  • Do people honestly believe that "western medicine" killed Nick? Those pills most likely made hss otherwise quite sad life slightly easier, and if not for the pills, he would most likely have taken to other methods. Like it or not.

  • @Ydigisek I'm no expert but I do think there are alternatives to anti depressants. I have seen nothing but bad things come from them. it just seems like a doctors easy solution to a problem.

  • I'm slightly jealous you have Bryter Layter on vinyl. That makes me want to go buy it now. I have all of three of Nick's original albums on CD but nothing beat the atmosphere and feelings vinyl produces.

  • this pics are mine! serch "bryter layter" on flickr by pikon801. thanks.

  • the antidepressants can help if you are truly chemically insane. however don't mix with alcohol and street drugs.

  • Such a moving song the lyrics are priceless, for one who is bi-polar and ive taking more medeciation than you can shake a stick at plus plenty of street drugs im happy to be alive and very lucky to have made it into my 40,s. in one piece Rest in peace Nick u beautiful man.

  • @exposed97 it was anti-depressants that killed him bro :/

  • @exposed97 he didnt die due to drugs, or alcohol. it was an accumulation of antidepressants in his body. back then, those medications were a lot more dangerous. and without certain drugs, some of the most beautiful, wonderful music would never have even been imagined in the first place. its a double edged sword.

  • this is my fave nick drake song..

incredible..such beauty and depth.love the lyrics especially.."i stay indoors beneath the floors"..its flows so wonderfully and meanders but its also quite dark as well in places.like all nick drake songs."butterflies tied to anchors"is how his songs are described by somebody in a book i read about him..very true

  • This is one of his best. The High Llamas have a great cover of this song as well. Nick was a genius. Wish he were here..

  • Who knows what a face is for?

  • blackcerbrus999,look out for a boot leg album, HEAVEN IN A WILD FLOWER,

  • where do you go, when the clock is done, what next, why the beat of the drum.

  • I worry that the 2 top comments might have been by Scientologists. If not, I apologise, but seriously, if you are depressed you can trust a doctor a lot more than you can some random stranger online.

  • I don't like all you people talking about Nick Drake. Nick Drake is part of my universe, not yours! I've got a knife! I'm feeling stabby! Grrr!

  • although this song is very under rated, in my opinion it is his best song.

  • .......

  • always loved this one, love his little wavery vocal at the end - listen out for it. sweet.

  • @hippiegirl1968 Aw, I've always loved that part :)

  • Well when i'm listening Nick's music i feel that i'm a special guy. I have the pleasure to enjoy the greatest things that Nick's have done. Pure soul breaking.

Every single person must head Nick's work, once in life. Just to know what is the perfection, what's folk, what's heaven...

    "steady as a rock"

  • This is what Roger Scruton means speaking of true art: beauty.

  • Nick's Poor Boy, Northern Sky and City Clock are such great tunes. They've lived inside me for over 40 years now. His voice is so passive. Struggles with depression ended his life too soon. He probably never knew how appreciated he was. Thanks VW and AT&T for bringing him back from the dead. This is a style worth exploring in depth.

  • I don't comment often on Youtube, or anywhere for that matter really. But, here I had to add one - a very good friend of me got me into Garland, Drake and various other musical fabulousness even inclusing the Beatles whilst I was at Uni in Liverpool - Nick Drake is absolutel gorgeous. Just the right amount of feeling and mood to play at any time of the day. Lovely lovely lovely. Everything he did...A1. Wish I could sing like him, I can certainly do the guitar bit lol.

  • i'm obsessed with nick drake..this is my favourite song of his..a tough choice..i like the way the song dips an bends and meanders along..the strings are beautiful and haunting...the horns as well give it another gear with nicks guitar in the backround..i love his voice on this,,vulnerable but beautiful as always..love it!

    nice turntable!

  • Wonderful Nick Drake. What a beautiful, haunting melody.

  • I read about nick Drake and specifically Bryter Layter in 1974. I got Five Leaves left shortly thereafter but it took years to find Pink Moon. His music sounds as good now as it did then.

  • Man. Why does this sound like it came out last week? It sounds so far ahead of its time.

  • Awesome song. Kind of similar to 'Spooky' by The Classics IV.

  • @JoeDeceiver good comparison. never thought of it that way, but I think the C IV with Buie and Cobb sharing the helm were one ot the most creative groups of the late 60's. Stormy is a good one too. Glad they took their talents on to ARS. Santana does a nice job on Spooky.

  • Amazing tune, Legend

  • Several years after a breakup I received a cd with this song on it from a former lover (we stayed in contact) who came back several years later drunk to tell me .......I was the one. I love this song, the cd as I will always him.

  • 5 minutes of perfection!

  • whats the brand of the record player ur using - really nice!?

  • @LaWey

It's Technics by Panasonic. Best turntables at the time. I still have mine somewhere in storage.

  • @LaWey the record player is a Toshiba SR-355 / Stanton 681 EEEMk2 phono cartridge.

  • ive just bought the fruit tree box set original on vinyl.cost me a couple of quid but my admiration of nick is deepening all the time.this track is amazing..the arrangement, the lyrics..amazing album..northern sky a close second..although thats pretty much faultless.nicks music has a magic about it

  • Excellent choice. I've had Fruit Tres on vinyl since 1986 and it sounds much much better than the CD box set.

  • One of the most frighteningly beautiful songs of all times for me. Thank you Nick.

  • Though I'd heard about him for over 30 years, I am ashamed to admit I'd never heard Nick's music until today. Talk about worth the wait. Thank you for posting it and for filling in the piece of my musical knowledge that I needed more than I knew.

  • it's 1974 again in London, and Nick's at it again! Blissful memoriesof walking across lush grass with his voice on the breeze.

  • Kids, if a doctor tries to give you anti-depressants, stuff them up his arse. That's what I did. Well, not literally.

  • LITERALLY. IT MUST BE LITERALLY.

  • @joejoe468

    they also save lives

  • @joejoe468 you did the right thing joejoe.. western medicine is a joke and just a ploy to keep us medicated and mindless. So we can become the mindless drones that do what were told. It's not what they do in the mid. east that's why theyre fighting oppression and overpowering governments. while we sit and take all the sh*t that our government feeds us

  • @joejoe468 I have known three people that have killed themselves whilst on a supposed "anti-depressant" including my best friend that I knew since childhood on new years day. Those drugs kill people and make them more irrational and depressed.Nick is a prime example.

  • @joejoe468 evening primrose oil and flax seed oil.

  • I discovered Nick Drake today. Some Dutch singer, Di-rect) from Holland talked about him on television.

  • I adore this :]

  • I think this is one of the most underrated Nick Drake songs. He was a wonderful man and another victim to western medicine.

  • Probably one of his best songs! I'm a big fan of this and One of these things first!

  • @inferkn0w so so true

  • @inferkn0w Come on, folks. Drake ingested all manner of illegal substances - in HEROIC quantities - so it's a bit lame to lay the blame for his death at the feet of anti-depressants, etc. Clearly, Drake was his own worst enemy in many ways, which isn't to deny that more could have been done for him professionally (and medically), but rather to single out one 'cause' for his death is far too simplistic.

  • @Johnny6666 Where do you get the 'Heroic quantities' evidence from?

  • @Johnny6666 Trevor Dann's book, 'A Skin Too Few', anecdotal interview evidence from Drake's friends, etc.

  • Comment removed

  • @inferkn0w Underrated? At least in Spain it was a hit in the early 70s. And well, it was worthy! Every song in this album is great, specially One of Thes Things First and, of course, this great song.

  • @inferkn0w he had a liver disease that is one big contributing factor!!

  • First Nick Drake song I ever heard and liked---that was only about 9 years ago---I'd just gotten off work and was driving to the bank when this song came on and I thought, "This is a pretty song,". Then the DJ said, "That was Nick Drake," and I'm like, so THAT'S Nick Drake---I'd only read about him---never heard anything by him--only my fav. college station,WDET 101.9even played anything by him. Later,I borrowed the CD with this song on it from a co-worker--loved the whole thing--worth buying.

  • nice, i wouldn't have discovered him if it wasn't for that slow day by the computer, i searched for moon and i saw pink moon, love at first sight loved his music ever sience=)

  • lovely story.....

  • What a great track. I'd love to cover it but I don't think I could do it justice.

  • We're gonna have a go at it with our band, with 2 violas and distant lead guitar replacing sax. Gonna try and keep as close to the original as possible. If we get a video ill post it as a response,

Love this song though, dnt wanna spoil it.

  • This is one of my favorite songs, so intense so bleak, so autobiographic...
