@skechmasters Oscars are pissy fish, regardless of the environment. They're smart, but no matter what you do they are very territorial and strong and even if you're the one who feeds them, they will put on their aggressive little shows when you walk by the tank or whatever. Mine used to break decorations in her tank and had no problems with jumping up to get food from my hand.
@dinger454 I thought Oscars were happier alone because that is they way they live in the wild. they have a few feet of territory and attack anything that comes into it. And to find a mate, that is the odds of it being the opposite sex. I have been doing a lot of reading and it sounds like they are happier alone.
@teresamccann I kept Oscars for many years during the 90's and at one stage had 11 breeding pairs. I also ran the uk Oscar club and was constantly asked about the behaviour of Oscars kept alone which was clearly not the same as those kept in pairs or groups. Now im not the worlds leading authority on Oscars but i know enough to have made 2 dvd's about Oscars and its my opinion that they should be kept with other Oscars. message me and ill give you my Oscar web address
@dinger454 I will. This is my first Oscar and 1st fish. I have been reading stuff Ron Coleman and expert cichlid researcher posted. He was the one that said they prefer living alone. I figured I should site my source since I am new to Oscars. Ron is a Assistant Professor at the California State University, Sacramento in the Department of Biological Sciences. He runs Cichlid Research Home Page. I will message you, I would love to learn more. :)
@caliburn0911 My Oscar does not but it is still very little. It used to try to swim into my mouth. Now I can even pretend to bite at it and it does not care, just keeps begging for food. But it does try to stay at my eye level. So when I am inspecting its tank (gravel) it is usually swimming right in my line of sight and stopping right in front of my face.
depending the way you think about it. I am getting a 125gallon tank with a stand for $400. It will house my Alligator Gar, 3 Oscars, and possibly a Fire Eel or a Sting Ray(both are some what expensive). The tank is a glass tank which is still kind of expensive if brand new but Acrylic(plastic) tanks that size are over $1000
then get a bigger tank im not tryna flame you or sumtin but cant u atleast find sumwhere to put them when they grow putting them down would be ashame post on websites when they atleast5 inches
dude, my 125gallon is 6 feet long. I will go to local fish stores and ask them about it and see if they can do anything like put adds up for me or even buy it from me. Once it is about 2-2.5 feet long it will have to go.
I think the oscar is trying to bite because she is taunting him/her. and w=henever an oscar opens its mouth it is comparing mouth size to fight. If it has a smaller mouth it will run away.
So many comments about how it's not good for the fish. My oscar is now 5 years old, beautiful, a good 14 inches long and healthy as can be. Cichlids are smart enough not to beat themselves silly on the glass. All you hippy whiners that post about it being bad for him, what are you doing watching this vid? Go watch some guy hump a tree. All those who posted and love my "Homer", tyvm, he's a great fish and we love the beast. We don't get him that worked up anymore as he's in a community tank
I do like them. I love them actually. They fight so hard that it gives me a rush. I wish I could have a tank to keep some of the many species of fish I catch there. I caught a very nice Tilapia the other day. It was 8 1/2 inches. I do not eat them or any freshwater fish I catch. I hear Oscars are tasty but I won't kill it. They are better to me alive.
Thanks for the video response. I hope our videos get more views because of it. Stay tuned for new Oscar vids next week.
That's a good 12-14 inch fish. The biggest I have caught is 12 inches. How I would live to hook that fish you got there! I am sure he will take me for a ride. Check my Oscar fishing vids out. I bring justice to this bully fish with my rod!!!
Dude, thats not good. The oscar could seriously injure himself slamming into the tank glass like that. You should tell your girlfriend to stop teasing him.
the FRIGGIN moment I saw the video, I immediately thought to myself that there will be some sissy-know-it-all that will post THIS exact message, so predictable...
stop bugging the oscar, when oscars are at that stage in there lifes(reaching sexual maturity) there are more agressive and sticking your face at the galss will piss them off.and lolz989 dont give oscars live food and if you do not very often its to much protine
Yes pretty much. Pellets, Freeze dried and frozen diets are best. Though a few feeders once in a while as a "treat" is fine and seemingly healthy. Though this should be something done *sparingly* to avoid disease and train the Oscar not to eat much smaller tankmates.
That is the coolest Oscar I've seen. Attitude and Looks. I've got a baby oscar at the moment - not sure how old exactly - only a few months I think (its about 1.75-2.00 inches) - cant wait till mine gets a bit bigger; and I can only dream that it will turn out as beautiful as yours. Well done!
He's always that color. Hikari goes a long way I guess. yeah, he freakin' hates her :) He'll have to get used to her though as I just married her last weekend ;)
In the video he's about 10" and a year old, now he's a year and a half or so and a little over 12"...bigger tank now :) He's in a 55G there but has the 75 now.
He looks so mad, its funny. You can actually hear the bubbles and water splash from his movements, lol.I am not much of a fish person but having one like him would be entertaining.
Your Oscar is gorgeous. His jaw almost locks like a kissing Gourami. I have 4 red belly Pacu and they lost their color, however the Redtail Barb is still very red. I think it is mostly luck. My brothers Oscar has lost its color and he spoils the hell out of it, and does weekly 75% water changes.
Glad to find someone with a properly kept oscar! Im tired of explaining to people on youtube why theirs cant stay with the yellow labs in the 20 gallon :)
Yours has VERY nice color, too... Must be the diet. I feed my tiger O hikari cichlid gold + and lots of frozen krill, but he still lost his red
Lol, yeah, lots of folks come up with some pretty bad mixtures. I have temporarily as well, but usually only cause a breeding pair was getting too rough with one another and had to be split. Now I have enough dividers that such things don't have to lead to big problems.
Funny how some O's lose their color no matter how well they are looked after eh? Homer still glows orange, part diet and water changes, part luck/genetics I guess.
Glad you guys like Homer. I think his colour is good because of the frequent water changes and the foods we give him. I try to give him higher end foods like Hikari, Omega One, stuff like that. Plus, live foods like shrimp and earthworms.
