn using the two-square move without the risk of it being captured.
well, if more than 20 years is a "new rule" ok. and i said 20 because im that old and since i play chess i know that move. i guess is far more old, but yeah, you need to be a good chess player to understand that move is not a stupid move
i did a little investigation, look this This rule was added in the 15th century when the rule giving pawns the option of initially moving two squares was introduced. The rationale is so that a pawn cannot pass by another pawn using the two-square move without the risk of it being captured.
En Passant is really that good a move. Look at the vid. The black pawn can then be instantly taken by a white pawn. But anyway, I was dazzled when my PC pulled it on me too!
@gemtube2008: Stupid rules are stupid rules regardless if they have been there for centuries. En passant is not that annoying but the 3 repeated moves leading to a draw rule is simply retarded. A cornered king should not be able to do a little dance and get a draw.
I appreciate that you included the word "en passant" in the title, but you should remove the "wtf" messages and have it be instructional for all the people who don't know better.
well i never played chess through a book, which is my fault, i had my uncle show me and i would play with friends for years, till one day i played against someone who knew all the rules, and did that, i created a big argument and looked like a fool cuz i didnt think it was real, he didnt know the name of the move, so you can only imagine.
but it is a real move and i felt better learning it, i asked if we could start over cuz of that. i really had no idea, played chess for years, and didnt know
I was looking for a video to show a friend of mine this move, he didn´t know it. but damn, your video was so much fun!!! AhAUhAUHA It´s actually a very weird move if you´ve never seen it before and windows just pulls it on you without any explanation! hahaha! Worst way to learn! :-P
Even though Bobby Fischer was without a doubt one of the greatest players, Alyosha Karamazov would never admit that he was "the best player of all time", for the sole reason that there was a whole plethora of great Soviet/Russian chess players :p
And that is just your personal opinion, nothing more. Capablanca, Fischer, Kasparov are all great players, who have never played each other, what's all this "best ever player" nonsense?
It's called En Passant and it is a legal move. Too bad relatively few people know of this. I have been called a cheater, a hacker and much worse when pulling this move. On the other hand, some people try to apply the En Passant rule everywhere and when you reject it, they go medieval.
Just google En Passant and avoid future mistakes. The move on the video wasn't exactly bright either way :)..
No. The computer didn't cheat. En passant is a capture made by a pawn. If black's pawn was on the fourth rank and white moved their pawn two squares, if black's pawn was right next to white's pawn, black can take it anyway as if white's pawn had only moved one square.

Now you can just recapture the pawn with the knight, with decent compensation for the lost pawn.

It would be better to learn the basic rules of chess before claiming the software has a functional defect.

I sometimes advance my pawns to the fifth rank (if I'm white or fourth rank if I'm black) just to capture En Passant!
