  • Great song by Brian Hyland! Produced by the late Del Shannon. Peaked on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in November 1970!

Bravo, Brian Hyland & Del Shannon (R.I.P., Sir)!

  • do youe have an original version.I do .Talk to me

  • blast from the past seeing the 45, had this song also

  • Eso, los radios a transistor eran lo máximo en esa época

se acuerdan de la marcas? : Yo tenía un Sanyo, con audífono.... Era como un tesoro para mi. Qué tiempos aquellos....

  • eydie57 ..nothing i just was making a remark...dont feed into it .ok?

  • does anybody knew that he is gay?

  • @09bnunez how is that relevant to anything?

  • @09bnunez yes,Brian Hyland is gay and I love to suck his cock whenever hes in town.Tom Diehl

  • A great forgotten song! Thanks for posting and reminding me that it's missing from my library.

  • Oh wow I always loved this song,,,

  • The original recording is by the Impressions (featuring Curtis Mayfield -who wrote it). Wasn't easy to find on YouTube but I did. The title just says "Gypsy Woman" but doesn't give the artist. It has a black&white picture of three guys.

  • Ok Ok he sounds good but he's sounds like he's tryin to copy curtis mayfield sound. The original still sounds better, this got to much of that 70's sound to me

  • I just love how much Brian Hyland grew and developed. That Bikini song of his is just terrible, but by 1970 he was doing songs like this. There is a lot of texture and attention to detail in this song--it is fabulous. Well done, Mr. Hyland!

    Thank you for posting, Carol!

  • listen to the Persuassions version

  • This song still gets regular play on most oldie stations. So it should not be a forgotten song to most, if it is then your just not into the oldies.

  • ....I LOVE THIS SONG!! I have the 45 rpm also, in my record & cd collection. Mr Hyland has a beautiful voice & this is a classic from 1970. I also keep up, with the times, I LOVE pop music from the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, '00's! & now in 2010! I also LOVE LADY GAGA!! I'm 54 years old, & pop keeps me young at heart! Peace Gary in PA USA.

  • Toronto, Ont 1972! Oh the memories.

  • Great Song Brian, This Is Music, Let's Bring It Back.

  • @smokeythecat1000 Please someone tell me how we went from this to the Jonas Brothers in 40 short years!

  • @kap3181 boy you said a mouthful there.in 20 more years lady gaga will be like janis joplin?yuk

  • @MegaBearslayer No one can be like Joplin but Hoplin! Gaga doesn't even come close. Take that back! lol Sending good vibes only.

    Janis was the man!

  • Thanks Carol for posting this song - (( Great Tune ))

  • OMG, this is the best "forgotten song" in the world!

  • Great oldie

  • Pure poetry...Lovely woman in motion, with hair as dark as night. Her eyes were like that of a cat in the dark.

  • Pure poetry...Lovely woman in motion, with hair as dark as night. Her eyes were like that of a cat in the night.

  • awesome song

  • I have an old Brian Hyland single "Hung Up In Your Eyes" b/w "Why Mine" on Philips with the pic sleeve. Until happening upon this post, I didn't know he meant so much to people. That's nice.

  • Persuasions did the best version of this song on their album "They Came to Play." Puts this version to shame.

  • @mantis707 No one can put this version to shame. Del Shannon produced it.

  • Great song! A lot of people don't know that Curtis Mayfield actually wrote this song and recorded it years before Brian's wonderful version. Thanks carols45s for this fantastic memory!

  • great song i was 21 then and wondering why i couldnt find love

  • Have had the pleasure and great fortune of knowing and loving a gypsy woman for thirty years...love this song

  • This is a much better version that Mayfield's

  • I stumbled across this great forgotten song. Reminds me of the sixth grade. I listened to it all summer while I was picking strawberries for school clothes money. Just me, my sister, and the transister radio. Great memories, great song!

  • @deborah498

Yeah, as a kid, I too never went anywhere without my favorite transistor radio.

AM radio only. The sound of endless static....no matter how good the reception....always some amount of static in the background.

Oh!, and that little white earpiece (with the long white wire) always in my right ear!

  • @deborah498 This song reminds me of the first time I fucked your sister in the ass in the early seventies.Great memories..Cottage cheese ass!

  • By any chance was that in the Salinas Valley when you picked strawberries?

  • @deborah498 was that in the Salinas Valley in the summer?

  • I love this tune both versions Curtis.s and Brians but i have not heard any one say anything about Santanas version with his big band this is a must hear for Gypsi woman fans

  • from my 8th grade class 1970-at kennedy jr high school in waltham mass. to my late friend -tommy donlon- tommy was hit by a car on lake st in waltham mass, on 24july 1972, i miss him so much, tommy died on that day.any hit from our jr high class, makes me think of him alive.i miss him so much.we were 14 when he died.i cry sometimes when i hear these songs from 70-71-72.tommy i cant wait to see you, someday.tommy is buried in calvary cem in waltham mass. your still in my heart always-love peter.

  • @peteboy1113 very sad, I know certain songs remind me of someone dear whom I lost long ago, more than 20 years ago now , this song brings back bittersweet memories for me too. My best wishes to you.

  • i miss him so much. the car jumped the sidewalk. he was -d o a -. i hope he never knew what hit him.14 was to young.

  • very sorry to hear about your friend......we're both about the same age....obviously you cared for him deeply...I'll pray for his soul

  • This takes me back,I was 19 when this came out, it holds many fond memories. Thanks

  • LOVE YOU GYPSY !!!!

  • Not bad for a cover.

He couldn't carry water for Curtis Mayfield, though.

  • BS - this lays Mayfield's original version (I know he wrote it) to shame. I am a Mayfield fan too.

  • great with del shannon's input. this version even better than the original by the Impressions. i remember this song during my army call-up in oz. thanksxxx

  • I have loved this song for decades.

    Thankyou for putting it up.

  • i still have an 8-track player that work with a turntable

  • woot woot!

  • For a white guy whose output was pretty lightweight, Hyland made this a powerful song. Kudos to him and the producer for pulling it off!

  • was this a # 1 record

  • This version blew away the Impressions.

  • I have the Impressions original on a CD called The Best of The Tams and The Impressions. There are five each songs to both groups. The first five are the Tams, and the second 5 are The Impression. It's this song that kicks off the Impressions half of the disk.

  • Recorded in 1970 by Hyland, written by Curtis Mayfield and a hit for him and his group The Impressions 9 years prior. Produced by Del Shannon and I believe he sings back up vocals as well. This recording has never seen the light of day in true stereo--on the original UNI LP and later CD releases the song shows up in mono, surprising because by then even most mono 45s had stereo LP counterparts.

  • Thank's for this information I was unaware of it.

  • Almost forgot about this gem - thanks.youtube

  • Always loved this song--thanks for posting!!

  • I still have some of my 45's and a few lp's.I have some 8 track's also.I even have a record player.

  • 1970 was way before my time i was born in 1978. but i heard this song from an oldies station my parents listened to. when my teen years came, the music died. the way i see it, after the 1980s the music stopped. today if you have a tiny waiste, big knockers, then you're a star. what a pitty... this song is the bomb too bad i was born too late..

  • i had that same 45 as a child in 1975...please post the b-side "You and Me" i can't find it anywhere

  • A great take on this song. As good as the Impressions original--and that's saying a lot!

  • I had that 45

    Love this song

  • Anyone else remember the one scene from "The Wire" were they played this?

  • This song rocked my world when I was 10! And it stills rocks my world, and I'll be 50 in September.

  • Smart people saved and took care of all their old 45's!

  • Thank you whoever put ths song on, my man loves for me to dance to it...;)

  • God, I'd forgotten this one until I watched the Heartbreak Kid. You've kept this in good shape. Thanks for this.

  • Lots of artists have covered this Curtis Mayfield gem, but 've always like this version of the song best.

  • Me, too, sunnburn.

  • GOOD! AND i LIKE TO SEE THE ARTIST LOOK GOOD

  • thank you carols, i was in the 8th grade when this song came out. nov 1970, i was groovin then. a great oldie but goodie. 20.000 hits not bad.

  • Piękna piosenka ;)

  • Check Out The Official Brian Hyland YouTube Channel

  • Terrific song from a fantastic movie : " Heartbreak Kid " w/ Ben Stiller . Great !

  • Great song....but you must be joking when you the heartbreak kid was a fantastic movie....it was not even a good movie and its a insult to the first one...but since you like that arrogant loser ben stiller, you are probably too young and stupid to know that....

  • Thankfully this song is now available on cd! My 45's of this wore out years ago, and they sounded like crap anyhow. The new remastered cd sounds like you're right in the studio.

  • Classic. I had the same 45 vinyl record by uni.

  • This is from The Heartbreak Kid

  • It's from 1970.Ben Stiller didn't make it.

  • i love this song its one of my faves

  • one of the best...always listen to it and still do.....the good ole days...thank you very much......5*****

  • My mom had the same exact record! Or 45 what ever it's called. She used to have to stand by the record player because she waited for the scratch in the record to skip it.

  • Didnt Del Shannon produce this?

  • A cool version by a white guy. I f you want to hear another Curtis Mayfield composition sung extremely well by white guys check out "Sister Love" on You Tube's " Nuggets from the Liverpool Five ( Part 2)". It's very good.

  • Yeh very soulful... lol

  • haunting - I loved this back in the day and it's wonderful to hear it again, thankyou :D

  • Thanks for this posting. Has anyone have Gypsy Woman by Johnny Lion and the Dancing Jewels??

  • lovely

  • ....I think that Brian Hyland's version of this Impressions 60's soul classic, is simply AWESOME!!! Brian's vocals are truly haunting, as that sail over gorgeous piano chords, & lush, swirling melodies along with those dreamy backing vocals. I could listen to this pop gem 10 times a day!!..."I love you "Gypsy Woman", & we all love Brian Hyland.

  • Brian Hyland´s Gipsy Woman is priceless, I like to hear it on and on...

  • I liked the Impression's version better, but this was good, too.

  • my first slow dance at a school dance at age 12 to this song.

  • one of my favorites.some of these

old songs bring back so many

    memories.thank u all who post

    these.
