@30006714 The "idiot" you refer to in the video is Graham Maby, the bass player, who sang the backup on the record and who has been playing and singing this song for years with Joe Jackson. Your comment said "guitar" not "bass guitar." Finally, you seem to have a problem calling everyone an "idiot." You might want to limit that to yourself.
Easily one of the best examples of late 70s/early 80s rock songs...This song always takes me back to about 1980 and it hasn't lost a step in 33 years. Fast forward to the late 80s and every time one of my ex-girlfriends showed up at a party with a new guy and I'd hear this song in the back of my head :) Good times!
wake up you you eejits, joe is top of the popsme n my mate jack had a pint with him/you about 1978 in the queens hotel, bradford.hows brinsleys doing joe?
@billiesrus have you ever heard Pachelbel's Canon in D? Well the bass line you're hearing is the descending fifths used there. Pretty much every pop song ever has used it, you just have to listen. So in that way the Raconteurs and Joe Jackson both got it from some classical dude 300 years ago.
A few minutes ago this song popped into my head and I had to find out who did it.. The song is pretty funny. I have always loved this song. Thanks Joe
I used to hear this song on the radio all the time and I remember it being sang with a lower voice. I like the lower voice a lot better, so is there anybody with a radio or studio version of this song? I would highly appreciate it of you send it to me.
I saw this band four times during their warm up and main tour that year. The warmup gig in a small club in Cowley Road in Oxford will live with me for ever. Great band.
Yes kiddies. Joe Jackson is from the era when what mattered most was talent, not how good ya look in a video. He sounds great live. So few can really say that anymore.
@getthepoooffmybum You see how he laughs when they do it for the first time? Then he almost loses control as it continues. Audience participation ROCKS!
i remember this song and relating to it. gorillas meant big muscled guys. macho attitutde etc. maybe not too smart.... who always got the good women.
true me it's not a coincidence, it's fate. YOu were meant to be the 460,000th poster. Personally I'd have much preferred playing the lottery when luck was looking over you ;)
Yeah. Gorillas lol I can only imagine he means like, hairy bikers etc. I'd assume that its about all the pretty ladies going for muscley, hairy guys, while he propably sees himself as the weedy, sensitive type who never got a chance with the pretty ones.
Just watch any American "coming of age" movie.
I do not think for a minute that its race related...which, Im assuming that all your full stops are hinting at... ;)
@HaggisnNeeps Think Again. IF you can find the original video, there will be no doubt to what they refer. Different time, and different beliefs. This was 1978, mixed doubles was a relatively new and not real popular concept.
@p01s0nAc1d Jackson absolutely means that the pretty girls are spending time with macho, muscle bound, pretty but stupid guys. You know, they're gorillas, animals. And he's left out. Apparently, intelligence and sensitivity are not getting him the girls.
@bloodyforeigner29 I am a kid of today, and I listen to this stuff. It's phenomenal. Joe Jackson, Dire Straits, The Who, The Beatles...the list never ends!
@bloodyforeigner29 I am a kid of today, and I listen to this stuff. It's phenomenal. Joe Jackson, Dire Straits, The Who, The Beatles...the list never ends!
Joe can blame his lack of success on whatever. I met the genuis in 1980. He was as negative AND brilliant as his music. For what thats worth. Meanwhile, thank you Joe. EXCELLENT, BRILLIANT TUNEAGE.
@evelynmh As a student program director, I was at a college radio station convention in Washington D.C. There were several up and coming groups there... Most of the bands were really friendly and reach out to the "kids. " This was back in the day (it was 1980 or 81, I forget) when College Radio still determined who the next big group would be (think REM, Police, Johnny Cougar, MANY others....) Anyway, Joe sat by himself and wouldn't even talk to us. He cut his set short, clearly annoyed.
@Heister1102 I found your reply interesting (no Im not being sarcastic). In a way it kind of sums the man up for me. Brilliant musician but very aloof. I guess if he wasn't though, he would never have written such good songs.
@Heister1102 It's always a bummer when you find out something bad about an artist you like, isn't it? There are so many artists who, if you knew what they were like personally, you would never listen to their music again. Then there are people who seem cool like Neil Young, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, etc.
@twisteddsister I read that the "Ginger Ninja" was hung out to dry by the electorate....hopefully her party will be "all ears" when dealing with this potential set back regarding the lost seats in Parliament
@evelynmh You could say Australia is rudderless in more ways than one at the moment. Julia's beard even touched up her ROOTs for the big day, but it just wasn't good enough. Would you believe that someone purporting to be from the Labor Party called me a week out from the election to ask if they could count on my vote. In all seriousness though, I find it strangely appealing that Bobby Katter has become a real player in the game. Yeehar.
This transports me back to early childhood. Must have heard it on radio 1 while playing with lego. Classic british pop, up there with XTC, Costello, Squeeze, so evocative of a certain time and place.
Hopefully I'm about to win his debut album, on tape from e-bay,for 17p (!!!!). It features this track, also 'Got the Time' which was covered brilliantly by Anthrax.
I think I still have my old Steppin' Out cassette tape somewhere. I always wonder about this story I heard about Joe Jackson. Anytime I hear him, I flash back to the rumor........ALLEDGEDLY....He was onstage somewhere, and in the middle of whatever he was singing......someone threw a hotdog ( bun, mustard, the works ) from the audiance, and it hit him in the face. Naturally, the concert ended immediately and he stormed offstage. I always felt bad for him after that. Love his music though.
I'm 15 years old and play pop punk/punk rock music, but one thing a lot of people who know me dont know, is that i love joe jackson and this song and hes one of my musical influences even though it may not sound like it in my music.
