A masterful rendition, full of sensibility, soul and such a real professional technique of cello playing ! Very impressive. Good orchestra too, of course. One of the few best renditions i've ever heard.
What a marvel! I am listening to Linn Harrell's KolNidrei two nights after Yom Kipur. It moved me deeply. Had to be very brave not to cry over the computer keyboard. Thanks to Max Bruch for such a beautiful piece of music, based on the prayer that we, Jews, made during the Inquisition times, to ask God to forgive our sins, as pretending a conversion to catholicism, in order to survive. And thanks to all musicians that include it on their repertoire.
It's ironic that this performance should be in the Vatican which inspired the Kol Nidrei prayer as a plea for forgiveness for betraying Judaism by victims of the Inquisition who were forced to convert or pretended to be Catholics. Part of the prayer is asking for forgiveness for the sins they were about to commit as a result of the evils that were being enacted on orders of the pope.
@Carltoncellobassist It wasn't a plea for forgiveness of the Catholic church. The church is beyond forgiveness in its historical depravity. The Jews knew they would be committing blasphemy in order to save their lives. Judaism requires that you do whatever it takes to save your own life. They were following the law of survival but repenting for what they were being forced to do. Study the history of the horrors and tortures of the Inquisition. They are equal to the Nazis.
I´m watching this extraordinary rendition of Kol Nidrei on Erev Yom Kippur, and it´s an amazing combination of harmony and sadness, beauty and spirituality that reaches the soul, enhanced by the fact that it´s a Holocaust remembrance moment convened by none other than Pope John Paul II, whose white figure solemnly standing during the performance says it all about inter-religious respect, fraternal love and -why not- atonement. Baruch ha-Shem!
Yes, this is a great performance all around. Bravos to Lynn Harrell, the Royal Philharmonic and to the conductor, Sir Gilbert Levine. If I remember correctly, Maestro Levine wrote about this historic and deeply moving concert in his memoir "The Pope's Maestro."
As I heard the rising voice of the cello toward its concluding sweetness, I realized I'd never heard a cello reach up to this range, the high spheres of heaven where yet depth is not denied. The last note seemed like the tender kiss of a Most Loving Loved One~ Divine Being Itself.
How exquisitely the cello voices the grief of the human soul. Bruch's sublime gift honors the Jewish people and all who mourn~ compassionate music touches the wound in the soul in the face of overwhelming suffering. I Listened, transported to the Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem. Concert lights fused with the eternal flame burning there to honor the known and unknown, offering them healing in heavenly light. Music of the spheres uplifts them, and us. Deep thanks to you who play our souls well!
Really the whole point is this: The playing must be good, but it is a prayer of the deepest significance , and should evoke those feelings of ... awe.
Emotional, deep, beautiful! A wonderful piece for an extremely talented musician! Bravo as well to the orchestra and conductor who provide a wonderfully synchronized counterpoint to the soloist without ever giving you the feeling of "competition". Bravo, Mr. Harrell, this is an inspired and moving performance!
@mfte260 Thank you! It has been my career intent to match or at least try to emulate the singers' power of meaning in expressing music.. so your comment means much to me!
The piece is so beautiful but too much vibrato for my taste.

@Chesed1 I think i think it a request for forgiveness that what the catholic church did was wrong.

There is something lush and deep about Harrell's Kol Nidre that I've yet to hear duplicated by anybody else. He 'sings' it excellently.
