EXACTLY!! As is Dessay, Deutekom, Moser, etc. While I adore Edita, her Queen is not my favorite. I posted this as a rare and early excerpt or her singing.
Truly a historical singer for Mozart! I am so glad she is giving a recital in Paris in December, a few days after Natalie Dessay sings in the same theater.
Being a high coloratura she should actually sing this Aria with easiness. But one hardly hears the F's, and the D's are strained! Zerbinetta , Königin ARE her repertory!! There is nothing to be astonished about! What else should she sing? I prefer to hear drammatic coloraturas in this role, like Damrau! Minus 5
clearly you are not familiar with gruberova.......her range is much much geater than damrau......strained? can you even sing. Gruberova has perfect technique and control. you need to study a little more.
True, and we mustn't forget that in those days a lot more people were educated in music, especially singing, it was part of their education. So there was more choice of singers, hence more competition, hence a more talented top layer of singers than today. Though they didn't travel all that much.
now, im totally sure that at least one person will give this comment a "-" but i got to say this. Gruberova IS a really great singer with great skills but have you listened closely? I mean to me it seems like her voice comes out with difficulty...and some times this makes her even go out of tempo (especially in high notes)and there's almost no vibrato..While Dessay sings this aria with great ease and has a really "obedient" voice and she can reach with ease the most high note in opera, the f6.
well i think for anyone vibrato is going to be very difficult to achieve up that high. and the difficulty from listening closely...i mean, opera is hard no matter what range your voice is in. as a mezzo soprano, i work very hard, so i can't imagine how hard gruberova has to work to make her voice go that high. it takes so much stamina to be able to actually hit that high. as for dessay, although she sings with ease, it's because she doesn't sing with the fiery passion qotn is supposed to have.
yes, you are absolutely right about this. But don't forget that even though it's hard for a mezzo soprano to reach high notes, gruberova is a coloratura! she OUGHT to reach high notes...all im saying is that i think dessay is better than gruberova...maybe it doesnt depend on their skills at all...maybe its just a fact of having different voices...and i prefer how dessay's voice sounds.
My last comments were made 3 months ago so i can tell you that since then i've seen a lot of grube's work. And from some performances like "the bell song" (which requires an amazing skill) Grube was absolutely astonishing (and it was live too) but you have to admit that on one thing i was right: Dessay really has a more obedient voice and she reaches the notes with no delay ...and on top of that, i was just stating my opinion before, so please dont lower your level and insult people like you did
After listening to Damrau, I preffer Gruberova, Queen of the night has to be evil, but a kind of cold and BEAUTIFUL evil, Damrau screams all the time and has no sense of rithm, Damrau doesn't know how to use her expresive tools, she's just thinking about being evil, but i miss an evil more clever, one who can look like an angel SOMETIMES. Damrau high notes sounds almost like folrence foster, evil would sound and look perfect, COLD, and beautiful; just like Gruberova!
You have a point, because in DIE ZAUBERFLUTE characters don't know who is really the evil one until maybe the second act. In this aria Queen of the night is talking to her daughter; she can't looks "totally" evil, even when she's trying to convince her to do something evil (kill Sarastro).
i agree with you at some points... however, you have to admit that Damrau masters the piece better, from the technique point of view... Damrau's interpretation is very... "fresh".... she uses a very good vibrato, a different one from the vibratos used in romantic operas... I like very much Gruberova, but I am fascinated by Damrau.
Remember please, that most of great artist BUILD on or from the achievements of the previous generation, in order to overcome them and expand the horizon of technical and creative possibilities.
20 years from now there will be again someone better than Ms. Dramau. It calls progress. This is life.
Can't agree more, and that's why i don't understand why some people just don't want to admit that Sutherland's coloratura is more mature than Callas', not that I deny Callas' talent or anything, it's just, like you said, PROGRESS.
Oh please... just get over it. there are billions of people in this world... and someone has to be better or faster or slower or higher or whatever things than others. It is called "no, not everything will be given to one person". BASTA!
It's also easier to have a better vibrato and sing the aria easier when the language the song is written in is you native language (i.e. German and Diana Damrau).
Maria Callas nunca ha cantado esta aria. En muchos lugares pone que esa grabación tan conocida es de Maria Callas pero en realidad es de Lucia Popp esa voz. Y considero que Lucia Popp ha sido la mejor cantante de Opera
She used to be a great Queen of the Night. The recording is of bad quality. She sings correctly. High F´s are of different quality of sound, and the microphone could not take them perfectly. She is a DIVA, perhaps better in Rigoletto. Costumes cannot be evaluated through this video, but are not modern costumes, of course. She has been Semiramide, Violetta, and recentrly, NORMA. Love to her!!!

She has gorgeous voice and this is an exquisite rendition of the aria...the only criticism that I have is that the 16th's aren't clean, as jrbrook76 stated previously (and of course that the costume is completely obnoxious lol).

does anyone know...
When Mozart wrote this, did he have a very talented someone in mind to sing it?
Did the TransSiberian Orchestra come up with the piano part that's so signature of their song kind of based on this?
very good perfarmance, and anyone who can perform it well enough not to torture people has some talent.

Mozart wrote this for his sister-in-law Maria Josepha (Weber) Hofer. Those Weber girls sure could sing!
