It's hard to believe that this was just three years ago. As much as Safina was criticized for being such a mental mess, it's very sad to see that she may be on the brink of retirement because of a bad back. I remember seeing her at the 2010 AO and just being in so much pain, and I felt so bad for her. I hope she can come back but more importantly, I hope she lead a healthy life. You never want to see someone limp or hobble away from the sport they gave so much to.

@cruz111 I may be getting this match and the '07 Sharapova beatdown confused because they both were so quick, lol, but if I remember correctly, this one was just under an hour, like 58 or 59 minutes and the Sharapova final was just over an hour at 1 hour 3 minutes.
losing finals like this really brought dinara's confidence down. and then there was that major blow in the wimbledon SF against venus where she lost 61 60. and then the worst one, the us open, where she lost to kvitova. since the us, i don't think she's played one good match. and now she's losing to much lower players on the tour, like at rg10 where she lost to an injured 39 year old :L

But Navratilova has even said that considering today's racket technology and power, no one can stand up against these players. Like I said before, different era altogether. Graff and the like really never had to contend with people who could be as athletic or hit as hard as they did until the latter stages of their careers. tennis pros from back in the day have openly admitted that the game nowadays has changed since back then. it has become ALOT more faster and ALOT more crazier. the definition of a tennis Legend differs in many people's opinion. the williams sisters have been THE MOST successful players for almost the past decade. they have had their ups and down, but they always seemed to rise to the occasion staying in the top ten rankings. whether that makes them a legend or not differs on the opinion of fans.
They really were great players, and I think the only reason they don't seem as good was because they weren't as powerful... then again, there was no need back then to be so powerful, until Lindsay and the Williams came along. Now the women are BIG.

Safina's serves is so mechanical and manufactured, like she has to really think about it beforehand. Serena's on the other has is technically perfect almost. Richard Williams is a genius I tell you.
Serena's forehand has been pretty solid the last few years. Look at it in her last four slam finals that she's won, 07' Aus, 08' USO, 09' Aus and 09 Wimbly. rock solid
Serena's forehand is a weapon when she's feeling confident and hitting through the ball. Serena is often feeling her most confident when she gets to the finals of majors. But look at her performances in the other tournaments, and that's often the shot that lets her down. And I will make the argument that her forehand wasn't really that solid in the 2008 US Open final. It was part of the reason why Jankovic had 4 set points in the second set.
Serena said she is targeting a second 'Serena Slam' in 2009.
