@deadm ok, i might be wrong but it may be due to the cartographic technique used on this diagram. It's a Mercator projection, which spreads the sphere's surface onto rectangular plane, effectively 'forcing' the horizontal distances to extend with distance from equator. So in fact, the planes might be flying with the same speed as the ones due south, but as they seem faster as they have to make up for the greater 'fictional' distance which in fact isn't any greater. Just a theory ;)

When you get that far north, you can travel "around" the world (in respect to longitude) in a much shorter distance. They seem to be going so fast because they are travelling a much shorter distance but the warped map makes it look like they are going much further in the same amount of time.

This is so people can sleep during the long flight. Local flights are also more scarce at night since people don't want to fly small distances during the night.

That's airplanes, appearing to move faster due to the map projection. The poles appear to be larger than they actually are (stretched). So it's just air traffic crossing the polar areas - and in reality they're not moving faster.
