@skaboosh Thanks! It's been a while since I've used batteries, but when I did it didn't eat them that bad. I've actually read of people getting up to 40 hours of them. Although, as the batteries die they do start to alter the tone of the amp, a lot like a fuzz pedal when the batteries fade.
I have a question: what Power Supply do you use with your 7-100? On my side, I get too much humming when I use a external power, the culprit is not my guitar grounding
@F8H It would definitely work for an acoustic bass, but unless you're looking for that fuzz tone with the bass, it may not be the best option. Still, could be a cool effect.
Erik, not only are you a very good axeman, you presented this quite well and make a good case for this amazing little amp (I got one a few months back.) Moreover, what you recorded here, in my opinion is CD-ready stuff! That's impressive...
@darthmacdougall Thanks so much. I just try to make the best sounding and informative videos I can. In this case I wanted to capture, as best as I could, how the amp really sounds in the room and how to get the most out of it. It really is a great little amp. :-)
Nice video, i notice you have a power supply plugged into your pig, what kind of power adaptor are you using? i have an electro-harmonix one that is 9V output that fits the amp but don't know if there's a particular adaptor you should use, and instructions on the box just say use a 9V power supply. Long live the pig!
@kidd912thomas Youtube uses different audio compression for different resolutions. 60kbps MP3 for 240p, 128kbps AAC for 360p & 480p and 152kbps AAC for 720p and higher. It's constantly changing as well. When I first uploaded this video the standard for 360p was 96kbps AAC. So switching to the highest resolution guarantees you'll be hearing the audio as close to what I actually uploaded as possible.
and theres me thinking i d just bought myself a nice little practice amp, when its a whole lot more!! can i ask whether you d use the pignose miked 4 live performances or r u jst talking about recording isn studio?
@chezruss I've never gigged with mine, I basically use it just as a practice amp or for recording. If you wanted to use it on stage you could probably mic it, but it might be a better idea to use the preamp out to send it to a power amp with an external cab.
Bought one this morning on Craigslist like new for $30. With the aid of your video, I figured out how to get the sounds I was looking for. I'm impressed. Looks like my Tweed Blues Jr. will now serve as a pignose stand here at the house
@daikaiju73 Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad it helped. It really is such a great little, misunderstood, amp. I just wanted to help show how to really make it shine (or sing... or kick ass). :-)
@TheSaiko16 It's not meant to, it's about 3 or 4 times bigger and much heavier than that little Marshall amp that can clip on a belt. It does have strap buttons on the side though so you can use a guitar strap and hang it over your shoulder or behind your back.
@simpleone1989 I use the standard Pignose 9V adaptor. I've heard that some people have tried higher voltages, but I've never done it myself. As for pedals; modulation and time based effects really work best. Since it's already a fuzz amp, adding more distortion doesn't sound that good. If I'm using any pedal at all it's usually only a delay for some slapback or a wah to get that classic mid '70's Frank Zappa tone. Both sound really good with it.
@simpleone1989 No, it will definitely not work. The pignose is a 9V AC, vs the standard Boss stopbox which is a 9V DC. The plugs are completely different as well.
@taez555 You are correct about the plugs being different however I'm holding my Pignose power supply in my hands, with a Pignose label on it and it 9VDC 300ma.
Any 9V dc adapter will work if it's at least 300ma and has the right plug (easy enough to change or make an adapter for) In fact a Pignose really gets a nice distorted sound with less voltage. Put weak batteries in and compare it to new batteries some time. I use a 7.5v DC adapter sometimes just to get that tone.
@sledge57a You know you are correct, I was reading it wrong. It's labeled as "AC Adapter", but then a few lines underneath it says "DC Output, 9V, 300ma" etc.
@Atticus6423 It really depends what you're playing. If you're playing more mellow acoustic stuff, the pignose clean will hold it's own, however if you're really digging in and playing hard with a big booomy acoustic sound the pignose's clean may be lost. The fuzz tone however can play over or with any acoustic. In the end it's a very touch sensitive amp, that even when set to fuzz, if you play with your fingers vs a pick you can get some still dirty but cleaner tones.
Is that an old one made in usa or one of the newer made in china pignoses cos i heard they dont hav a germanium transistor r sumtin so they dont sound as good
@dysfac It’s a newer model in that it’s not one of the original 70's versions with the germanium transistor. However I couldn’t tell you where it was built as it doesn’t say on the inside, it only has the US company address. The SN# is in the 15,000's and I got it around 1990 if that helps. Based on it’s age I’m assuming it’s a Hong Kong model with the silicon transistor. I know the speaker is brand new, since I only got it in 2010. You should check out my website for this amps whole history.
If the S.N is in the 15,000's and you have a US L.A address, I'd say you must have an older germanium model. I've read the change to silicon happened in 1984 or 1986, since you bought yours new in 1990 it does seem possible.
Anyway, the newer model's voiced as close as possible to the old germanium, all that's needed is to turn the new pignose down a quater turn. I guess the old model just has a slightly sweeter and louder clean tone.
@refoowbuS I decided to open it up and take a look and the transistors are the silver metal type and are labeled B172(A) & B175(B). The circuit board was ancient, but my understadning is the prefix "B" means they're silicon. "A" would have been Germanium. To bad, I was started to get my hopes up I had the same amp as Zappa. :-) Still a killer sounding amp.
I think you're right about them being silicon, but you should still count yourself lucky. I've read that the new ones may well use an IC (Digital) power amp, whereas yours most likely uses a Transformer. The digital power amp section would really kill the interactivity of the classic 7-100.
I just bought a brand spanking new one to mod and they still use a transformer, not an IC for the power amp section. Whoever I got that info from was obviously wrong, phew!
how much do these cost
ixlikexscurvy 1 day ago
@ixlikexscurvy They're usually around $75 new. If you're looking for one, I added some links in the info section of the video.

I once saw Roger McGuinn back in the 70's at URI playing his Rickenbacker live with a Pig Nose and i asked him did he modify it .
he said he only changed the speaker it was in a large GYM and he miked it and it sounded great, Nelson DeCoteau
