Thx for posting! I watched this edition of Spectacle and was totally blown away by Neko, and this song. Between this and the Harry Nilsson song, she was brilliant. Elvis and Steve Nieve's accompaniment is sensational.
Neko is number 1 strongest influence on me musically than anyone else! I've loved her since I saw her open with Nick Cave in 2001 at the mpls. theater! And Screw those blonde bitches that were making fun of her, before I even saw her perform, I knew I was going to like her because of these nay saying a few rows behind me! I love you NEKO! And just to explain obvious weirdness with my youtube name. My name is Nicolle. Tho, I am a big fan, I am NOT a cyber-stalker. lol
i think she drew inspiration from being on tour constantly and the prison work crews that often work as sanitation for festivals. but the fact that she makes it sounds so haunting it truly inspired.
She does a pitch-perfect rendition and I'm glad to hear such good sound in a live video. It's interesting to hear it with EC's interpretation. Usually Neko keeps the instruments reigned in. I like it.
Love Neko, she is the real deal...what a great song and performance. I still remember Neko announcing at the practice pad in the storage place on Richards Street in Vancouver that she was gonna do country music...boy did she ever show us!
I'm always a little amused at myself when I try to "Like" a video, and the number doesn't increase, meaning, I probably already "Liked" it at some point. I just /really/ like it.
Interesting to see one of the coolest Americana/Roots chicks, Neko Case, with the most uninteresting lame wanna-be one, Sheryl Crow, on the same stage. Yes Sheryl you can go home and count all of your money and Grammys but you'll NEVER be an artist of Neko Case's magnitude. Neko Case has the best Country voice since Patsy Cline or Brenda Lee, hands down.
I've been a folk and alternative music fan for almost fifty years, and dare I say it? I rate Neko with Dylan, Guthry, and Seeger. Her lyrics are sometimes haunting, and always thought-out, and poignant. She is socially conscious but never sappy. Some of her arrangements, including this one, rival those of the Beatles. I love the harmonies she uses-many times as much as Neko's singing. Neko you have added significant joy to my life.
@ehairgrove Good comment. As an old-timer myself I can appreciate the gravity of your opinion. I don't think I've ever heard a bad word about her song-writing, singing or professionalism. One reviewer did bemoan the fact that many of her newer songs are too short, but he probably is like me in that he just wants to songs to never end.
Spring of 1981 I was dragged to the Northrup auditorium to see El and the Attractions. No idea who they were. Left that night dumbfounded...and asking who was that madman on keys? Steve Nieve......That name I've always remembered.
"My cheek is frozen to the floor" . "Prison girls are not impressed, they're the ones who have to clean this mess." Sounds to me like she dies and the girls have to tidy up after her. This is like my 31st viewing .
I think about 10 of the current 584 views of this clip are mine. Time stops whenever I see it, I mean, this is a great performance. Thanks for uploading it!
@anleja about 20 of the veiws are mine. I watched this episode on The Sundance channel with closed caption so I could read along while she sang. What a depressing song. I think she kills herslef and the prison girls have to clean up after her. This is the very best version. I want this for my Ipod.I also like Jesse Sexsmith's version of Everyday I write the book, accompanied by E,C. himself on this same episode of Spectacle.
@dcarr84 Haha, I think I am at about 20 views at this point a week later. I've read the lyrics and while the meaning is not very obvious, I think you have an interesting interpretation, it does kind of sound like dying, as if she is herself so insignificant that the greatest impact she could make on anyone is giving them irritation if she were to kill herself. Her lyrics are so ambiguous, one of the reasons I love them so much.
@dcarr84 An interesting interpretation and I have a feeling your right, or very close. I also know that she's a movie buff and I've always wondered if she's singing about those great B-movies from the 50's and 60's about prison girls. They usually had dark lighting with long shadows cast by single light bulbs and the girls had dark, sexy eye shadow makeup.
thanks for uploading this, i really wanted to see it, and it didn't dissappoint. awesome stuff, beautiful lyrics, great arrangement, Neko is magnificent!
Glorious.
