What the hell was wrong with Martin Landau? He did not present with the award until she was done with her speech. Makes no sense. But she deserved to win, looked lovely, and is a wonderful actress who unfortunately has fallen under the supporting actress curse, for we rarely see her in anything anymore. Her father's emotion was a great Oscar moment.
That was a great moment. Especially Paul crying. Too bad the next year, her parents didn't come to the Oscars with her, but I guess they didn't have to.
Length and Continuity-wise, this is probably the best acceptance speech of all time. She is to the point, eloquent, and heartfelt. AND a great talent.
I hate when people complain about her winning the Oscar. I think it was well-deserved for sure. This win is similar to Marisa Tomei's for "My Cousin Vinny." Both are these very bold comedic roles that really stole the film. For sure dramatic roles are all about really embodying the character, having your face be expressive, and being believable. But a comedic role is just as challenging. You really have to understand the humor, have great timing, and yet be three-dimensional. She was all of this
To be the person talking about fashion... I'l be guilty. Her hair... I can't... She is never mentioned as being a fashion legend for the Oscars... and I think that's unacceptable. Every bit of hair was structured perfectly. Her jewelry, her make-up, her gown... Whoever styled her... wow.
That was so honest and beautiful.. we could see that true emotions come out there. All that talk about actors doing their bit on stage proved wrong. Mira Sorvino was so beautifully humble, gentle and sweet on stage, especially when she thanked her parents. Very touching speech!!
Paul Sorvino is fantastic, his daughter is as well. But, Miss Mia, you are also one lucky woman! Just two years later, you got to play alongside Chow Yun Fat, my favorite actor! Just shows how talented you are.
I would honor my Italion Father the same way-I'm adopted and still know that there will never be a better Dad or Grandpa. To watch this makes me hope I can make my Dad this proud. Mira's Dad will remember this forever.
Mira Sorvino is the definition of an underrated A-class talent. Her most recent posthumous role is for when she did an episode on House. Even yet, it was still little known.
Ha! I think the guy sitting behind Mare Winnigham thought her name was being announced for a fraction of a second. It's like he's about to grab her, and then pulls back when he hears the rest of the name.
I think Joan Allen should have won this year, I like Sorvino but I felt Allen truly was Pat Nixon and made her sympathetic.
But I do like that Sorvino was recognized for comedy which is rare to see, I would have put Kate Winslet 2nd to Allen that year but I think we all knew she was destined for more and she did!
this acceptance speech is probaly one of my favorites. Yes!, she's one of my favorite actresses, but the way it came across seemed so real... I love that she thanks her parents, her friends, and the way she added her personal feelings about acting towards the end. You never see that anymore.
I wonder how Winslet's career would have went if she had won that year. She could have won. She did win the Sag & the Bafta for it. Though she didnt win her she definitely should have won for Titanic.
I'm the first person to comment on this post. Mira Sorvino's performance in Mighty Aphrodite was Oscar worthy and I'm so glad that she won. Mira is one of my favorite actresses. Seeing her dad Paul Sorvino get emotional was touching because to me, he is still Paulie from GOODFELLAS.
awww that was such a touching speech, esp when they showed her parents and when she thanked her father was sooo emotional and inspiring!! Btw, i think she walked on the wrong side of the podium when she got up there because martin landau was actually waiting for her until she finished her speech to give her her oscar
Unlike one self proclaimed acting expert here in youtube who shall remain nameless, I think she deserved it, and the way the statuette being handed after the speech looks so rehearsed I feel like watching Oscars ceremony from 50's or 60's
I love this clip because most "Hollywood types" try to act cool or blasé, but Paul Sorvino just blubbered. Awesome. Proud Papa.

Martin Landau...what a bloody LEGEND!
As are Joan Allen, and Kate Winslet, but Mira
deserved this win and it brings tears to me eyes
watching her Dad get so emotional over her win
especially since he is such a well known character
performer for so many years. Cheers to them! = ]

Kathleen Quinlan did not deserve a nomination for "Apollo 13." What about Judy Parfitt from "Dolores Claiborne" in her spot?

@soaphunks You're right, "Apollo 13" was pretty silly and her performance lackluster. She was definitely the odd-one-out on that list.
