Well, even though it is a live recording (all the better), I think it is absolutely stunning. Would love to have been at that concert - one of those special moments. Just lovely.
who is the one lost soul that didn't like this (I assume it is lindawatcher, from the pathetic comment below) ? I've never seen or heard a "bad" version of this incredible poem
Beautiful. I think the camera work leaves a lot to be desired, unfortunately. Did they not realize that Kate took the lead in the second verse, while Ronstadt was singing harmony? Maybe the director was in love with Linda (like many of us back then). Ah, well, it doesn't matter. Still lovely singing of a great song.
This is perhaps one of the greatest songs for conveying what it’s like to experience the real natural beauty of California for the first time. Written by the Kate McGarrigle and sung with her sister Anna and the great Linda Ronstadt, it just doesn’t get any better.
During the "Western Wall" Tour in the late 1990s, Linda and Emmylou Harris performed at the Beacon Theater in NYC. The show was fantastic. They sang their hearts out for 2 hours and the harmonies were so gorgeous the crowd would have stayed all night. This song was one of the highlights. Linda never sounded better and after it, the crowd gave her a heartfelt ovation for what seemed like more than 5 minutes. What a singer!
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Linda's recorded version of this is unsurpassed, but this live version with the McGarrigles is irreplaceable, and those of us who love this song owe a huge debt to 1000Magicians for this treasure, which I never thougfht I would find. Linda Ronstadt's absence from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame continues to amaze.
The mixing is bad on this. The sisters are drowning out Ronstadt's lead. Plus, the piano is leading and dictating in a staid fashion. This is a beautiful song but it needs more emotion in it. It is a little too cold and strict.-jack
@littlejackbubba Firstly this is obviously a 'live' recording so the mix is never going to be up to studio standard. Also its a bit much to criticise Kate's piano playing since she wrote the song and therefore can interpret it as she wishes.
I can't believe only 5,000 people have stopped by to listen to this beautiful, amazing, and seminal tune. It deserves a much wider audience. Thank you so much for posting.
And even if they are "gay lovers," how is that relevant to anything? Other than to demonstrate your own "gaydar". In other words, it tells us far more about you than it does about them. Now, go get yourself a life.
@RaderBarbarian I still think they were gay lovers!... probably died of aids years ago! Lets review... Gay lover- - dead years ago.... Me-- straight man- -still alive and healthy 28 years later... HMMM????
Oh so sweet

What a beautiful song, both the words, music and the interpretation from Linda. This should become a classic and a huge tribute to Kate.

There may be a better song in our language about lost love, but I doubt it. Every note, every lyric, it's all genius. Sincere thanks for posting.

Singing in the purest form, as it should be and so seldom is heard nowadays
