I was thinking the same thing as TDChance. Seems like if the skater was skating hard, or knocked the stick with any sort of force, one would lose his stick quite easily.
how about if the player stops behind the net, this technique only works if the player continues behinds the nets, but it also leave you vulnerbale to the opposite side were he can fake around and come back....bad technique
1. You would NEVER use this move before the player had crossed the halfway mark behind you! Other factors such as his speed, his options etc. weigh in here too. If you are able enough to understand this, it will be very effective - and that's why it is done at the highest levels of hockey (including NHL) around the world.
1. You never make this move before you know the player has crossed the halfway point. You know this from several factors such as his speed, his options and other parameters.
2. Using your logic, it would be the same as saying one should never use a poke check - ever - because WHAT IF WHAT IF WHAT IF. For that matter, one should never use the butterfly! WHAT IF the player deflected the puck over your shoulder or... WHAT IF WHAT IF WHAT IF.
Question....if you do this fingertipping idea, and you accidentally trip the player skating behind the net, is that a tripping call on the goalie? If so, would there be a lot of tripping calls if you do this consistently?
If you did this CONSTANTLY you would probably risk a tripping call - but you should never do this CONSTANTLY. It is meant to be a "tool" in your toolbox for given situations, time etc. - not as standard fare. And when it is "the time" to do this kind of thing - the fingertip technique is superior to simply wrapping your hand around the shaft.
Another aggressive goalie stick move is the "pass block": When the opponent is behind the net, and he is about to pass it to his teammate who is in position for a very good shot, the stick is extended to the end to block the pass and is positioned behind the post. You need to be standing up, pinned up against the post, pads closed tight. Be careful, if you extend the stick too soon, the man behind the net may switch to a wraparound shot. I did this move alot and it drove shooters nuts!
Yes it's a nice tip and it can save you hard work even goal against. But ! avoid doing this if your defenseman is close to you. Often you won't be able to complete your move cause your stick will kick his skates. 2nd thing keep an eye in the slot before going down, any talented player will spot you after you did it once and will let the puck up in the slot before he wraps... then you're dead.
You do NOT get a penalty for this - yes - if you whack the guy in the legs - not for an attempt at the puck at puck level. The goalie does not get penalties for poke checks either.
I tried this and it works! I did this a few times in practice and my team mates were like WTF?!?!?!?! Must be a surprise move though not to much. I hold my fingers little bit under the shaft but less than normally I did and it makes big difference. Thank for showing this!
IM well known in my league for doing this move, but i would only do it if the players is a lefty, Guys who are righty could easily avoid this move
