  • Does she has an error of coloratura on 1.04?

  • I loveeeeeeeeee!

  • i like the costume. It reminds me of something...

  • I wish the audio was not delayed.

  • I don't like the wobble / pulsation in the voice. Sorry :-(

  • @Wildepianist the vibrato or something else?

  • @Wildepianist the vibrato?

  • she's real Queen of Night, not much, in fact only very few singers can sing this without obvious efforts, Edita Gruberova is fantastic!

  • the best coloratura since Sutherland

  • Amazing. A definite natural in the art of coloratura.

  • Amazing. A definite natural in the art of collortura.

  • do you have the first aria?

  • unfortunately no. This was all that was on the DVD.

  • @operadude32 which dvd?

  • I really do love this woman--she gives so much character and musicality to her performances. Brava--!

  • I prefer Diana Damrau, either like actress than singer

  • Why must it be either/or? They are both brilliant.

  • EXACTLY!! As is Dessay, Deutekom, Moser, etc. While I adore Edita, her Queen is not my favorite. I posted this as a rare and early excerpt or her singing.

  • Truly a historical singer for Mozart! I am so glad she is giving a recital in Paris in December, a few days after Natalie Dessay sings in the same theater.

  • Remember experts, this is all only a matter of opinion. But Gruberova stood to close to the the Good Will collection box I feel.

  • Let's say the costumer stood to close to the Good Will box.

  • is she czech?

  • No way :-) Slovak, the one and only Edita Gruberova :-)

  • The one and onyl: Edita Gruberova

  • wow what a voice

  • sie ist ein wunder!

  • amazing :)

  • That outfit is so ugly.

  • but she is a good singer.

  • I know. I favorited it despite of her awkward costume.

  • good but a lot on intonation moment's

  • unbelievable!! flawless!!

  • Being a high coloratura she should actually sing this Aria with easiness. But one hardly hears the F's, and the D's are strained! Zerbinetta , Königin ARE her repertory!! There is nothing to be astonished about! What else should she sing? I prefer to hear drammatic coloraturas in this role, like Damrau! Minus 5

  • Watch the video again and listen more closely...the quality of the recording is quite poor - no fault of Ms. Gruberovas.

  • clearly you are not familiar with gruberova.......her range is much much geater than damrau......strained? can you even sing. Gruberova has perfect technique and control. you need to study a little more.

  • how can I download this video please?

  • install an add-on of Firefox and you can download it

  • does anyone know...

When Mozart wrote this, did he have a very talented someone in mind to sing it?

Did the TransSiberian Orchestra come up with the piano part that's so signature of their song kind of based on this?

very good perfarmance, and anyone who can perform it well enough not to torture people has some talent.

  • Mozart wrote this for his sister-in-law Maria Josepha (Weber) Hofer. Those Weber girls sure could sing!

    Dont know about TSO.

  • True, and we mustn't forget that in those days a lot more people were educated in music, especially singing, it was part of their education. So there was more choice of singers, hence more competition, hence a more talented top layer of singers than today. Though they didn't travel all that much.

    Isn't she wonderful...

  • Diana Damrau hits this the BEST of anyone I've ever heard try to perform this VERY difficult and amazing aria...

  • now, im totally sure that at least one person will give this comment a "-" but i got to say this. Gruberova IS a really great singer with great skills but have you listened closely? I mean to me it seems like her voice comes out with difficulty...and some times this makes her even go out of tempo (especially in high notes)and there's almost no vibrato..While Dessay sings this aria with great ease and has a really "obedient" voice and she can reach with ease the most high note in opera, the f6.

  • well i think for anyone vibrato is going to be very difficult to achieve up that high. and the difficulty from listening closely...i mean, opera is hard no matter what range your voice is in. as a mezzo soprano, i work very hard, so i can't imagine how hard gruberova has to work to make her voice go that high. it takes so much stamina to be able to actually hit that high. as for dessay, although she sings with ease, it's because she doesn't sing with the fiery passion qotn is supposed to have.

  • yes, you are absolutely right about this. But don't forget that even though it's hard for a mezzo soprano to reach high notes, gruberova is a coloratura! she OUGHT to reach high notes...all im saying is that i think dessay is better than gruberova...maybe it doesnt depend on their skills at all...maybe its just a fact of having different voices...and i prefer how dessay's voice sounds.

  • have you had the chance to listen Gruberova's Zerbinetta? it's superb. she hits high f# twice, and very convincingly!

  • watch more gruberova videos.....

  • My last comments were made 3 months ago so i can tell you that since then i've seen a lot of grube's work. And from some performances like "the bell song" (which requires an amazing skill) Grube was absolutely astonishing (and it was live too) but you have to admit that on one thing i was right: Dessay really has a more obedient voice and she reaches the notes with no delay ...and on top of that, i was just stating my opinion before, so please dont lower your level and insult people like you did

  • Simply one of the best singers of thepast century! Thank You!

  • and who is the best singer nowadays in ur opinion?

  • Nowadays we have maaany great singers...but I prefer Cecilia Bartoli and Juan Diego Flórez ^^

  • Love it.. ahahahahahahahaha!! :D

  • fantastic tonal clarity... like Popp come alive (even better perhaps)!

  • wow. i have great respect for anyone who can sing like that.

  • Well, thats not that many actually.

  • whats up with the staging?

    it just looks so strange

  • Edita Gruberova's soprano is wonderful.

she was born to be Queen of the Night,I think.

    I'm not good at english.

    I don't like English.

  • I don't like English either, but I can speak it, so why not...

  • great costume

  • plus ou moins...

  • I think Popp's is the best. I don't think this is that bad, I am sure it has been done worse. I do believe Popp is Pamina in this performance.

  • I take that back I think they were in 83's together.

  • :-)

  • Gruberova has excellent control over her high notes, they seems so easy for her! Not many sopranos could sing those F6s as easily as she does.

  • Wow... listen to those high notes! Pretty darn good!!!

  • She looks like theat laddy from 100 dalmations. Crualla Deville.

  • lol...she looks almost egyptian

  • I would gladly give both my arms to be able to sing that song!!

  • la migliore per me é Luciana Serra...

  • Too hooty. Listen to Miliza Korjus

  • Bitchin costume!!!

  • Truly BITCHIN! :D

  • Wow... those are some pipes!

  • ESCUCHEN A LA DEUTEKOM

  • After listening to Damrau, I preffer Gruberova, Queen of the night has to be evil, but a kind of cold and BEAUTIFUL evil, Damrau screams all the time and has no sense of rithm, Damrau doesn't know how to use her expresive tools, she's just thinking about being evil, but i miss an evil more clever, one who can look like an angel SOMETIMES. Damrau high notes sounds almost like folrence foster, evil would sound and look perfect, COLD, and beautiful; just like Gruberova!

  • You have a point, because in DIE ZAUBERFLUTE characters don't know who is really the evil one until maybe the second act. In this aria Queen of the night is talking to her daughter; she can't looks "totally" evil, even when she's trying to convince her to do something evil (kill Sarastro).

  • i agree with you at some points... however, you have to admit that Damrau masters the piece better, from the technique point of view... Damrau's interpretation is very... "fresh".... she uses a very good vibrato, a different one from the vibratos used in romantic operas... I like very much Gruberova, but I am fascinated by Damrau.

  • Remember please, that most of great artist BUILD on or from the achievements of the previous generation, in order to overcome them and expand the horizon of technical and creative possibilities.

20 years from now there will be again someone better than Ms. Dramau. It calls progress. This is life.

  • Can't agree more, and that's why i don't understand why some people just don't want to admit that Sutherland's coloratura is more mature than Callas', not that I deny Callas' talent or anything, it's just, like you said, PROGRESS.

  • Oh please... just get over it. there are billions of people in this world... and someone has to be better or faster or slower or higher or whatever things than others. It is called "no, not everything will be given to one person". BASTA!

  • I PREFER GRUBEROVA ANYWAY

  • It's also easier to have a better vibrato and sing the aria easier when the language the song is written in is you native language (i.e. German and Diana Damrau).

  • canta mejor tmb XD

  • This suits her MUCH better than the Callas repertoire.

  • right bitches, she is a fine collratura. I like, this was like hitting a juke box and looking for a fave tune. Shame about the sudden end!

  • She looks like that Murder She Wrote woman

  • Angela Lansbury...you're right!

  • yea true

  • With great pleasure!!!

  • Well, she gives it a good shot but I've yet to hear the power it takes to make this role work.

  • well then you need to hear the recording done in the early 60s starring roberta peters as the queen. She is best queen i've heard hands down

  • Oooh. Will you post that?

  • Better than Lucia Popp?

  • Fantastic!(cyranothe2nd this record is from 1981!May be this lady was one the model of many singers on the scene)

  • Man I love this aria. It always amazes me how they can hit those really high notes with such clarity.

  • She used to be a great Queen of the Night. The recording is of bad quality. She sings correctly. High F´s are of different quality of sound, and the microphone could not take them perfectly. She is a DIVA, perhaps better in Rigoletto. Costumes cannot be evaluated through this video, but are not modern costumes, of course. She has been Semiramide, Violetta, and recentrly, NORMA. Love to her!!!

  • Diana Damrau is the best I've ever seen on youtube.

  • Diana Damrau was incredible, I have to agree, but I wouldn't say best on youtube because I haven't seen tham all.

  • I think Natalie Dessay's is better-more fluid over the top notes.

  • Yep... But she lakes of power and presence. The queen of the night is not a role for her I think.

  • the best ever..I love her voice very very much..

  • what on earth is she wearing??

  • I guess they wanted it to seem more Egyptian than the traditional Queen of the Night costume.

  • It's a good idea but it seems that their costumer was out of their mind at the time.

    uk dot youtube dot /watch?v=urgANx5WV8E

  • well i'm pretty sure i've heard this before, just not by her. she's amazing! brava!

  • Piercing! Brava!!

  • Esta cantando en playback? Parece...

  • she has such a great voice, it's so pure and strong! =)

  • not really into this music, but i like it. Like the costume.

  • great job on one of my favortie songs...but i think i have heard her and others sing it a lil better....and the costume? i just finished puking

  • She looks like a character from Beauty and the Beast where the objects come alive. I'd say she'd be a peice of a wall.

  • NO! she's queen Amidala! HAHAHA

  • She's great, but the costume stinks. That german boy singing though is the best even without a costume.

  • The best Ive heard other than Serra I think thats her name. This is fabulous too.

  • Lol I like that boy singing The Magic Flute best!

  • See pharaohchnaq's vids u'll find it.That lid is awesome I'm so jealous of him.I'm a girl and I never did sing like that!See it!

  • She has gorgeous voice and this is an exquisite rendition of the aria...the only criticism that I have is that the 16th's aren't clean, as jrbrook76 stated previously (and of course that the costume is completely obnoxious lol).

  • The best voice for this aria. But I think someone got fired from the wardrobe department after this production.

  • beautifull.

  • It was okay, but have heard better. Doesn't sound like she practiced the intervals in the 16th notes slow enough. The high notes are nicely executed...but some of the 16ths leading into them are sloppy.

  • Wonderful

  • excellent

  • No one can sing this aria like Gruberova.

  • how on earth does she hit those notes? it's amazing!

  • what's voice,strong !!!

  • awsome woman awson voice!!!

  • Echt geil!

  • BEAUTIFUL! that was amazing

  • What's the deal with the costume?

    She's just awesome!

  • PHENOMENAL!

  • Ok, very competent performance
