Yeah, in America people either get an ADN (which is about 2 years) or a BSN (4 years) and qualify to take the NCLEX test and then become a registered nurse.
Small anecdote: during high school, I was getting a certificate to become nurse aide. I did clinical hours at a nursing home. The first thing me and my group saw was an elderly person being wheeled out by the paramedics - they didn't even bother to cover the man's face! (it was apparent that he had died!!!)

yeah, I like how new nursing students are all excited before the program starts, then they start hating it soon after it begins
