  • I was gonna kill myself, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

  • Listen to this and then to "Almost Blue" - similarities, yes?

  • At 0:47 he went out of tune--just when i was ready to jump.

  • No, no no...check out Marianna with her New Modern Criminals version...crazy cool

  • Check out Bjork's version of this song.

  • @spongebobnik that would certainly make me kill myself *gagging noise*

  • my favourite version

  • I loved the film, I love the song, and I love Elvis Costello

  • who else would do this song and psycho at a charity show - then again 1981 elvis at his most brilliantly depressed best

  • gOoSeBuMpsssssssssssssss

  • Marianna does a much better version.....Marianna - Gloomy Sunday..

    ah yeah

  • This song was banned by the Pope.

  • dobre

  • elvis, you r sad we all are at time

  • its true sad, but we r a sprinkling fangroup newer think of it please meet us.

  • This is a really good rendition but god this song gets passed around like 10 dollar whore. Enough people, go cover something else... no one will ever be able to even approach the emotional breadth of the original. All these pampered celebrities feigning an affected depression, it just reeks of ostentatious self absorption. People are tripping over themselves to get on the bandwagon. At least this version is just him and the guitar, this song needs to be approached honestly.

  • m'agrada així, tan cutre i tan autèntic alhora

  • That was the most impacting version i hve heard

  • @franticdisembowlment please ! try serge gainsbourg's version !

  • The song must be sing in magyarul.

If you want the true ... feling

  • So good listening to him after so many years and memories he has a class of his own ...nicely done

  • Thanks Dean, you are so right, EC is definately in a class of his own. I love his songs.

    Thanks for posting Lpstd1 5****.

  • Mouahahah. Yes indeed Bob...had to, couldn't wait.

  • Does anyone know or can anyone guess the chords he's playing ?

  • do it yourself you lazy bastard!

  • I could ask him?

  • Well thats cheered me up no end.

  • the best version is that of Diamanda Galas, without any hint of doubt

  • I disagree, I hate her voice so it seems. I checked out Diamanda after I read your comment, and I disliked her version. However I love this version, I wish there was a clearer quality of it, alot of static noise.

  • I really think Mr. Costello's voice suits this song best for me. There are some decent versions of it, but I just LOVE his voice and this song-both are perfect.

  • This isn't the original version. The original version is: Rezso Seress - szomorú vasárnap <- search it

  • Wonderful version. Love it!

  • i like this song a revive version,...

  • Im really glad I learned to play this song prior to memorizing elvis or billie's tone.. although theyre both awesome performances, theres a way to sing the song a lot bluesier.. I find the dreaming part fucked up too lol.. the guitaring sounds gross in some parts though..just like in this version.. but I guess hella tight, still lol

  • his voice is good, but it sounds much more sorrowful on piano then guitar

  • I saw this years ago.

What a treat to find it after so long.

I couldn't dissagree more with those who somehow think that Elvis doesn't capture the essence of the lyric.

He really captures the darkness & melancholy for me.

  • wonderful

  • I like the version Elvis does with Marian McPartland better on "Piano Jazz: McPartland/Costello". A fabulous CD, by the way.

  • the best version is the original, the hungarian one! original title: szomorú vasárnap

  • Quite true, but as far as the English version goes, I think he captures the mood of the song best, even better than Billie Holliday.

  • I personally feel Björk did the best even though she too put on that pathetic ending. I find Billie's voice a bit irritating to be honest. Just the timbre of it is kinda squaky or something dunno. and I wish this version had better audio clarity.

  • @troyka14 Assuming maybe that one speaks Hungarian! Besides, I've read those lyrics translated and prefer this version to it. Nice tune, though.

  • he doesn't make this song sad at all. his version isn't all that great. you can go ahead and criticize me if you desire, but it wont change the fact that his version is lame.

  • im with you.

  • considering what the lyrics actually portray and say, i dont think this rendition serves the song justice..

  • Amazing Elvis..This song induced suicides

  • This is my favorite version of Gloomy Sunday!

I've been looking for this version everywhere. I had it burnt on a CD but I couldn't remember for the life of me who sang the version I had. This is amazing.

His voice and guitar are haunting.

  • This is a great version of Gloomy Sunday. Though, I think the best version is the one done by Venetian Snares which uses the Hungarian title of Öngyilkos Vasárnap. Very much worth listening to, along with the rest of the album it is from (Rossz Csillag Alatt Született).

  • He should have left the gay ass "oh my lord twas only a dream!!! For joy!"-part out. There's a sad tale behind this poem/song, and sweetening it up hollywood-style doesn't serve it justice.

  • Its just some guy who had a failed music career, so his girl broke up with him. He then channelled his sadness and wrote this song.

(Both he and his ex are among the 100 people whose deaths have been attributed to this song

  • I agree, the "oh it was a dream" part spoils the song. What's wrong with it having a sad ending? That's the point of the song!

  • Amazing version but for me, the Associates (Billy Mackenzie)

    version is still the best.

  • imperial bedroom is one of the best records in the history - you agree

  • Absolutely!!!

I would find it hard to pick a favourite Elvis Costello album

though as 'This Years Model', 'Get Happy', 'Punch The Clock' and 'Armed Forces' (amongst others) are all classics too.

  • Even better than Billy Mackenzie's version.

  • When was this made? What is it from?

  • Elvis performed this at a charity concert for the mentally handicapped called Fundamental Frollicks in 1981.

He also did psycho as a rousing finish !!!

  • Breathtaking, amazing performance!!! And what a voice!!! Thank you so much, Lpstd1!

  • Absolutely amazing song.. However, Diamanda Galas sung the closest version to the original.

  • I jumped out the window of my apartment when i heard this song. Luckily I live on the first floor.

  • ha ha!

  • slowparker,

Absolutely hilarious comment! I wish I'd said that.

Seriously though, for such a seemingly simple song it sure does carry a lot of punch, eh?

    The original is really excellent!

  • @slowparker hahah u funny!!

  • @slowparker Oh dude my boyfriend showed me the song today and was telling me about how the ong actually killed people and I was like "Woah! Are you serious?"

  • He put the "happy" coda on it....

  • I have 27 versions of this song, but Elvis Costello's (studio) version is actually my favourite! Maybe alongside Sarah McLachlan's. Check out Heather Nova and Billie Holiday as well - great renditions!

  • Great cover!

This is a Hungarian song originally, by Seres Rezső.

  • re-written by cole porter...

  • Agree'd, but. I'm quite sad, though, that because of Billie Holiday having to change the lyrics, that the mainstream version continues to be this new (Billie Holiday-ish new) version of it being only a dream.

The original version cuts deep into the soul.

  • What lyrics were changed? I wanna do a version of this song

  • Xiany1 was right. The ending's different. For a moar accurate version. Look at Diamanda Galas. Or, if you know hungarian, you can search up the original... good luck there.

  • Thanks, I'll check Galas' version. My Hungarian isn't what it used to be.

  • the song is like a knife

  • for that idiot who doesn't like the song...THE VIDEO IF U REALISED IS VERY OLD !!!!! LOOSER... he translated the original song ...if u don't like it...loose it

  • "cheeriest song ever" lol

  • Maganda naman a,, ayus nga e!! mga bulok!!

  • the song would be a silly urban legend, except.... it's so powerful, eerie, seductive. Not to be listened to on a Sunday.

  • what a great version!!!!! =)

  • oh my god... this song is so good its painful...

  • this song is beautiful, but dangerous

  • Fantastic song, brilliant performance. This is an originally Hungarian song....

  • Wonderful, I have the extended Trust album, wich features this song, but never saw it live before.

    Thanks for sharing!
