Citizenship is of some significance since it's based around the idea of private property. States are also an expression of private property since they exist with the backing of violence.

Without their defense these rights would not be established for us to enjoy them and exploit them as this individual has.
I was stating that we should respect this fact and extend this respect for the flag which these soldiers fought for.
Furthermore I did not purport that we should make the act illegal, merely that it should not be encouraged as a valid for of protest due to the significance the flag has towards veterans and most proud Australians.

We should respect the flag, if you feel you wish to express an opinion, apply a more appropriate measure.

In Australia you don't have legal protections from getting your feelings hurt or being offended. You have the right to the Pursuit of happiness, you don't have the RIGHT to happiness. Free speech and freedom of expression must be protected even when unpopular. ESPECIALLY when unpopular. If you don't like someone burning a flag (there property), you have the right to turn the other way or to counter their arguments with your own use of free speech.

I understand what you're conveying, it reminds me of the great quote "Those who sacrifice liberty for equality deserve neither"; Benjamin Franklin. I feel that it should be legal to burn the flag, I understand that such a display evokes the significant emotion that would inspire such an act.
But I'm saying Australians shouldn't encourage the practice of urinating and burning the flag unless it is valid, in this case it wasn't. The flag is more then just 'cloth', and we should try to respect it.
