Awww you can tell they're forever friends! The kitten's and rat's body language showed that they are totally comfortable with each other. It made me tear up a little when I saw the rat groom the kitten! -3 Soo sweet!
I think the rat tries to groom the kitty while the kitty is disoriented, but playful. Kitty is interested in rat's tail, and is being chased by the rat, it's quite funny :P
Absolutely adorable! I couldn't stop saying "Get em, get em" but I couldn't stick to just one animal to root for. I love it! My favorite part of the vid is when the rat and actually cleaning the kitten and going into his ear that was cute.
Foxdie126: it seems that you know absolutely nothing about rats. The only reason you think that rats are disgusting is because you are linking them to the sewer rat which u presume is disgusting because it lives in a sewer. Besides what you have seen in this video is known as a fancy rat /domestic rat and are know to be highly hygienic animals. How about you watch the video and see just how many times the rat washes in the small amount of time that this video lasted. Guaranteed to be more times
people say that cats eat rats, there DEAD WRONG! they eat mice, there either friends with the rat or the rat claws the cats eyes out. rats are a lot stronger than we give credit for!!!!
@TheIssac4305 No, not ALL cats kill rats, but I had one who systematically killed a rat infestation problem we had, small ones and very large ones. He didn't eat any of them...
we have a pet store and have rescue kittens at the moments as well as a bunch of well socialized pet rats. We put the most outgoing kitten in with the rats today to see what would happen and the friendliest of the girl rats came down and started playing with her and trying to groom her - then another one came down and they were all playing and wrestling much like this - it is SO adorable!
The kitten is a little nervous but also very intrigued by the rat. The rat is a very high energy rat who has no fear at all of the kitten, she just wants to play. She feels somewhat maternal towards the kitten as she grooms it. The kitten has cause to be a bit nervous, rats are predators and some rats would try to eat the kitten, but not this one, she just wants to play :)
the rat is "power grooming" the kitten. they normally do that so show dominance over other rats. it's actually being aggressive... but i seriously doubt the rat would ever actually harm the kitten
@dizconnectedagain Yes that's power grooming but dominance is actually more affection than aggression. It has nothing to DO with aggression.
If a rat attempts to dominate something, it's trying to show whatever it's dominating that it wants to accept it, but also needs it to know the rat is the alpha.
Aggression would be boxing at the kitten or fluffing up.
The rat is just saying "yes you can join my group, but I'm going to be the leader". :3
if that rat wanted to it could have ripped that kitten apart. i think the owners were stupid to do this. have they ever been bitten by a rat? much different than a bite from a little kitten. hope the cat grew up and ate him
@redwerr It's true that rats are very strong a fast for their size (And believe me, I know how rat bites HURT!) But you don't know the temperament of this rat. Responsible rat owners tend to buy from Breeders or rescue establishments. Of course, with the latter it's hard to tell sometimes, but when a breeder selects parents for their temperament and phenotypes, they can give you a baby rat (or a couple) that you can be almost sure will not become violent unless it is in obvious danger.
@XDhuggles Responsible rat owners buy from where ever they feel like it.
If they BREED petstore rats, yes, that makes them irresponsible but where you get the rat from to own it solely as a pet has nothing to do with your knowledge and understanding of rat care.
Even [male] rats from the best breeders, can become aggressive at puberty and may have to be neutered. Not to mention rescue rats are almost 100% store bought/feeders as breeders won't let you give their rats up for adoption.
OH, and no matter where a rat comes from, it doesn't have anything to do with their aggression towards other species.
Because rats are naturally afraid of cats, the sweetest rats might attack a cat in self defense, just like the sweetest rats will likely kill a mouse and eat it because rats are predatory.
My youngest rat was raised around cats, and loves them. My older rat was not, and it REALLY shows. So it's all in how they're raised, not at all how they're bred.
@redwerr (continuing) Also: that rat did absolutely nothing wrong in this video and was even trying to groom and entertain the kitten. Why on earth do you want him eaten?? :(
@redwerr well actually, cat bites can be very nasty. Yes, rat bites can be painful, but from my experience, pet rats ONLY bite their owner if they're extremely scared and are acting in self defence, or they've been very badly tormented and hurt by their owner on a continuous basis. Rats are not particularly aggressive pets. I've had 30 rats over the past Ten years, how many have you had? If you've got no experience with pet rats, then I doubt that you can offer much accurate advice.
As someone who owns both rats and a cat, it's adorable to see the way that the inherent play behaviour of both animals can fit together even thought they're natural rivals. This video made me go squeeeee
Omfg!! the grooming!! THE GROOMING!!!! omg its so cute it made me stupid. i can just feel my IQ decreasing. but i cant look away....going to watch again now.
aww.. the cute rat was grooming the kitty's filthy ear! LOL. no but i know that rat must be a female rat because i heard females tend to be more hyper than males? is that correct? any pet rat owners out there? ^_^
Looks like the rat is trying to bite the cat. Scared the crap out of me when I first introduced my rat to my cats (as kittens), but it's just the rat saying, "Oh, you's a dirty cat, me can cleanz and make all purty, K?"
@blooeify From what I understand, toxoplasmosis makes it so rats and mice *like* the smell of cat urine. They still fear grown, aggressive cats. Sorry I don't actually know.
@dragonrideronfire Well if you mean an older rat for example from the streets, than all its gonna do is try to defend itself :P And if you mean an older rat that has been around people since birth, well than it's up to the people that it has been around how it behaves :)
No offense, but the kitten is getting really pissed off, you can tell. Rats and curious and attention-seeking. Cats don't really want attention and want to be left alone. This is why I got a rat, I hate cats for that reason... The kitten was hitting it, because the rat was being too close and too personal...
Neither the rat nor the kitten are afraid...clearly a lot of people here are not pet owners. The cat is actually happy and engaged in this, hence its erect tail and the way it always playfully locks its eyes on the rat's tail as a target. As for the rat, see Pandabbit's comment
Gosh every single animal video has comments saying "that's cruel!" when it clearly isn't. I even saw a comment on on viedo of man feeding a meowing kitten saying something like "omg, the poor kitten just feed it" omg- get a grip.
@NallelyPerez12 What!? Why do you say the rat is stupid? If it was stupid then why did it groom and interact so well with the cat? Rats are extremely sociable and intellegent for their size. All animals are lovely.
@llVeXXll that's true - I had both as pets too: a rats, cats (and dogs too), the rats always were like little dogs - quite intelligent, sociable and very affectionate - cleaning each other do all animals which live in a pack and which care for each other.
also, rats are extremely intelligent for their size. i had a hamster, then some rats, and then my little sister got another hamster. now hamsters are stupid as hell! but rats can learn very quickly. mine could climb from the floor up my leg and back onto my shoulder on command after i'd had them a dew months.
@MsGreenDAY21 Rats typically do not bite hard, like hamsters and mice. They nibble at best, because they know how to act when playing with others, including other species. My rat has never bitten me, at all, even when she was nervous during the first week I had her. The only time they'll bite hard is f they're scared, fighting or they consider an animal smaller than them a prey item (e.g.- mouse, fish, lizard, amphibian, etc.).
