i keep thinking about the comic version...at one point, Tony developed a drinking problem-imagine a drunk Iron Man-and he quit, and gave the suit to Rhodey. eventually he recovered, and made a new suit: it was red and SILVER, with a larger "backpack". that suit was later destroyed by a new enemy called Firepower-he used a NUKE...but Tony survived-by getting OUT the the suit and making it fly away on it's own. in the very next issue, Tony built a new, improved suit and defeated firepower easily.

Because either:

A) Obadiah was more exposed to the EMP blast than Tony did (His cock-pit was open).

or

B) Tony's armor was pretty much out of energy anyway, so the EMP blast didn't affect him as much. And since Obadiah was almost full, the EMP blast affected him greatly. Which is why Obadiah fell down and died while Tony only fainted :D.
