I believe all branches of the US military were created for specific purposes only, mainly to defend the US against invasion, or imminent invasion, or from Domestic Threat as well, and, under certain circumstances, to deploy to other countries in order to protect and serve alongside our allies, in their country(s) if they are invaded.
