Bob Seger, as famous as he is, is still and always will be, just one of the guys. The ways he gives back to his community is unparalleled by anyone, anywhere. Not only is he a gifted and talented singer and songwriter, he is the very definition of what a man should be. He gave up a good 10 years of his career in order to be with his wife and raise their kids, together! His kids were shocked when they realized he was a bonafide superstar! Just a Great Man all around.
I drive around in my truck and listen to this song over and over, when I have kids, this is what they'll listen to. Nothin like the classics. I heard this song when I was a little kid and I never forgot it since. So glad I found it. I have to listen to it at least once a day.
Love a sad song - seems like every relationship has "A song" that is special. Why is it that wether they end well or not you can feel melancholy remembering the good times with a sad song. This is one of Bob's best and it really does it for me, i can see a certain gorgeous dark haired delight that i was completely intoxicated and bewitched by - but i couldn't have her.
Excuse me, i'll just play "mainstreet" again!!! Isn't emotional pain exquisite?
I remember sitting front stage at a place called "The Underground" in CO. when I was in the Army 1969 saying...WHO? If I would have only known. He was great then. What a show he put on.
I am from Michigan. When I was sixteen my friends and I would pile into a station wagon and go see Bob Seger at Aquinas High School in Southgate. It cost two bucks. He played in the gym. There were no seats, just hundreds if kids milling around and dancing with each other - total strangers having a great time.
He would play for four hours. Two bucks. Never happen again.
I am from Michigan just like Mr. Segar, and we LIVED off of this music in the late 70s and 80s when i was just a kid...this song, along with "Against the Wind" makes me think of a time that was carefree, beautiful and where the music wasnt absolute excrament like it is today...It reminds me of all the crushes I had, the friends I had....I wonder if Bob Segar realizes just how much his music means to people like me..........it will play in my soul forever....
I'm part of today's generation and I refuse to listen to today's crap music... this is where it is at. When I have kids someday, I will have them listen to this REAL music, it cleanses the soul!
this song always takes me back to '76, my first boyfriend who was from the jersey shore (same area as springsteen right after he hit it big) and having the BEST times w/everyone who enjoyed all the same great, timeless, classic music. i knew as a teenager how great a musician bob seger was and would stay. he's a legend.
Great track – what a guitar riff at the beginning & chorus. First heard this in NZ in the 80s then didn’t hear this until the mid 90s late at night in the UK. Was always completely hooked on it. Why don’t they play this and other gems on retro stations? Thanks for uploading, (also thanks for no slide-show - less bandwidth when I listen to this at work!) Kevin
I remember I would lie in bed when I was about 17 praying this or "Like a Rock" would play and when it did I would hold my breath so I wouldn't miss a note. Christ, I miss that time. I went downstairs and told my old man I'd heard the second coming and all about a guy called Bob Seger. He told me he had an album by this guy and promptly played me - Pete Seeger. I nearly poked his eyes out. We laugh about it now but I'm still kinda sore!
@MrMickthemallet Oh my gosh your comment made me tear up, then laugh. I remember listening to the radio with that intensity, too. Bob Seger brings back so many strong memories for me. Love this guy!
I had forgotten all about Bob Seger.......I owned this album as well and I played the cassette to death in my car way back then.........oh how the sound takes me back....
Great song. My parents introduced me to this. I'm 20 years old and it's hard to believe, even to myself how I can relate to some of you old timers about this song. Great music
I feel sorry for you yougins that have the music, if you can call it that, you have today. Not sure you can even call it that. Good thing for XM radio and MP3 players. Youtube is also helpful.

"Texas Cowgirls" on Westheimer in Houston back in the early 80's. She called herself "Bobby" though her name was Gwen. When I'm 80 and dying from emphysema, I'll still remember her.
This song always reminds of the girl who got away when I was 18.... and then another one came along and fried my brain.... but i never got that firts one out of my brain... I used to watch her working at McDonalds though....
aww, memories! takes me back to when i was 16 and with my ''first'' love. he loved some Bob Seger and this was ''our song. i'm 49 now, but, i still love me some Bob Seger and esp this song! this song reminds me of that special guy and i will always have them memories. and btw, Bob Seger rocks!
was a club at the beach called Night Moves. Always pictured this girl walking out and down the street. The guitar tone and touch is amazing. even the outro is stunning
I wonder if he remembers the old "Blue Light" in Midland Michigan when the band was Bob Seger and the Last Herd. I was in the warm up band..the "Satisfactions"
hoping Bob Seger decides to come to the DC area sometime soon. I can imagine sitting on a blanket, sipping a Jack Daniels lemonade and relaxing to some good old Bob Seger. that sounds like the perfect way to spend a summer evening.
Takes me back to my teenage years cruisin round in my '69 ford with my girl at the time. Not a worry in the world, thought life would roll along like that forever...Ignorance is bliss. So much older now, dunno about wiser though. Excellent memories
@GARIDONNELLON Just imagine, I'm 20 right now, so my teenage years were spent in this fucked up society, fucked up system, sure we aint drafted to war, but you cant even get into an old school fight without them coming back to shoot at you, everybodys ego trippin.. carrying weapons 24/7 like the fucking 1800's, I live in a "better" neighbourhood where crime aint as bad, but its getting there, I'd seriously rather hang out in an alley with some cool old "hobos"... atleast i still got the music!
@stonerminmcjoe hi ... are you from Canada or England.. I noticed how you spelled the word neighborhood.. with a u... and yea You are right.. I am 60 now and I often say to my 23 year old how sad it is that he could have had so much more freedom back in the day.. Now a days everybody is looking over their shoulder because they are afraid if they say the wrong thing that pisses somebody off.. and they cant barley afford to move out.. it sucks.. and it is getting worse..
@stonerminmcjoe You're not alone partner. There's many more like you around these parts, these days. It's called the country. We still drive the oldies, we still have the courage, still got the ladies, still got the faded blue denim, leather coats, and the will to live.
you must be one of those little fucks who live on mainstreet who I'd love to kill. Just remember to smile while I shove my .22 up your ass and pull the fucking trigger.
there are a couple of people I'd like to kill that live on mainstreet... lol when I do it I'll do it to this song... kinda like Richard Ramirez killed his victims to "Night Prowler" by AC/DC. Fuck yeah!!
I have been looking for one of Bobby Segers original groupies from the late 1960's Joan Jewell who lived in Ann Arbor and went to U. of M from 1968 - 1972.
I haven't been able to find out what happened to her and her family (William F. Jewel, III, wife, sister Kathy (Kiki), and another sister) after 1972. Any help with finding out how to contact them would be appreciated.
absolutely I believe that this is one of his greatest songs ever made. Actually, I think he is being very personal in this song and wish he made more that were of this genre.
You know..I don't think I could add one thing to anything that was said here..your comments capture my feelings perfectly..nice to know I am one of many..
Reminds me of a girl I dated in 77. How wonderful it would be to be able to turn the clock back to those days. Life was basketball, girls, drink and smoke. Absolutely the best time to be young in.
Im from a VERY small town in NC, and during my summers of ages 14-16,(now 32) i stayed with my mom in town and would walk and ride my bike everywhere, at any time of night or day. I have actually stood on mainstreet at midnight, and when i heard this song the first time, i was so taken by it that to this day, i have to stop and listen to that hypnotic guitar. This song takes me back to those days of simple pleasures and true freedom.
"If you are a true Seger fan, as I am, I ask you to please listen to my version of this song. I want real fans to listen in. I think you'll agree the vocals are almost spot on. I'm trying to get some more support and could use some support from non friends or family members. Constructive criticism is also welcome. Thanks.-Marc"
@dockie1964 hey dockie, not quite 16, 20, but hanging out getting stoned listening to this right now, just thought might you like to know some things never change!
I was sixteen when I went to a topless club the first time, it was 1972 and the street was call the main in montreal, this song bring me back down on main street, lovely
i first heard this song when i was 16, i'm 48 yrs old now. back then, me and my first love listened to this song many times. we used to make love to this song and now, after all these yrs, i still think of him when i hear it. it can put tears in my eyes.
I first heard this song on the radio in a friends car in my hometown in California around 1976(?).
When I first met my wife 25 years ago, who is a native of Detroit, MI I said that I liked the music from Michigan (Stooges, Motown, MC5, etc) and how I liked Bob Seger, especially the song Main Street. She then explained to me that this song was Bob's homage to Main Street in downtown Ann Arbor, MI. Since then I have been on Main Street in Ann Arbor many times over the years. Love this tune.
Reminds me of yesterday when i heard it for the first time i was driving my cavy with a smoke in the mouth hand out the window perfect song on a hot summer day
Reminds me of living the good times in the early winter, about January 1980. I was 28 or so. I was driving down Highway 22 in Oregon and noticed a gorgeous young lady walking down the snowy road. I asked her if she needed a lift and I gave her one to Bend Oregon. Talking to her was the best time of my life. I dropped that hot lady off in Bend and never saw her again. I have always felt she was a piece of me that is now missing. This song played in the car during the trip to Bend.
@ufofan1980 there is somsething very haunting about Oregon. My first wife was from Hillsboro and it fell apart because I was in the Army and an asshole.bilbo2shire

Bob Seger music reminds me of a time long ago (27 years ago) when my husband and I fell in love. We would listen to his music for hours.
