Burning calories while running a certain mph does not factor in the length of a runner's legs. For example a runner who is 5'4" and running at 5 mph is going to burn more calories than a runner who is 6' and running at 5 mph because a shorter person will have shorter legs and thus have to put in more effort to maintain the 5 mph pace than a tall person with long legs. Leg length determines natural stride length which effects how much effort a person has to put in to maintain a certain mph.
@ijustlovetea sprinting is way better elite athletes jogg 5 min and start sprinting jogging is like a warm up man elites use it as warm up its no excersice....except for regular ppl who die while jogging

I read that by doing wind sprints, and then walking for like 2 minutes, then wind sprints, repeted-- you burn like 4x as much calories then if you were just jogging.
where'd you read that? because that's what I do and after about 2 weeks (3-4x/week) I saw even more results than I ever have when just jogging or running or walking alone... I guess it's true.
I DISAGREE avorachak127! With all do respect! You are in fact wrong! Because the faster you move the more calories you burn so by sprinting you lose more calories then running! By running you lose more calories then walking! So in that case how fast you move when performing a physical activity does matter!
If you run a mile it takes 4-6 minutes. When you walk it takes 12-15 minutes. You are burning calories at a faster rate while running BUT you are doing it for less time. THINK ABOUT IT. Apology for your ignorance is excepted. Did you even read my full comment? Runners world only asks for you weight and distance traveled when they calculate calories burned. you think they are wrong too?
Thank you. Per distance, jogging only burns slightly more caleries than walking, and running fast per distance burns about the same caleries as jogging slowly.

Haha indeed, this video is totally useless!
How many calories you burn is also very individual.
Just RUN and you will burn calories, and feel good (wich is the most important factor!)

It was an msnbc article, but I've seen the same thing said in many different forms, most noteably the show "4th and Long" LOL.

The real contest is how to run efficiently so you can cover a decent distance. Best to start out with a walk/jog program.
