This video shows how NOT to install a window. Installing a window it the way he shows in this video will void your warranty. It is very important to caulk the rough opening all the way around before you place the new window into position. If you want to see a video that shows a window actually being installed correctly check out TSI labs
thanks for the vid. im no pro either. im a mechanic. i have to renovate an old trailer i just got. im a little overwhelmed with the whole project but you have given me comfort. thank again
Question? Does the foam sealer eventually expand enough to warp a vinyl window from the outside in and interfere with opening and closing the windows. How is it holding up so far?
Hi, I used the window foam, and it expands enough to seal the gap. It doesnt interfere with opening and closing the window. Also, its been 9 months since i installed all 12 windows at my place. So far it has hold up against 4 hail storms, many T-storm warning, heavy rains and the crazy snow storm in Oklahoma. It still close and open as smooth as before, no water leaks, and no drafts. :)
Hey fella. nice job on your window. I am a window installer by trade and you did a fine job for your first try. I would recommend screwing the top screws first so it won't fall out of the hole. Also if you put your top screws in vertically you can adjust the level of your window by either tightening or loosening the left and right side screws to either raise or lower each side independently. Just saves you wrestling with it when you're by yourself. Good luck with the next ones
thx, thats really encouraging. I did the easier windows, and I will let a window professional do the harder ones (e.g. Large ones with cement around them). It was a fun experience, and saved a little. I also got $1120 back from 2009 taxes.
Well done, thanks for sharing the videio. I am amazed though at the rude, sarcastic remarks that have been posted. Constructive criticism is fine but the negative comments I have read here is just plain BS.
i saw you first tried to screw window upside down-yob also could have removed sashes out from the inside without removing the glass or saw z alling them.i could have done the whole job in 30 minutes-VINYL-LITE WINDOW FACTORY VA.
yes, you are right.i thought i replaced that part of the video. But i guess i didnt. thanks for pointing it out. ill add a comment on that time frame.

You obviously are not a profesional. Why didnt you use the nail flange? Were did you get that "vapor barrier" material, is it a Hefty lawn bag or what? People like you that have no business doing what your doing, but do it anyways. You end up with an improper installation, window leaks etc. basiclally a bigger propblem than you had before you started. The tax credit should be reserved for "profesional installation" not butchers like yourself. FYI paint doesnt stick to silicone you idiot.
Good questions. Nail flanges are used for new installs, this is for replacements. But i see your idea using nail flanges. The silicon i used was painters caulk. The vapor barrier was 8 mil polyethylene sheeting. I dont have much money, and not everyone can hire professionals.
This video can show others what not to do. So, thx for your comments.
No he is not a professional but he probably did just a good of a job. 95% of the "professionals" out there would have cut corners that will eventually result in the need for repairs within 5-10 years.
He did it himself and a very good job he did.
BTW the tax credit is there to help those who otherwise could not afford to make there home better. This 1 window would have cost him about $600 for a professional to do, he saved about $400.00.

Nice to see real people just going for it. Seems like it's almost illegal to work on your own house these days.

Thanks so much. I've been agonizing over replacing a few windows. All other info I found made it too simple or too overcomplicated.

Nice video. We could have made your step 5, 3:54 the difficult stage, much much easier with our "X-tractor" tool. Take a look at our video. Nice job!
