  • "WHERE?"

  • He looks like a burn victim

  • @icoulman the clue is in the name, bass GUITAR. Idiot

  • @30006714 The "idiot" you refer to in the video is Graham Maby, the bass player, who sang the backup on the record and who has been playing and singing this song for years with Joe Jackson. Your comment said "guitar" not "bass guitar." Finally, you seem to have a problem calling everyone an "idiot." You might want to limit that to yourself.

  • Not my genre of music. But it sure took me back to 5th grade. Deja Vu.. Good tune Joe.

  • Easily one of the best examples of late 70s/early 80s rock songs...This song always takes me back to about 1980 and it hasn't lost a step in 33 years. Fast forward to the late 80s and every time one of my ex-girlfriends showed up at a party with a new guy and I'd hear this song in the back of my head :) Good times!

  • i love how his voice never changed :D

  • It seems to me the guy has had plastic surgery...lol

  • @spritualdiary lol knob

  • Why do girls go for bad guy, loser types :( this is there song

  • Heard this on the radio on the way to work this morning!!!! there is a God .....

  • Love it!!!This was when times were good!!!!

  • Should stick to guitar

  • @30006714 He's playing bass, not a guitar, and the backing vocal is spot on.

  • The idiot on backin vocals cant sing. Kinda spoils it

  • NGC-2999 (SRD)

    Q ^1043

  • 1:31 HE'S PHASING OUT OF THE DIMENSION!

  • 1:24 WTF

  • i love this song. they should make more of these songs

  • Beauty and the Geek...

  • Classic takes me back.

  • is she really going out with him? i ask myself this every day!

  • God damn, he's tall!

  • Great tune

  • Joe, always the reluctant pop icon. He was amazing, but it just didn't sit right with him all that teenage holler and fuss. Love you Joe.

  • this song basically sums up what pops into my head every day

  • This guy was ahead of his time when he made this song. He was underrated. Great song!

  • 0:31

he about loses it with a laugh!! I think his voice has really held up unlike alot of singers of past!

  • Joe I love your music but when you have a little time get some sun

  • EVERY time i c jade and moy walk down the street this song plays in my head and i just cant help but to let out a sigh... FML

  • How true is this song, the amount of times i've thought of this song when i see an ugly bloke walking down the street with a stunning lady...

  • wake up you you eejits, joe is top of the popsme n my mate jack had a pint with him/you about 1978 in the queens hotel, bradford.hows brinsleys doing joe?

  • Joe Jackson never got the credit he deserves.

  • an absolute classic

  • oh god please don't take him home tonight :(

  • I'm a guy. And this pretty much sums up everyone's thoughts when people see us lmao

  • He recovers quite well after the "Where?!" lol.

  • im here becoz of something about marry ... O.O

  • Anyone think this might be where the Raconteurs got 'steady as she goes' from?

  • @billiesrus just about everyone....lolol

  • @billiesrus have you ever heard Pachelbel's Canon in D? Well the bass line you're hearing is the descending fifths used there. Pretty much every pop song ever has used it, you just have to listen. So in that way the Raconteurs and Joe Jackson both got it from some classical dude 300 years ago.

  • LOOK OVER THERE! WHERE?

  • funny when he laughs when the audience says "where?" lol

  • I love how he laughs when the audience responds.

  • @AlphaOmegoat - and he manages to keep it together! The second time around, it looked like he was about to start laughing himself! :-)

  • @AlphaOmegoat He's just realised that he doesn't have to pay for the backing vocals :-)

  • 659,349th viewer! That's my favorite number! Oh man! How lucky can I be!

  • A few minutes ago this song popped into my head and I had to find out who did it.. The song is pretty funny. I have always loved this song. Thanks Joe

  • Is she?

  • DUMBO

  • i am gonna make a music video for this song i swear

  • The title's the question we've all asked!

  • Steady as she goes - Raconteurs. Is that a rip off of this song!?

  • @StingrayWil That's the first thing i thought when i heard the bass riff

  • @StingrayWil

    Quite so, it would appear.

  • Excellent work. Top musician. Prefer Different for Girls, but always intelligent lyrics and top musicianship.

  • @heysven Thanks, it's good to know that someone shares that opinion :)

  • I've always believed that Jackson is seriously underrated as a musician. He's incredibly talented and a top bloke.

  • @ManzaneraIsGod : And I agree with you. No more to say there.

  • Were!?

  • He's my number ONE artist, composer, lyricist, singer... number one, that's all... Respect for the entire career of that man!

  • 19 people are deaf thumbs up if u agree!!!

  • "WHERE?!" @ 1:29 is a riot. Riotous. Screamfullicious. If I were there, that's what I'd do.

  • One of my all time favorite artists

  • love it when performer laugh when they arent supposed to. like on skit shows is always the best

  • thumb up, sticky song

  • what a great post!Thanks!

  • "Look over there...WHERE?!" Funny how he laughed abit @ beginning of song.

  • The sweet story line with the excellent Jackson delivery caressed by the killer base line makes this epic.

  • im back,my key board was unplugged my bad,get a life get burprped by mommy and dont go to paryies down my street!

  • Sick shit!`

  • he looks like jigsaw -_-

  • @acheesyturd Nah, Derek Ogilvie (if u don't know him, google him)

  • @acheesyturd Bahahahaha, he totally does. XD

  • sugar ray did a cover of this song, their both really good

  • I used to hear this song on the radio all the time and I remember it being sang with a lower voice. I like the lower voice a lot better, so is there anybody with a radio or studio version of this song? I would highly appreciate it of you send it to me.

  • I like the audience participation. And the performance itself, of course....!

  • why does this remind me of shrek?

  • king from queens8 this is real rock

  • hahah and my dad singed this song at his wedding

  • Funny how when u break up with someone - The songs and mostly the lyrics jump out and bite you on the a**.

The songs all make sense and really get ya when u r sad from the break up.

  • Look over there....WHERE? there's a lady that I used to know............

  • I saw this band four times during their warm up and main tour that year. The warmup gig in a small club in Cowley Road in Oxford will live with me for ever. Great band.

  • lol when my Gf broke up with me, and i found out who she was going out with, this song came on the radio somehow, haha

  • @sithmaster61 LULZ

  • Englishman like Joe Jackson brings crush forever..that covert coat. that slim boy..top notch

  • omg I love this song so epic

  • Sounds like a Sugar Ray ripoff if I've ever heard one... =)

  • @WestCoastPunk69 haha funny...because this song came out 10 years before Sugar Ray existed :)

  • @WestCoastPunk69 "Is she really going out with him?" was released on Joe's first album "Look Sharp" released March 1979

  • @WestCoastPunk69 Sugay Ray DID do this song but it was cover of Joe Jackson's. It was originally released in 1978. :)

  • @WestCoastPunk69 Sugar Ray are a rip off of Joe Jackson more like it!

  • i love joe jackson. too bad young people are not aware of this great talent

  • Comment removed

  • GREAT Classic Rock Song!! Country Music and 80's Rock are the 2 BEST genres of music!! :-D

  • I love Joe but "Later" was one of the best shows the BBC ever produced. The array of talent on the show was amazing.

  • Yes kiddies. Joe Jackson is from the era when what mattered most was talent, not how good ya look in a video. He sounds great live. So few can really say that anymore.

  • gefällt mir gut,Jochen,wünsche dir und deinem Bierkumpel viel Spaß auf dem Konzert!..........

  • lol so funny when the crowd says WHERE?! haha I love when the crowd gets involved in live performances!

  • @getthepoooffmybum You see how he laughs when they do it for the first time? Then he almost loses control as it continues. Audience participation ROCKS!

  • @headstock48 Lol yes that is just classic!

  • this is the song i told my friend to listin to cuz it reminded me of her and her ass hole boy friend (my ex)

  • hahhahhha

  • Great performance, joe really looks like a mouse in the video!

  • So great how he laughs every time the crowd yells "WHERE?" :-)

  • @jehouse It's even better because people have no doubt been doing it for years but he still gets a kick out of it.

  • i remember this song and relating to it. gorillas meant big muscled guys. macho attitutde etc. maybe not too smart.... who always got the good women.

  • Yeeeessssss, 460,000th view! I know it's immature to do that, but it isn't often that such a coincidence happens to me.

  • @ligerhunter5223 Yeeeeeeeesssssssssssss! 608, 898th view, in no thats mature, but how many people can say they were the 608, 898th view. lol :)

  • @dirtydawg661 ye boy 615,617 view i love his album steppin out

  • @ligerhunter5223

true me it's not a coincidence, it's fate. YOu were meant to be the 460,000th poster. Personally I'd have much preferred playing the lottery when luck was looking over you ;)

  • awesome drummer!

  • loved this song wen it 1st came out still love it now 30 years latter

  • They made him laugh with the "Where?" That's hilarious!

  • wait... walking with gorillas?....

  • @p01s0nAc1d

Yeah. Gorillas lol I can only imagine he means like, hairy bikers etc. I'd assume that its about all the pretty ladies going for muscley, hairy guys, while he propably sees himself as the weedy, sensitive type who never got a chance with the pretty ones.

Just watch any American "coming of age" movie.

I do not think for a minute that its race related...which, Im assuming that all your full stops are hinting at... ;)

  • @HaggisnNeeps Think Again. IF you can find the original video, there will be no doubt to what they refer. Different time, and different beliefs. This was 1978, mixed doubles was a relatively new and not real popular concept.

  • @p01s0nAc1d Jackson absolutely means that the pretty girls are spending time with macho, muscle bound, pretty but stupid guys. You know, they're gorillas, animals. And he's left out. Apparently, intelligence and sensitivity are not getting him the girls.

  • we've given Joe Jackson's "Be My Number Two" a twist..found on our video response! We believe kids of today should hear his fantastic songs!

  • @bloodyforeigner29 I m onley 15 and i am a fan of Joe

  • @bloodyforeigner29 I am a kid of today, and I listen to this stuff. It's phenomenal. Joe Jackson, Dire Straits, The Who, The Beatles...the list never ends!

  • Whateva...Joe Jackson s one of the most over looked artists of our time (period)

  • i heard this song a few years ago,,an i thought,,thats a cool steve miller song,,i thought,,it was joe jackson,,i never heard of him,,but love it,,

  • story of my life...

    something going wrong around here

  • Schweeeet hope my ole man will soooooo b singin this soooon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Steady as she goes!!

  • Awesome tune....

  • Joe can blame his lack of success on whatever. I met the genuis in 1980. He was as negative AND brilliant as his music. For what thats worth. Meanwhile, thank you Joe. EXCELLENT, BRILLIANT TUNEAGE.

  • @Heister1102 where did you meet and how was he negative?

  • @evelynmh As a student program director, I was at a college radio station convention in Washington D.C. There were several up and coming groups there... Most of the bands were really friendly and reach out to the "kids. " This was back in the day (it was 1980 or 81, I forget) when College Radio still determined who the next big group would be (think REM, Police, Johnny Cougar, MANY others....) Anyway, Joe sat by himself and wouldn't even talk to us. He cut his set short, clearly annoyed.

  • @Heister1102 I found your reply interesting (no Im not being sarcastic). In a way it kind of sums the man up for me. Brilliant musician but very aloof. I guess if he wasn't though, he would never have written such good songs.

  • @Heister1102 It's always a bummer when you find out something bad about an artist you like, isn't it? There are so many artists who, if you knew what they were like personally, you would never listen to their music again. Then there are people who seem cool like Neil Young, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, etc.

    Rock On, Heister1102.

  • @headstock48 What are you on about?

  • @Nigelxman What?

  • @evelynmh Australia is "all ears" waiting for the election result. It's likely to be a um well hung parliament.

  • @twisteddsister I read that the "Ginger Ninja" was hung out to dry by the electorate....hopefully her party will be "all ears" when dealing with this potential set back regarding the lost seats in Parliament

  • @evelynmh You could say Australia is rudderless in more ways than one at the moment. Julia's beard even touched up her ROOTs for the big day, but it just wasn't good enough. Would you believe that someone purporting to be from the Labor Party called me a week out from the election to ask if they could count on my vote. In all seriousness though, I find it strangely appealing that Bobby Katter has become a real player in the game. Yeehar.

  • won it

  • This transports me back to early childhood. Must have heard it on radio 1 while playing with lego. Classic british pop, up there with XTC, Costello, Squeeze, so evocative of a certain time and place.

Hopefully I'm about to win his debut album, on tape from e-bay,for 17p (!!!!). It features this track, also 'Got the Time' which was covered brilliantly by Anthrax.

  • Joe Jackson doesn't have a tour bus. He just uses his ears to fly from venue to venue.

  • @smallfry206 sort of like Dumbo in the Disney movie?

  • @evelynmh precisely.

  • Something gone wrong around 'ear' ?

  • Comment removed

  • he could have a big dick yeah but he's butt ass ugly lol

  • cool ive got big ears too

  • @troutmanwv Then you ROCK!

  • I think I still have my old Steppin' Out cassette tape somewhere. I always wonder about this story I heard about Joe Jackson. Anytime I hear him, I flash back to the rumor........ALLEDGEDLY....He was onstage somewhere, and in the middle of whatever he was singing......someone threw a hotdog ( bun, mustard, the works ) from the audiance, and it hit him in the face. Naturally, the concert ended immediately and he stormed offstage. I always felt bad for him after that. Love his music though.

  • Its with the loss of hair

  • The GREAT JOE JACKSON, and all great musicians.

I know the JJ band much admired by CONSORTIUM, listen to them on the albums "REBIRTH" and "13th HOUR"

  • I think he has big in-ear monitors on. And, yes, he does look kind of weird these days.

  • I'm 15 years old and play pop punk/punk rock music, but one thing a lot of people who know me dont know, is that i love joe jackson and this song and hes one of my musical influences even though it may not sound like it in my music.

  • He looks so weird nowadays. I think he's had a botched plastic surgery.

  • i love this video its the best in the whole world and so is this song sing it J.J

  • great this song is the best if you depri

  • best concert I ever had in the 52 years i'm here, seen from him, respect

  • What does he mean by gorillas???

    Still, it's a fab song.

  • @PrAnG2000 Ugly dudes.

  • @LaLolaViola

OK! I actually thought at the time that he meant black guys going out with white girls.

I'd rather it be your suggestion.

  • @PrAnG2000

When he says "gorillas", he using it as a metaphor. He just means the girls are dating jerks. Big, testosterone-pumped, jerks.

  • The ugliest folks are the best songwriters, its too bad the public judges on looks. The music holds up, he's awesome.

  • 80's-ABSOLUTELY THE BEST MUSIC EVER.
