Yeah I think some people are being a bit thoughtless. Maybe I am biased, because Rachel Tucker was the first Elphaba I ever saw (and the first time I saw the show) but she was ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! And I know a good voice when I hear one, because I'm a member of a professional youth choir who have performed all around the world! Literally! So yeah, you may not like the person, but to say they've got a bad voice is ridiculous! Would they really be playing the role if they did? Sorry 4 the essay!

Saw this 3 weeks ago, the girl playing glinda was awesome but the girls playing elpheba really let it down along with lea mead as fiyero, he was not great either.

I saw this a week ago when I was at an vacation to London and it was SO AMAZING!!! Best musical ever!!! My mom loved Glinda, she was very funny. But the main characters wasn't the same as in this video though.
In London it's Alexia Khadime and Dianne Pilkington as the leads. In this, it was made for the American tour cast, it's Stephanie J. Block and Kendra Kassenbaum x
Thank you o much for aying that! Im so sick of people trying to play off different actreses against each other saying that one is better than the other. All shows are different, and every actress is different. I think each actress has brought something different to the role, and the've ALL done a fantatic job at it. My only critisism is that it bums me out that i can't sing as well as them.
Just shut the flying monkeys up all of you! All of the Elphabas are amazing and that is the reason they were cast. I, personally, like all the Elphabas. They each have strengths and weaknesses whether it be in songs, or scenes. And that is why every single performance is slightly different. Its live theatre, so no two shows are exact carbon copies of eachother. Live theatre productions are like snowflakes.

Just enjoy the clips already. I know this comment is a little old, but I completely agree with you. All of the cast members are wonderful, whether they were in the original production or not. I love Idina and Kristin, but when I got to see Wicked in Hollywood, it was Eden Espinoza and Megan Hilty, and they were INCREDIBLE! I absolutely loved them. Everyone has a favorite and all, but that doesn't give anyone the right to say any of the other actors suck or shouldn't be in the show.
I love Eden and Megan, and Caissie, and Erin, and Teal, and Julie (Reiber), and Julia, and Sho, and Stephanie, and Idina, and Kristy, and Carmen, and Willemijn, and Kerry, and Ana, and Kristin, and Lucy, and Katie, and the list goes on!

Well his opinion is wrong, SJB literally is perfect at singing. I'm not talking about whether someone likes her voice or not, but she knows exactly how to sing and her technique is virtually perfect.
SJB did all the "auditions" to get funding etc... but they wrote songs and then adapted them to the actress such as kirstin with no one mourns the wicked
Ok, so both of you are definately wrong. First of all, when they are writing a musical they do not write songs for individuals. They write the songs how they want them to be and then they find the person to fit the part. SJB was the fist person ever to sing Defying gravity in cali. The pre-broadway tryout. Then Idina Menzel took it over on Broadway... got it?
Err sorry to add fuel to the fire because i'm not sure about the whole SJB/Idina thing. But it says in the Grimmerie that Kristin wanted to use her full range and top soprano notes so the music was written taken this into account. So the obviously do write some of the music to suit the singers.
Im not realy gonna get into it too much, but no SJB didnt do the pre-broadway tryout in Cali, Idina did. and even Julia Murney says in a video-interview that "all of elphaba's music is written in idina's pocket" you can even listen to old versions where IDINA is singing & the notes and even WORDS are completely different.
To all of this all I have to say is that in some articles I've read the composers of the msuical stated that they wrote Galinda as a Soprano and Elphaba as a Belt. Now if it was true that SJB did the pre-run and was to be the first Elphaba, I would of not liked her as an origianl, I mean she shouts and her voice to light just like Julia's. Plus Idina has that special quality that relly made her the best Elphaba up to date, followed by Kerri Ellys.

personally i think idina has a much better voice. especially in terms of vocal power! this lady seems to much like the "wicked witch of the west" from the film rather than Elphie.
the person that's singing here isn't the same person that sang in children in need. the person that sang in children in need was Idina Menzel, and Idina sings way better than her, to my opinion of course
For everyone saying SJB is not good, you need a reality check. The part was written for her, she was originally cast, not Idina. They only chose Idina to do the role because she had a bigger name. Stephanie has the voice that the composer wanted. While Idina made the role famous and I love her, Stephanie does have a great sound.
Sorry, that's not true. Stephanie did the role in some workshops, but it wasn't written for her. The first person to sing Defying Gravity was Julia Murney in the late 90s (and of course the ending is Idina's invention). The Wizard and I was also written explicitly for Idina's voice.
And they didn't recast for fame reasons. They held an open audition, which is not what you do when you want a big name. Not that Idina was a big name then. Wicked is what made her a star, not the other way around.
SJB's voice sounds gross and screechy or something. Sometimes IM sounds screechy but SJB sounded it alot. Idina is the best because she's the original. She raised the bar very high for those that followed and not all have been able to reach that bar, SJB is one of them.
Well, we know that SJB is better than ANY of us so I don't think there is much room for us to critisize her. Just because her voice is quite different from Idina's, it doesn't mean its bad. She brings another dimension to Elphaba, as each knew person playing her does.
Still, my 'first-elphaba' was SJB. Maybe your first really is the most special. Also I do adore IM she is a wonderful actress and singer. I think my post is more about interpretation than talent. Afterall I may have an arts degree, but I certainly don't have a Grammy!
Looking at it another way - This is an Act I finale and as an artistic device it is a 'passage' which signifies why this story is worth telling. For Elphy it is the graduation to a position of control which manifests here as strength and commitment to her cause. Sometimes I feel IM comes across as a little crazy rather than powerfully inspired. But then their artistic interpretations of the character have always different in the maturity/age at which elphabar becomes 'the witch'.
The sheer power here is amazing and more inspiring than that I see in IM's performance.
In terms of the power - remember the line which Elphabar gives before the song, telling Glinda that it is the Wizard who 'should be afraid of me'. For a girl who has just discovered that she is not only powerful but can actually control her power - the power conveyed in this performance is something which I feel is sometimes a less strongly conveyed through IM's performance of the song.
i saw this with school!!! its so good, even from the back of the dress circle!! our teacher is friends with nessarose so shes going to comein and bring some of her cast woooooooo!! idina menzel is amazing, hard to think that at the show she is doing the whole performance live!!!

Haha I laugh at people who think steph is bad. Steph is my favorite and has the most consistency to her voice out of all the elphabas..except for perhaps Julia. I think Steph, Julia, Shoshana and Eden are perfect!
When I was in London last week I was able to buy tickets on the fly for the evening performance of Wicked on 10/18. Idina was amazing-the whole cast did a great job that night. If you have a chance to see see it in London before the end of the year, I would recommend it. When I am in London after the first of the new year I'm hoping to see it with Kerry (sp?) in the lead role.
i have heard from many sources that they are producing the screenplay and it IS in the works, but so far ahead that they haven't released anything about it yet.
Huahuhaua "don't know anyone among my friends who ever heard of her before wicked"... She plays Maurren in OBC of rent, a blockbuster, i don't know how they never ever heard about here....
She will be on broadway again, with the musical Pirate Queen, of cameron.... She just get out wicked on tour because this musical... and if you think she is the worst singer you've ever heard it's time to pay more atention.... idina menzel is the best!? I don't think so, she doensn't know how to breath...

They used thats video for almost every promo for Wicked anywhere but this is from befor Wicked in london premierd so they figured why waste time and money on something we have...but Kerry and Dianne wouldn't do it anyway cuz they were in wicked then Idina and Helen where

umm this isnt the london wicked promo coz its steph and kendra so its the original tour cast lol! kinda gave it away that one of the reviews was from the new york times lol! i do like this cast SJB is brill but kendra is ok somtimes a little anooying lol!

Yeah.. sorry the others, but I saw a lot of elphabas, and they sound like glinda´s voice! and it´s wrong, ´cause it´s sucks the same type of voices in all the role! That´s the reason why Idina is the best! Strong and DELIGHTFUL voice! Yeah :)

Well his opinion is wrong, SJB literally is perfect at singing. I'm not talking about whether someone likes her voice or not, but she knows exactly how to sing and her technique is virtually perfect.

SJB did all the "auditions" to get funding etc... but they wrote songs and then adapted them to the actress such as kirstin with no one mourns the wicked

Ok, so both of you are definately wrong. First of all, when they are writing a musical they do not write songs for individuals. They write the songs how they want them to be and then they find the person to fit the part. SJB was the fist person ever to sing Defying gravity in cali. The pre-broadway tryout. Then Idina Menzel took it over on Broadway... got it?

Err sorry to add fuel to the fire because i'm not sure about the whole SJB/Idina thing. But it says in the Grimmerie that Kristin wanted to use her full range and top soprano notes so the music was written taken this into account. So the obviously do write some of the music to suit the singers.
That's it. My mouth is zipped now.

Im not realy gonna get into it too much, but no SJB didnt do the pre-broadway tryout in Cali, Idina did. and even Julia Murney says in a video-interview that "all of elphaba's music is written in idina's pocket" you can even listen to old versions where IDINA is singing & the notes and even WORDS are completely different.

To all of this all I have to say is that in some articles I've read the composers of the msuical stated that they wrote Galinda as a Soprano and Elphaba as a Belt. Now if it was true that SJB did the pre-run and was to be the first Elphaba, I would of not liked her as an origianl, I mean she shouts and her voice to light just like Julia's. Plus Idina has that special quality that relly made her the best Elphaba up to date, followed by Kerri Ellys.

For everyone saying SJB is not good, you need a reality check. The part was written for her, she was originally cast, not Idina. They only chose Idina to do the role because she had a bigger name. Stephanie has the voice that the composer wanted. While Idina made the role famous and I love her, Stephanie does have a great sound.

Sorry, that's not true. Stephanie did the role in some workshops, but it wasn't written for her. The first person to sing Defying Gravity was Julia Murney in the late 90s (and of course the ending is Idina's invention). The Wizard and I was also written explicitly for Idina's voice.
And they didn't recast for fame reasons. They held an open audition, which is not what you do when you want a big name. Not that Idina was a big name then. Wicked is what made her a star, not the other way around.

SJB's voice sounds gross and screechy or something. Sometimes IM sounds screechy but SJB sounded it alot. Idina is the best because she's the original. She raised the bar very high for those that followed and not all have been able to reach that bar, SJB is one of them.

Well, we know that SJB is better than ANY of us so I don't think there is much room for us to critisize her. Just because her voice is quite different from Idina's, it doesn't mean its bad. She brings another dimension to Elphaba, as each knew person playing her does.

Still, my 'first-elphaba' was SJB. Maybe your first really is the most special. Also I do adore IM she is a wonderful actress and singer. I think my post is more about interpretation than talent. Afterall I may have an arts degree, but I certainly don't have a Grammy!

Looking at it another way - This is an Act I finale and as an artistic device it is a 'passage' which signifies why this story is worth telling. For Elphy it is the graduation to a position of control which manifests here as strength and commitment to her cause. Sometimes I feel IM comes across as a little crazy rather than powerfully inspired. But then their artistic interpretations of the character have always different in the maturity/age at which elphabar becomes 'the witch'.

The sheer power here is amazing and more inspiring than that I see in IM's performance.
In terms of the power - remember the line which Elphabar gives before the song, telling Glinda that it is the Wizard who 'should be afraid of me'. For a girl who has just discovered that she is not only powerful but can actually control her power - the power conveyed in this performance is something which I feel is sometimes a less strongly conveyed through IM's performance of the song.

Haha I laugh at people who think steph is bad. Steph is my favorite and has the most consistency to her voice out of all the elphabas..except for perhaps Julia. I think Steph, Julia, Shoshana and Eden are perfect!

When I was in London last week I was able to buy tickets on the fly for the evening performance of Wicked on 10/18. Idina was amazing-the whole cast did a great job that night. If you have a chance to see see it in London before the end of the year, I would recommend it. When I am in London after the first of the new year I'm hoping to see it with Kerry (sp?) in the lead role.
