Hi! I love your animations and your guides are really helpful, so I have a question, what would a hexapodal walk or run be like? Not like a bug, but more like those creatures from Avatar. How they walk the front legs move the same together, but I think it would be more realistic if they didn't move exactly the same. More like one or two steps difference. Sorry to bug you, just wondering how you think a hexapod walk would look like. Thanks :)
Actually, 4-legged animals dont always step in that pattern- it's better to pay attention to an animals gait pattern instead of go by a "basic" pattern as you have suggested. The pattern they step in is highly dependant on the structure AND length of the legs. A horses (shorter legged unguligrade) walking gait is a different pattern than dog's (shorter legged digitigrade) which are both different from a giraffe (long legged unguligrade) and maned wolf (long legged digitigrade).
Thats what my high-speed reference videos are for =p. For most 4 legged animals like this, the gait is different as you say (Giraffe and zebra examples in my high-speed reference for comparison as well as dogs in another video) and the key frames would have to be modified depending on the animal. But the order in which their legs step is always the same because thats the most efficient for these types of animals. I always stress that prior research is important.
If you study the movement of cats and apply this technique it should be ok. I use horse like movement as an example that isn't meant to be copied but to show how it works. A walk cycle guide of a cat would be exactly the same, just visually different.
I have reference for cats on my channel in my high speed videos playlist, hope these help.
When running, yes and its covered in my run guide. When walking, it depends on the character- their general anatomy and flexibility, laziness of the movement and its focus on a target area. Such variables are one of the main reasons why the head was left out.
Yeah, umm... I've been poking my cat for the past hour trying to make him move so I can use him for a subject, and all he does is roll over and meow at me like 'what da heck are u doin, hoomun?' And I can't ue my dog because he got sick a while ago so he walks kind of funny now. ;n; My doggy handicapped.
As i said to another user, it would be better for you to reference the real animal that you want. I intentionally use fictional animals so that its unsuitable for proper reference. What i wanted to get across is an example of the planning method i use for these animations and highlight details that should be taken into account, not create a copiable "templete."
Errr... maybe because its meant to be a horse perhaps? =p Sorry, the sketch was meant to be a hippogryph because i always had a hippogryph like character in my other guides.
As i state in the description, it is the movement of horses that i've used because (Supposedly) its meant to be more difficult =p
Thank you, this helps me so much, all of your tutorials help me actually!! ^^ Hopefully someday, I'll beable to figure out certain animations my self instead of using other really awesome animators as my crutch..|D
Nicely done! I'm an animation major myself and it's heartening to see a fellow Youtuber putting out competent, correct tutorials instead of the "DRAW WULF RUNNIN" like most of them see to be. Excellent advise.
Good for you! I graduated a year ago in animation and most of my advice comes from what i learnt there. Hopefully, this and some of my other tutorial videos might help you on your course eh?
@DarkmaneTheWerewolf Oh definitely, I just wish I'd found them sooner; my final last year had a shot of a character running with some camera movement and I stumbled over it quite a bit. But hey, now I have a resource lol.
This is amazing <3 Thanks! How do you make animations so fast? I find that it takes me a full day just to create a simple walk, let alone an anatomically correct one!
Lots of drawing practice. When at uni, they had an excercise where you had to draw a figure in just a few seconds! I may be able to belt out an animation like this in a few hours but it took years of practice to get to this point eh =p Even so, you can see the warping on the front view since it was pretty rushed.
Aww... dang, the idea was to help make thing simpler! Just have a go! As i say, work on those 4 key frames and the rest of the frames should flow a bit better since you know where you're going with each one!
@DarkmaneTheWerewolf I wasn't blaming your tutorials, no, sorry. XD Their fantastic and they do make things a hell of a lot easier. It's just that, for example, for a ball bounce animation. Its not just moving a ball across the screen, you have to think about squashes and stretches. So instead of a walking animal, you have to think about the hip/shoulder movements. If I do it often enough, I'll soon get into the habit. That's what art is all about. :) Sorry for making you fret XD.
Heh, i see, no worries then =p It wouldnt be a good tutorial if it didnt explain all the nessessary aspects but at the same time, i dont want to put people off from the amount of stuff they need to remember.
Lots of research into various animals similar to the type of dragons i want and horses for... horses =p But i have been thinking of doing a recording of exactly how i animate on computer and for reals. =p
you helped SplashkittyArtist get the 4 legged walk cycle right on one of her videos!!!

This expresses the importance of researching the animal you want to apply this method to.
