I thought everyone spins when they are a kid? I used to do it sometimes, it was fun, but I am not autistic? should we be careful not to misdiagnose and label too quickly?
For information on the bases of many nonverbal learning disorders (common in Asperger's), in addition to audiological disorders such as Autism (toward end of talk) search "Dr. Laurie Cestnick" and "harvard university" on youtube for a video. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!
Children under 2 years old are very sensitive to their mother's/parents subconscious state. They pick up any stress, material desire, pride, fear and etc. from their mom. What are the consequences? Autism, depression, violence and etc later on. Change within, your inner impression of the world, accept self forgiveness, love and your children will get better. And stop vaccines before they are 2 years old. the immune system is still developing-let it take its natural course...!
Oh man! That takes me back to the good ol' days. Ain't nothing like getting high on a good spin!!! I miss being able to freely do that when I was a kid.
AUTISM IS CAUSED BY CHILDHOOD VACCINE PROGRAMS ...FACT ! WAKE UP PARENTS AND STOP VACCINATING YOUR CHILDREN ! YOUR CHILD IS FAR BETTER OFF NOT BEING VACCINATED... FACT.!.....THEY WILL CREATE NATURAL IMMUNITIES WHICH ARE FAR STRONGER AND LONG LASTING......IF YOU ARE HELL BENT ON VACCINATING DO IT WHEN THE CHILD IS 4 YEARS OLD OR EVEN 2 DO SOME RESEARCH AND SAVE A CHILD A LIFE LONG AFFLICTION ....GET A CLUE SHEEP ! WAKE UP AMERICA AND START DOING SOME FUKIN RESEARCH !!!
Take your child to a good chiropractor they are the only doctors who work directly with the nervous system everyone else teaches you how to cope. We have seen tremendous improvements
My twins have mild Autism, both girls and THEY don't like to spin but they both like to spin OTHER things, one moreso than the other. The vax issue does not apply to them as neither has been vax'd at all, don't believe in it so we are going to try detoxing of heavy metals, right now we are doing supplementation, lots of EFA's for brain function....they did NOT have enlarged heads in their first year either. Apparently a sign?? They are 3 now.
I was told to wait until they're 5 to detox and evaluate at that point. If they show marked improvement by then I'm hoping to NOT have to detox, we've been introduced to some new therapies that we can do at home to calm their nervous system and help them function. The supplementing is working well though, I will say that; not solid on the detox yet; what risks have you heard about???

sje just having funnnnn let her spin, flap her hands i believe we all did that when we were little, i guess when u see a child sitting all day, then i guess thats what you call a normal child? so sad, what has the world become for every little thing theres something wrong from spinning, am i wrong?
All children will display a symptom or two of autism during their development. However, multiple symptoms are needed for a child to be considered autistic.
I am comforted that people see the normalcy in autism. Jade isn't that different than other 6 yr olds.
And yes, it is sad that the world would find something wrong with a child who is gleefully spinning.
I remember the first time my son started spinning like that. I thought there was something seriously wrong with his equilibrium or something because he kept doing it, even after he'd fall over. Then lots of other signs started to emerge and it all made sense. Your daughter is precious.
I'm so sorry to hear this. Just know there are therapies that can greatly help or even reverse this. I hope she fully recovers. Best to you and your daughter.
Her bowel function also became horrendous. Often she had undigested foods in her stools, and painful gas all day long. Her immune system was shot. She had giardia and candida overgrowth in her intestines.
Jade also had stopped growing for 14 months after the reaction. MRI discovered pituitary damage, likely caused by encephalitis.
Jade has come a long way, is on IVIG to treat her immune system, is growing again, is in a HFA kindergarten classroom, and mainstreamed 25% of the day.
@aware4autism Is there anything good about her? like maybe humans are evolving and she is a sign of change. you should be blessed, and not worry so much. There are kids nowadays who can see without their eyes, they can see out of their ears. This wasn't possible in the 17th century. The world is changing, accept that autism is not a purely medical condition. Even our DNA is changing, that scientists can not explain without delving in to the esoteric territory.
You mentioned she regressed at 18 months. Do you know what happened at this time? Did you do vaccinations at this time? Just wondering. Did you notice delays in her speech?
Jade has primary immunodeficiency, and should have never had any live virus vaccines such as the MMR or Varicella. At 17 months, she had both of these vaccines, and 3 weeks later awoke covered in a target shaped rash, seizing, with a 105 fever.
Before this event Jade had fairly typical development and growth, although she only had three words. Afterwards she regressed, lost eye contact, started repetitive behavior, and stopped smiling. She was also having petit mal seizures atleast 10x a day.
I'm pretty sure if the parent put this is a sign of autism that her daughter has been diagnosed. the snesation of spinning for a person without autism and the snesation of it for a person with autism is completely differnet. one of the children I work with can spin on the tire swing, and I mean SPIN, going as fast as I can make it go and for 10 minutes straight if I let him, and he does not get dizzy or get sick. It just calms him down.
I really enjoyed all of your video's. Well I don't know if enjoyed is the right word but I could relate to all of them. I have 3 sons with lower functionoing Autism. I look back now at some of the videos I have and see signs so clearly, back then I had no idea what Autism was, now it is my life. Anyhow great job showing parents the early signs, I think it's great what your doing!!
Thanks for your videos, you have an adorable girl there. My daughter is 3 and is about to start early intervention. The IED team said she may have autism but as her speech is so delayed they cannot tell for sure and want her speech developed first. I wish i had found these videos earlier. Keep it up and i wish you the best.
my son is Autistic and is always turning the tv on and off repeated.y....that may be a reason why.....also in addition to spinning around himself, he likes to spin objects over and over again......

My, now 4 year old, daughter was a spinner. I had no idea at the time, thought she was quirky. You hear about hand flapping and toe walking. Im glad you're getting the word out.
my brother and i used to spin till we were sick! lol we used to stare at the ground and do it for hours. neither of us are autistic, but very high iq and a little eccentric :) my kids spin and yes one is high functioning aspie (140 iq) and my other one has significant hearing loss and speech delay. she is going to be assessed in february, but has to have surgery first. so far she looks the same as her sister with more social abilities..
Just wanted to note that although spinning can certainly be a sign of autism, not all spinners are autistic. Both of my children were spinners, my son was a "head banger," and he stood on his tippy toes a lot. :) My children are not autistic and currently exhibit no traits of autism at ages 3 and 5, other than some minor sensory issues (they don't like tags in clothes or lines on socks).
my son used to spin, jump up and down and walk on tip-toes when he was young. He didn't have an eye contact and never smiled as a baby. He used to line his cars on the floor and god help them if anyhone disrupted the line. The doctiors said he's a 'grumpy baby' and would 'grow out of it'. He's 8 now and was diagnosed with Autistic traits. Doctors know NOTHING about Autism.
let us be honest here..wich one of us didnt like spinning when he was little?
i think you guys has became paranoid and soon you ll be saying if you play with sticks in your backyard when you were a kido you most be autistic too.
it's good to try to discover the syntoms of autism at early stages but dont let your fear overcome you people for godsake let kids have fun the way they see fun and stop inventing new syntoms from your own.
Things I use to do as a kid that drove my mom nuts (keeping in mind autism wasnt "out in the open"), besides spinning, having to keep a constant beat with my body and grinding my teeth, was to make gurgling noises with my mouth. Once again, for me, it was and is a way to let my brain know I am alive and kicking, even if my brain feels lost/jumbled.
My son is 4 but I am pretty much sure he is autistic. He just recently (6 mos or so?) has done the hand flapping. He has always spun around in circles, but Iknow plenty of kids that do that anyways.
he also grinds his teeth a lot, which i didnt know was a sign of autism.
My son had signs of autism but they said it didn't seem to be a worry. I didn't realize teeth grinding was a sign though. He grinds his teeth in his sleep, so bad that we are going to have to take him in because he has worn a baby tooth flush with his gums and it broke in half when it came out. They're worried his jaws won't close right without a device in his mouth. I am questioning my youngest son and have posted videos of his behaviors asking opinions. My daughter shows no signs whatsoever.
Jade would grind her teeth, it is called a "stim" or "stimulatory behavior". What really helped for her, was 2 cups of epsom salt in the bath. It is supposed to be a natural muscle relaxant. She used to do it ALL day long, now it is only when she is really concentrating on something.
i don't kno much about autism, but don't all children flap their arms and spin and such when they are little? i mean how can u really tell at such a young age by just those movements?
you can't tell just by one sign. It is true that all children will display a sign or two of autism, but when a child displays MULTIPLE signs, it is better to err on the side of caution, and have an evaluation. Early intervention is still the greatest thing you can do to help an autistic child progress, and perhaps be independent as an adult.
I did this all the time when I was little. I still do. :) Especially at bus stops and before school starts in the morning. Sometimes it's because I'm stressed, other times it's just plain fun!
And just because someone is autistic doesn't mean they're not having fun (to people who say she's just having fun). I have a lot of fun, whether rocking in a corner or writing online or socializing with friends. Speech is difficult, but I do use it, though sometimes it just takes too much energy.
my son has pdd which falls in the autism spectrum. yet at 4 yrs old he sounds like a little proffessor. he's ped thinks he may be developing into Asperger's syndrome. highly intelligent with excellent verbal skills. Yet some social dysfunction. but the signs of biting, finger flapping and non stop spinning are still there. much props to those parents who support and educate themselves to help their young.
my brother has autism and he pretty much spends his time playing by grinding his teeth at people and jumping around, I think that my brothers energy is stronger then mosts kids, he just cant stay still
This is just ONE sign of autism. ALL kids will display a sign or two of autism at some point. Red flags are raised when a child shows MANY signs of autism.
first off, autism is NOT the same as retarded. I cannot believe you would insult my daughter in such a way. secondly, spinning is just ONE sign of autism. ALL kids will display a sign or two of autism at some point. Red flags are raised when a child shows MANY signs of autism.
well, I didn't buy what the docs said at 1st, but when she was diagnosed by a doc with the CDC, well, needless to say, I think the docs are right.
as for the signs, yes, the signs of autism are common in typically developing children, but when a child exhibits NUMEROUS signs, it is better to intervene than say "wait til they are 5"
Every one has some Autistic behaviours. Autism occurs when an individual Exhibits so many Autistic behaviours that it interferes with their ability to achieve normally developing social, behavioural, communicative & learning abilities. It is vital to start intervention as early as possible. If your child shows some symptoms get them checked.
Thank you so much for sharing such important information. We're on the final steps of a diagnosis, but I'm more and more convinced my son has HFA. He'll be starting early intervention soon, and knowing there are so many parents out there who are on this road together is an amazing and strengthening support!
As for people talking about Neurotypicals doing it, yes sure they do, but it's a question of frequency and intensity. Also of the situation. As the mom posted Jade does this if she is overstimulated (as does my daughter). It's a coping mechanism for sensory issues. If a child does this to calm down or work through something, that is when you can suspect it's not just neurotypical playing.
My son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS.I know how you feel it breaks my heart when I see my son do this, on top of the MANY things he does. I love the people who share their stories it is really helpful! For those people who question us, they don't understand. Our children do these things over and over again. When a child wets themselves we do not just jump the gun and say wow you are a wetter, we say you had an accident,it happens, but if it continues we all know there is a problem.
yes, alot of non autistic kids line things up, and don't always make eye contact. One or two "signs" do not mean a child is autistic, but if a child displays multiple signs, it is a good idea to have them screened for autism.
I dont know much about Autism, but from the videos I've watched so far, it seems that all the things kids normally do such as stacking blocks, spinning in circles, hand flapping and things of that sort, seem to be early indicators. At what point do u make a deciion that that something just isnt right?
Thank you very much for sharing these videos. I think familiarity will help people be more kind and tolerant toward autistic people. Also, I get angry that people with regular children call any little quirk 'autistic'. I want those people to see what autism really looks like so they'll be less likely to misapply the term.
I've never heard that spinning was a sign of autism. Neurotypicals do that too. Flapping and rocking are more of an autistic trait. When I was younger, I used to flap my arms like a bird. I consciously stopped most of the symptoms after I was diagnosed.
The difference is flapping and rocking are traits. This is an early sign. Children with autism do not necessarily display the same signs as older children, teens, or adults.
Before Jade was diagnosed, everything I read about autism did not sound like Jade then, as they described older children, for months I said it didn't sound like her, until I found the early signs. Jade was dx'd at 22 mos, in 2005.
I found this one funny cause I used to do this very often when I was a teenager, my brother used to point it out and mention it alot. I used to just think "who cares?"
Im an autism savant, instead of lightening fast mental calculations, for me its lightening fast creativity. I am looking to meet others who are the same.
the difference is that ppl with autism do it to for a sensory reason, and they will do it and keep doing it and you cant interrupt them. non-austistic kids do it just because its fun.
"neurotypicals" do it for sensory reasons too... I just dont like the "this is what auistic ppl do" label... I work with kids every day, some like to spin others avoid it like crazy, some kids on the spectrum spin, (a few to the point of disruption of other things) others arent interested... I think the more important piece that is common to people with autism is that they have focused interests (I dont like the word stim either) that get in the way of learning other things.
otalison: very good and important point.. everyone's on the autism spectrum! i try to impress that on people when i hear "autistic" vs. "non-autistic."we all self-stimulate, self-soothe, feel socially isolated, overwhelmed by sensory information, etc.we're all autistic, but the issue is whether or not our tendencies are socially impairing.
Oh my gosh.. my son does that too. he was just dagnosed on thursday. I know this is weird, but I feel a little more normal seeing this video. Does she look to the side when she spins? My Colin does.
I noticed you asked if Jade looks to the side and my daughter Addison (26 months) spins and when she does she does look to the side as if to try to stay focused before she get all the way around. kinda funny.she loves it! we only let her spin a few time around. If we do not stop her she gets going to fast and will spin out of control.. fine at home but not at Walmart! ha
... BUT are they not the cutiest kids....our little ones! That Jade is a doll!!
aww, thank Michelle. I learned really fast from Jade and her awsome mommy that the things that colin was doing is normal with autism. :o) I do love Jade, she has taught me so much. Our kids are such mysteries. I feel blessed everday to wake up and get the chance to really shape my sons life.
I still jerk qerk and blink whenever i'm overstimulated, gag too at times, just bleh! (yes I'm autistic) But heck, that's not bad really, wouldn't it be worse if she screamed at the top of her lungs or something?
she also flaps her arms in the is video, along with the rapid head movements to avoid eye contact. Also a sign of autism. Blessings to your family. You are not alone in the struggle.

Wow! Thank you for posting these videos...
My son is 4 but I am pretty much sure he is autistic. He just recently (6 mos or so?) has done the hand flapping. He has always spun around in circles, but Iknow plenty of kids that do that anyways.
he also grinds his teeth a lot, which i didnt know was a sign of autism.
he has his intake eval on friday!
erinrae7star 3 years ago 2
My son had signs of autism but they said it didn't seem to be a worry. I didn't realize teeth grinding was a sign though. He grinds his teeth in his sleep, so bad that we are going to have to take him in because he has worn a baby tooth flush with his gums and it broke in half when it came out. They're worried his jaws won't close right without a device in his mouth. I am questioning my youngest son and have posted videos of his behaviors asking opinions. My daughter shows no signs whatsoever.
isthisautism 3 years ago
Jade would grind her teeth, it is called a "stim" or "stimulatory behavior". What really helped for her, was 2 cups of epsom salt in the bath. It is supposed to be a natural muscle relaxant. She used to do it ALL day long, now it is only when she is really concentrating on something.

i don't kno much about autism, but don't all children flap their arms and spin and such when they are little? i mean how can u really tell at such a young age by just those movements?
tonia711 3 years ago
you can't tell just by one sign. It is true that all children will display a sign or two of autism, but when a child displays MULTIPLE signs, it is better to err on the side of caution, and have an evaluation. Early intervention is still the greatest thing you can do to help an autistic child progress, and perhaps be independent as an adult.

my sister is autistic
thehappybunny22 3 years ago
I did this all the time when I was little. I still do. :) Especially at bus stops and before school starts in the morning. Sometimes it's because I'm stressed, other times it's just plain fun!
And just because someone is autistic doesn't mean they're not having fun (to people who say she's just having fun). I have a lot of fun, whether rocking in a corner or writing online or socializing with friends. Speech is difficult, but I do use it, though sometimes it just takes too much energy.
AuRatio 3 years ago
i remember doing this when i was little. i never could figure out why i always fell lol. but i got a diagnoses of autism so now i understand.

my son has pdd which falls in the autism spectrum. yet at 4 yrs old he sounds like a little proffessor. he's ped thinks he may be developing into Asperger's syndrome. highly intelligent with excellent verbal skills.

She's havinf fun!!!!! Toddlers like to spin! My 18 month old does that but I know she is playing COme ON!!!!!!!!!!!!11

This is just ONE sign of autism. ALL kids will display a sign or two of autism at some point. Red flags are raised when a child shows MANY signs of autism.
aware4autism 4 years ago
btw, a child can be having fun while displaying sings of autism, check out Jade reading when she was 2...

ummm... so just because she spins around and stuff that means she's retarded? maybe shes playing?
phantastickyle 4 years ago
first off, autism is NOT the same as retarded. I cannot believe you would insult my daughter in such a way. secondly, spinning is just ONE sign of autism. ALL kids will display a sign or two of autism at some point. Red flags are raised when a child shows MANY signs of autism.
aware4autism 4 years ago
That is so rude....How dare you insult a child with Autism. Educate yourself before you speak.....

Is everything a sign for autism? Like say, if I wanted to go for a walk on a nice sunny day, does that mean I probably have autism?
Just saying, don't buy into everything docs tell ya.
XiOctaneX 4 years ago
well, I didn't buy what the docs said at 1st, but when she was diagnosed by a doc with the CDC, well, needless to say, I think the docs are right.
as for the signs, yes, the signs of autism are common in typically developing children, but when a child exhibits NUMEROUS signs, it is better to intervene than say "wait til they are 5"
aware4autism 4 years ago
Every one has some Autistic behaviours. Autism occurs when an individual Exhibits so many Autistic behaviours that it interferes with their ability to achieve normally developing social, behavioural, communicative & learning abilities. It is vital to start intervention as early as possible. If your child shows some symptoms get them checked.
nigra74 4 years ago
Thank you so much for sharing such important information. We're on the final steps of a diagnosis, but I'm more and more convinced my son has HFA. He'll be starting early intervention soon, and knowing there are so many parents out there who are on this road together is an amazing and strengthening support!
riomuse 4 years ago
Yep, my little girl is a spinner too! :-)

When a child wets themselves we do not just jump the gun and say wow you are a wetter, we say you had an accident,it happens, but if it continues we all know there is a problem.

a sign of autism? alot of kids at a young age like this spin
xs0nnym00re 4 years ago
yes, alot of non autistic kids line things up, and don't always make eye contact. One or two "signs" do not mean a child is autistic, but if a child displays multiple signs, it is a good idea to have them screened for autism.
aware4autism 4 years ago
I dont know much about Autism, but from the videos I've watched so far, it seems that all the things kids normally do such as stacking blocks, spinning in circles, hand flapping and things of that sort, seem to be early indicators. At what point do u make a deciion that that something just isnt right?
oosh79 4 years ago
Thank you very much for sharing these videos. I think familiarity will help people be more kind and tolerant toward autistic people. Also, I get angry that people with regular children call any little quirk 'autistic'. I want those people to see what autism really looks like so they'll be less likely to misapply the term.

I've never heard that spinning was a sign of autism. Neurotypicals do that too. Flapping and rocking are more of an autistic trait. When I was younger, I used to flap my arms like a bird. I consciously stopped most of the symptoms after I was diagnosed.
n4mwd 4 years ago
The difference is flapping and rocking are traits. This is an early sign. Children with autism do not necessarily display the same signs as older children, teens, or adults.
Before Jade was diagnosed, everything I read about autism did not sound like Jade then, as they described older children, for months I said it didn't sound like her, until I found the early signs. Jade was dx'd at 22 mos, in 2005.
aware4autism 4 years ago
I found this one funny cause I used to do this very often when I was a teenager, my brother used to point it out and mention it alot. I used to just think "who cares?"

Im an autism savant, instead of lightening fast mental calculations, for me its lightening fast creativity. I am looking to meet others who are the same.

mr bro did it he never falls and he doesnt stop he probably does it to the light
speakeridiot 4 years ago
most kids practice spinning to some extent, I can rememeber my brother and I doing this until we fell over and over (as well as rolling down a hill)
otalison 4 years ago
the difference is that ppl with autism do it to for a sensory reason, and they will do it and keep doing it and you cant interrupt them. non-austistic kids do it just because its fun.
ashypashyg 4 years ago
"neurotypicals" do it for sensory reasons too... I just dont like the "this is what auistic ppl do" label... I work with kids every day, some like to spin others avoid it like crazy, some kids on the spectrum spin, (a few to the point of disruption of other things) others arent interested... I think the more important piece that is common to people with autism is that they have focused interests (I dont like the word stim either) that get in the way of learning other things.
otalison 4 years ago
otalison: very good and important point.. everyone's on the autism spectrum! i try to impress that on people when i hear "autistic" vs. "non-autistic."we all self-stimulate, self-soothe, feel socially isolated, overwhelmed by sensory information, etc.we're all autistic, but the issue is whether or not our tendencies are socially impairing.
sneech2 4 years ago 2
Oh my gosh.. my son does that too. he was just dagnosed on thursday. I know this is weird, but I feel a little more normal seeing this video. Does she look to the side when she spins? My Colin does.
cedarmcox 4 years ago
I noticed you asked if Jade looks to the side and my daughter Addison (26 months) spins and when she does she does look to the side as if to try to stay focused before she get all the way around. kinda funny.she loves it! we only let her spin a few time around. If we do not stop her she gets going to fast and will spin out of control.. fine at home but not at Walmart! ha
... BUT are they not the cutiest kids....our little ones! That Jade is a doll!!
Michelle
tex23fe 4 years ago
aww, thank Michelle. I learned really fast from Jade and her awsome mommy that the things that colin was doing is normal with autism. :o) I do love Jade, she has taught me so much. Our kids are such mysteries. I feel blessed everday to wake up and get the chance to really shape my sons life.
cedarmcox 4 years ago
I still jerk qerk and blink whenever i'm overstimulated, gag too at times, just bleh! (yes I'm autistic) But heck, that's not bad really, wouldn't it be worse if she screamed at the top of her lungs or something?
Alaskaslim 5 years ago
It's typical for autistics to start behaving more autistic (hand flapping, spinning) when they're overstimulated.

she is a gorgeous girl. best of luck, she is gonna be a champion
henrylordskowalski 5 years ago
she also flaps her arms in the is video, along with the rapid head movements to avoid eye contact. Also a sign of autism. Blessings to your family. You are not alone in the struggle.

My son with autism used to do the same thing- but he NEVER fell. It was weird. Hope your daughter is doing better everyday.
