The original recording is by the Impressions (featuring Curtis Mayfield -who wrote it). Wasn't easy to find on YouTube but I did. The title just says "Gypsy Woman" but doesn't give the artist. It has a black&white picture of three guys.

I just love how much Brian Hyland grew and developed. That Bikini song of his is just terrible, but by 1970 he was doing songs like this. There is a lot of texture and attention to detail in this song--it is fabulous. Well done, Mr. Hyland!

I have the Impressions original on a CD called The Best of The Tams and The Impressions. There are five each songs to both groups. The first five are the Tams, and the second 5 are The Impression. It's this song that kicks off the Impressions half of the disk.

Recorded in 1970 by Hyland, written by Curtis Mayfield and a hit for him and his group The Impressions 9 years prior. Produced by Del Shannon and I believe he sings back up vocals as well. This recording has never seen the light of day in true stereo--on the original UNI LP and later CD releases the song shows up in mono, surprising because by then even most mono 45s had stereo LP counterparts.

Brian's vocals are truly haunting, as that sail over gorgeous piano chords, & lush, swirling melodies along with those dreamy backing vocals.
