This scene replayed itself in my mind for years. And I finally saw it again here for the first time. It made me cry. Thank you for sharing this memorable moment.
@hlywdplayer While I understand the whole point of the movie was all about race, I found this particular scene to be about more than just race. Race doesn't even matter if we don't know who we are as individuals...to our own parents. In that context, I hope you can now understand why I choose to only use this 3 minutes, six seconds of the movie. However, Ii you're still unsatisfied, you're always free to upload the parts of the movie you want to see. :-)
He had every right to disagree with his father and do what he wanted to do, that is not even open for discussion. But, he was way out of line to tell his father to "SHUT UP!" And I do way OUT OF LINE!
@DuaneMThomas Both of my parents...dad went to prison when i was two and mom just was urban undereducated crazy lady at the time...thank goodness I drop the myth of god and honor your crazy ass parents a little while ago and can stand up to my mom, my dad well he's cool, but a whole different bag of worms ;-)...I put it too u like this, I can't watch this scene without crying...that's how bad my childhood was to me
kkoo, I cannot speak for what you experienced as a child of your father, mine (a HS dropout) on the other hand sacrificed his life, time, and money, so his 4 children could be educated at private schools and graduate from universities. We were more sophisticated, educated & were able to provide for our families even better than he did, but without it being necessary for us to work 7 days a week like he HAD to. He was the reason why. On the rare occasions my dad was out of line? I bit my lip!
@DuaneMThomas What's the difference between saying "You don't say that to me" and "Shut up"? Both were being disrespectful. If you believe that the means justify the ends on any sort of level, then it's a worthy sacrifice to tell your own father to shut up just so he'll listen when you have something as important to say as he did. The only person out of line was his father. When you're verbally attacked, like physical attacks, you have to use something forceful just to defend yourself.
@slaughtz, what's the difference? There is a huge difference, with the former being a defense against the latter. I cannot fathom someone equating those statements equally, but hey...that's what makes the world go round!
de78show: I agree...this is much bigger than race...What Sidney is saying trancends race, its something anyone can identify with regards to being an "adult child". Thanks again for posting. It's my favorite movie quote ever and makes me think of my mom.
@ 23kkelsey: The repayment would only be that our children do the same for their own children...only better. Actually, I think that's what you said.
@snyper42: I cut the part about race because I wanted the focus of this clip to be about how some parents (sometimes even mine) seem to act like they are OWED something more than love, respect and appreciation. Many parents, all races get this wrong. How do we tell them different without sounding disrespectful? Sydnie did it for us!
@de78show I wish U would had keep it because it showed how Sidney grew from what his father put into him. He was a man, not a labeled man. I sometimes dislike when other Americans who aren't black seem to undermine the great things we do just to fit their agendas
Aside from race, what he's saying is so deep and true...you owe your children the very best you have to offer but not for repayment later, only to pour into another to prepare him/her to do the same later in life.
I really love this old film, and this scene in particular . . . but you cut it before the all-important closing lines : " . . . you think of yourself as a black man. I think of myself as a man..." To bad, because it is the crowning point of the scene.

Both men were right. It's a blured line in which black people have to walk.

This is not a Black, or African American scene, his is a Human scene.
There is not a Son who has not had to make this speech to his Father.
And then when that Son is a Father, he has to hear his own words thrown back at him.
And that Father, when he thinks it through, should be proud.

@de78show
I agree completely. The whole point of this speech is NOT being of ANY color, but being a son and a dad and growing up.

@de78show Agreed. This is an amazing scene that brings in a whole new theme to a wonderful movie.

It's a great film but what strikes me as horrendous is that they are each considering marrying someone they have only known for 10 days!!!!!!
