They do have a basking spot, and a heat lamp the hot UV bulb. I still take them out and check out the shells, and skin for any sign of disease or wounds. It's good to take them out of the water completely somewhere they can actually move more 2'x2' for exercise, in the wild they will walk miles from one water source to the next for breeding, ect. I let mine out in the back yard as well from time to time.
why do you take them out the water and dry them off //// just get a good basking spot in the tank with a heat lamp and the turtles will be happier and will come out the water and wont bite you???? try it
