If you look at what type of people are reproducing and having the most children they are very illogical and emotional. They are the people who give into impulse and have unplanned pregnancies, many logical people put off having children until they can afford to take care of them and have very few. If you look at the statistics of birthrates religious people greatly outnumber atheists in the number of children they have per family. Utah is the fastest growing state just because of birth rates.

Eventually I concluded with that I understand why the terrorist believes he was fighting a serious problem and why others believe so aswell. But its his solution to the problem and execution of it that is fucked up. So I agree with u.
i disagree with u about emotion level will ever change because there will always be a certain level of emotion which is important for the human been to survive ans pass his genetics(have children) and that level of emotion will always stays the same
for example if someone had a lack of emotion (fear ) his chance of living is less then the chance of a normal guy
another example is someone who has a lack of the love emotion this person will have less chance to get married and pass his genetics
I disagree with the part about emotions, clearly emotions are all over the place and form the basis of many marketing strategies. Also because women have more influence on society and tend to be more emotional than men. There is even sensitivity training shit going on so I think it's the opposite of what you just said. I prefer a rational and logical view on things, but that's just me. I'm not judging someone on their approach at life, I think when we all stop judging and start respecting other
Dude, some people get really connected to an ideal, which in the case was an ultra-nationalism. Mostly, the biggest influence is the lack of bonds with other people or institutions, in other words, the society. This probably made him develop some passion for a duty, made him hold tight to the only bond he had. This is a sociologic point of view, I hope you understand what I'm writing, cause I'm not used to write this kind of subject in english, as I'm brazilian.
These things should be obvious to everyone and the fact that they are not is exactly what the fuck is wrong with...well... everything. One of the fundamental factors involved in the potential for conscious development is the frequency and level of lucidity which one can achieve when "dreaming" as well as what one chooses to do when in "those" states in order to heighten Lucid capabilities on a consistent basis. Nothing is as confusing as confusion, specially when unaware of being confused.
Different things work differently for different people at different times for different reasons. People and their environment are reflective in nature to one another and onto themselves. Conscious and "subconscious" thought reflect as well as reciprocate onto one another and also simultaneously contradict one another as well as themselves. What was the point of this again? If the person who killed 90+ people in Norway was a Muslim, the Press would have declared him as terrorist. For now though, he is just an 'Assailant ', 'Attacker' (Reuters), 'Gunman' (BBC, CNN & Al Jazeera). Looks like 'Terrorist' is a name reserved for Muslims? The US Dept of State calls it an 'Act of Violence', Not an 'Act of Terrorism'. Share this status and let the world know, hypocrisy is leading us all astray

I don't think emotions change all that much, just like the people they belong too. For example, if we read old stories (like in the Bible, which dates back a couple thousand years) people clearly relate to the people in those stories on an emotional level. Whether or not you believe it's true doesn't matter, because the authors would have to know their emotions to include them in their writing. Also, I read that logical minds function poorly when detached from emotion. This isn't Star Trek.
@nessx007 yup, but I'm not talking about a couple of thousand years, I'm talking about hundreds of thousands; and if you go back that far I doubt you'll recognize much of yourself. ;)
Hundreds of thousands of years ago we were savages, we've come an incredibly long way in civilization until then, but it obviously wasn't because only the brightest or most rational among us passed on their genes.
@Qorumz even if this is a joke (i really hope it is) you do know that the FACT that we have common ancestors doesn't mean we evolved from monkeys, right? Because I guess it's your right to be a religious ignorant, but don't twist science ;)
@DeanLeysen Civilization somehow managed to pull out man's darkest issues. Laughing in nature's face by avoiding natural selection on one side, and going insane on the other. Man it's just an animal who likes to think he's smart. For example this Anders guy. Born in a rich country, lived a normal life, read some books about Vlad and other rulers and he goes postal. AND he's not dead. Maybe when he gets out of prison, he'll have a child. Good job society, good job civilization.
@DeanLeysen Maybe rational people produce less offspring, but are also less likely to die, due to several self-induced causes. Which would explain why rational people are still around. Or possibly, we were a lot more rational before.
We have no idea which direction we're going in, but it doesn't really matter. If we're not gonna evolve into a more long-term and rational thinking species quickly enough, perhaps we're not really worth surviving anyway. And if we are, good for us :P
@DeanLeysen I don't know, the more I think about this, the more it seems we're not going forward or backward. But possibly that's because we can only look at a (too) short time scheme.
@nessx007 You read right, and you got it figured out. I started to become a logical zombie and it was completely miserable, but my friend stepped in and explained why it was happening. Now I can see that I was smart before, but it's like along with the emotional depth something else was unlocked. Now I'm extremely smart. But I don't even think I'm better than anyone else, I just... Well.... Do you know what I mean? Just thought you'd be interested in an anecdote.
@Fishtako12 Yeah I think I gotcha. Strict logic leaves almost no room for anything else (especially things you can't really see or prove, or feelings of purpose), so I could see how that would be pretty miserable indeed! Nice to have good friends around, since it can be really easy to get trapped all up in yourself.
and if you have a close look 95% of the time the guy who does stuff like this is a drugged up fool , often helped out by authorities (underwear bomber)
I would say using music to help process your emotions is very good for someone who's not well in touch with their feelings. e.g. people with a dominant Ti/Te function and an inferior Fi/Fe function.
I don't agree, I believe emotions will become stronger and will go in parallel with out logical thinking, Although I do think logical thinking will control our emotions more so we can get in different states based on moment.
Dean is absolutely right. You know what really bothered me after the Norway shooting, that journalists were talking to so called ''terrorist experts'' and they asked: ''Who could have done this?'' And those ''experts'' immediatly said: ''This looks like the work of muslim extremists, there are numerous reasons why.''
I get that people were trying to have a logical explanation for something that tragic, but to say things like that when nobody knows anything about what happened is just stupid...
while it's true that most humans would agree that killing a 5 year old is wrong, the fact is your only evidence or proof of this, is that the majority of people agree to it.
However the problem with that is, you could ask a TON of questions that the majority of people would find the wrong answer too.
Right and wrong are opinions and are never absolute facts.
Knowing the difference of right and wrong isn't an existing factor, You can say that Killing a newborn baby is wrong, Yet abortion is okay, or that Weed is wrong and that you have the right to tell others they can't smoke it, but the fact is what is "right" and "wrong" is simply a matter of opinion.
what you classify is "right" can only be backed up by the OPINION'S of other people.
@MoonLover456 He's from Belgium, some people speak french there, pretty much the south part, and the upper part speaks dutch. I believe I've heard him speak dutch before, and it sounded genuine, so I guess he's from the north of Belgium to be exact :)
@Echodonut the dutch language is part way responsible for the intricacies and uniqueness of the australian accent so i'll have to thank him for how i speak.
@origamishishou Then thank me too, for I am dutch myself :D By the way, I did not know this, and I think it's awesome. Can you give an example, because the only thing I know about the australian language/accent is that they say 'shrimps on the barbie' :p
@Echodonut that's awesome. dutch pronounciation has also affected the english of people from africa too. i can't think of any of them off the top of my head cos i'm about to go to sleep but i will say one thing. australians actually call shrimp prawns. the shrimp on the barbie was from an ad made to bring in tourists. paul hogan said shrimp on the barbie because the ad was aimed at countries who say shrimp ☺. also dipthongs are what aussie accent's borrowed. i'd explain but i've run out of words
@ThePassiveWatcher I don't get it... What big words did he use? None of his words strike me as being especially long or rare. All he's doing is using words that might be outside of your limited vocabulary.
@zliqah one reason that you might be hungry all the time is because you have ate at cetain times a day and your body gets used to that and in turn if you do not eat at those times you will feel hungry. or you could have an eating disorder but the first reason is probly it
Questions eh, is taxation moral? Barring in mind the Standford prison experiment and the Milgram authority experiment, can any current society claim to be moral?
(for anyone who doesn't know, both of these experiments are easily found on youtube). I'm interested in anyones take on authority and it's effect on human psychology, in my opinion the simple answer is no, there is no moral society in existence today but we might be heading that way.
@DeanLeysen Hmm that is a good question though, I automatically assumed that you quit WoW quite a while ago, But that still raises the question what are you playing now?
while technically it is possible that you've decided all video games are boring and that you'd much rather spend your time...........
so yeah which video game are you playing now? particularly anything online? :P
@DeanLeysen hey dean check out "this is your brain on music" by daniel levitin its a really good book and goes in depth on how music affects the brain and thought processes
Diminishing emotions over time.. Sounds like a selection pressure in the making. As you know emotions trigger neurotransmitters and hormones that we have always needed to survive, probably most importantly to procreate. I don't think being super dedicated to important issues spawned happy family life or well nurtured children, and by diminishing emotions I think that's where more people are likely to end up. Like autistic people, they're useful for the human race but not if we're all autistic.
Why are their some people who can never really settle down in a relationship. Rather they have sex, have some fun and move on without really intending on making it last. You never see these kinds of people longer then 3 months with someone. Such people might be called "Players". And I'd like to make this question more focused on the female sex. Where as it's obvious why males might like to jump around from girl to girl/relationship to relationship(i.e. drive to reproduce) Why do women do it?
If you are interested in the state of AI research, I recommend reading up on the topics of heuristic algorithms, evolutionary computing and neural networks. The wiki articles on those topics are quite good, although a bit technical and maybe difficult to get into for someone not too familiar with the topic of computer science. If you are more interested in the topic of AI in general I would recommend starting with its wiki article (wikipedia*org/wiki/AI). Or simply wait for Dean to answer it XD
We have been able to simulate some behavior, that may appear to be intelligent, but in essence it's not. Most attempts were either based on very complex rule sets (which is only a very small part of intelligence) and the few attempts that were done with neural networks (that try to recreate the processes going on in the human brain) were on a very small scale.
We don't even fully understand our own brains yet and therefore aren't very successful at replicating them.
furious you look like guetta :)

If we become too emotional then we will be like animals

@DeanLeysen Yep, we took control of our evolution.
shishiromura 7 months ago
@DeanLeysen Civilization somehow managed to pull out man's darkest issues. Laughing in nature's face by avoiding natural selection on one side, and going insane on the other. Man it's just an animal who likes to think he's smart. For example this Anders guy. Born in a rich country, lived a normal life, read some books about Vlad and other rulers and he goes postal. AND he's not dead. Maybe when he gets out of prison, he'll have a child. Good job society, good job civilization.
RomanuDeRand 7 months ago
@DeanLeysen Maybe rational people produce less offspring, but are also less likely to die, due to several self-induced causes. Which would explain why rational people are still around. Or possibly, we were a lot more rational before.
We have no idea which direction we're going in, but it doesn't really matter. If we're not gonna evolve into a more long-term and rational thinking species quickly enough, perhaps we're not really worth surviving anyway. And if we are, good for us :P
Inferno957841236 6 months ago
@DeanLeysen I don't know, the more I think about this, the more it seems we're not going forward or backward. But possibly that's because we can only look at a (too) short time scheme.
Inferno957841236 6 months ago
@TheMadzab It's not as simple as that.

Fishtako12 6 months ago
@Fishtako12 Yeah I think I gotcha. Strict logic leaves almost no room for anything else (especially things you can't really see or prove, or feelings of purpose), so I could see how that would be pretty miserable indeed! Nice to have good friends around, since it can be really easy to get trapped all up in yourself.

Another question why did you stop playing the World of Warcraft ?
jakub8614 7 months ago
Dean is absolutely right. You know what really bothered me after the Norway shooting, that journalists were talking to so called ''terrorist experts'' and they asked: ''Who could have done this?'' And those ''experts'' immediatly said: ''This looks like the work of muslim extremists, there are numerous reasons why.''
I get that people were trying to have a logical explanation for something that tragic, but to say things like that when nobody knows anything about what happened is just stupid...

What about the fact that a lot of sad music is instrumental. What of those songs?

while it's true that most humans would agree that killing a 5 year old is wrong, the fact is your only evidence or proof of this, is that the majority of people agree to it.

@Echodonut aww nice my parents wanted to move to belgium when i was a kid but they didnt so im still in a hot place lol

MoonLover456 7 months ago
@Echodonut the dutch language is part way responsible for the intricacies and uniqueness of the australian accent so i'll have to thank him for how i speak.
origamishishou 7 months ago
@origamishishou Then thank me too, for I am dutch myself :D By the way, I did not know this, and I think it's awesome. Can you give an example, because the only thing I know about the australian language/accent is that they say 'shrimps on the barbie' :p
Echodonut 7 months ago

All he's doing is using words that might be outside of your limited vocabulary.

why i'm hungry all the time ?
zliqah 7 months ago 2

How does Artificial Intelligence work?
TheAlecMcleod 7 months ago 2
If you are interested in the state of AI research, I recommend reading up on the topics of heuristic algorithms, evolutionary computing and neural networks. The wiki articles on those topics are quite good, although a bit technical and maybe difficult to get into for someone not too familiar with the topic of computer science. If you are more interested in the topic of AI in general I would recommend starting with its wiki article (wikipedia*org/wiki/AI). Or simply wait for Dean to answer it XD
TheBigOne0305 7 months ago
So far, it doesn't XD
We have been able to simulate some behavior, that may appear to be intelligent, but in essence it's not. Most attempts were either based on very complex rule sets (which is only a very small part of intelligence) and the few attempts that were done with neural networks (that try to recreate the processes going on in the human brain) were on a very small scale.
We don't even fully understand our own brains yet and therefore aren't very successful at replicating them.
TheBigOne0305 7 months ago
@TheAlecMcleod those two comments should have been in the reversed order XD
