One early Toscanini/NBC Symphony broadcast was cut off because it ran too long; reportedly, Toscanini heard about this and complained to RCA boss David Sarnoff and was assured that this would never happen again. However, I am sure that Toscanini tried to keep the concerts within the time allotted by NBC. There were occasional broadcasts, such as the seven operas and the major choral works, where the time was extended beyond the normal hour-long time slot.
one wonders i that nbc made it known that there were time limits to their broacasts. the toscanini beethoven 5th of 22 march 1952 is available on rca lm 1757, where the first-movement repeat is observed. in the television clip of the same performance, the repeat is omited. was ist's?
You don't see many conductors doing it without the score in front of them.

Looks like the orchestra is all male. Is that what they did in those days or just this one?

Violins & violas are allways ok, if the director is ok.
But cellos & double basses don't exist any more. Padre Arturo used the last ones 60 years ago...

Toscanini is great (sorry for telling generally accepted truth)
You'll never find a modern orchestra with cellos and contrabasses, like he found.
Maestro is great!

curious that toscanini omits the first-movement repeat here, when he observed it in the recording he made with the orchestra two years later.
