Everyone is going to have their own opinions. I LOVE West Side Story and I believe the movie of the musical is very great, but I also think this is great. Everyone needs to agree to disagree. Lea Michelle did an amazing Maria or they would've picked someone else on Glee. Stop your whining.

Lea Michele isn't a good Maria. WAY too poppy, Maria is supposed to be classical not only in the music but in her grace and beauty. I really cant stand Lea Michele as Maria
....She handles all of the gentleness yet with a lyric quality that is remarkable. I hope and wish that the writers would give her more Broadway; it's how she was trained. And more duets with Darren, because in my opinion, he's the only person who can match her.
yeah, but it's weird because I'm pretty sure that Darren has received a pretty classical education and I think Lea sings best when she's singing the more classical, traditional Broadway pieces. I'd rather hear her sing this (or any of these) than the 80s, rock, or pop they have her sing normally. Her voice is spectacular on this...

@TheTitanic4 How are they taking it too far? A lot of the cast was on Broadway at one point or another. Lea was in Les Misérables, Mathew was in Hairspray, and Jenna was in The King and I. I dont think they will do Phantom but if they did I dont think it would be bad.
@AlexaLuvs yes It would. Lea and Jenna (and the rest of the cast) have contemporary training while Phantom of the Opera is a classical musical. The only member of the cast able to handle phantom would be Matt Morrison (Will) as he's the only one with classical training.
They need to stick with contemporary musicals, they stretched it out a little far with West Side Story; Darren Criss could barely make his way through this song and Something Coming had to be rearranged in pop for him.
this is really funny, i remember in season 1 that Rachel left the Glee Club just because Mr. Shuster gave this solo to Tina, now 2 seasons later, Rachel has the song, plas that she is singing it with Blaine. We sometimes dont note this, but Rachel always win

West side story is my favorite musical and i think these two did a beautful job on this. I still kind of wish they had let tina sing it though lol. Also i wish this version wasnt so slow... Imo its also about excitement. Leas voice is beautiful but shes a mezzo not a soprano and its not right for the part lol -.-

i don't know why mercedes is making so a big deal about it. You can also see it from the other side, when rachel is busy with her musical, mercedes can get all the solos in glee :P And rachels voice is way better in this, am i right?:P

@BroadwayAlexia that's not a totally fair comparison. Tina was meant to sing it weakly as a part of the story whereas Rachel was actually suppose to have a good performance.
@BroadwayAlexia Couldn't agree with you more. While I think other cast members should be given solos, when it comes to any Broadway tune that's Lea Michelle's territory. She came to the show from Broadway (as did Matt Morrison). Look at some of the guests on the show also from Broadway: Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenoweth, Jonathan Goff (who did a musical opposite Lea before appearing on Glee). What surprises me is that Darren Criss does Broadway numbers so well with very little stage training.
@SteveAndrade623 He's starting How To Succeed In Buisness for a three week run in January, and he has written around four or five musical stage productions. That could help him, too. ;-P I agree though, for someone who never really had Broadway aspirations, he does it so well.
I grew up in theater thanks to my father acting semi-professionally, so I have seen several versions of this show, and I have to say it: Darren did not let me down! I love this. He nailed the song, in my opinion. :-) If he and Lea ever want to do this on Broadway, I'm THERE.

I don't think Darren and Lea's voices mesh very well together, then again I don't think many of the guys voices go with any of the girls. I think all the girls sound amazing together (example: A Boy Like That, I Feel Pretty/Unpretty) and I can't actually think of any duet couples that actually sound good with the boys other than Jenna/Kevin and Amber/Kevin. This still sounds amazing though :P
The only reason I'm pissed off by this song is that in the actual version it's much longer and a big medley of all the characters, instead of just the main melody.
@spiderpig12296 Well there's two versions of Tonight in West Side Story, the one that Tony and Maria sing alone on the fire escape and then the quintet that all the characters sing. This would be the fire escape version.

I was confused when I saw they were singing this! They never repeat songs they've already sang... Tina sang this in season 1 when Rachel quit the club because Maria was her part... "Natalie wood was a jew you knw?" Briefly later Arite says.. "The more often she storm out of rehersal the less impact it has..." But watever this is amazing! I've been waiting for a non-alchohal induced duet bewtween these two!
This version is ok. As a legit soprano, I hate a belting Maria. The point of a lyric soprano doing the role is not to get the pitches right, but to achieve a pure sound for the ingenue, which is lost with a strong belt. Nice version to introduce people to musicals, but once they hear other versions, they'll fall in love with those!! :D
@Gleek1able I'm not saying she's not good, she just doesn't fit the role. Her high notes are pure, but her low notes are too strong. Being a belter, you lose the essence of the pure soprano voice, which Bernstein intended for Maria (as opposed to a mezzo for Anita). It is a distinction that stresses characterisation (Cosette & Eponine in Les Mis). Cosette sung by a mezzo doesn't feel quite innocent and naive, does it? :) Maria is so sweet and young; the pure voice should add to her character. :)

Unless, like you say, we find out in the next episode that Emma hasn't completed school, and can therefore be a part of Glee Club again , like Kristin Chenoweth (April Rhodes)...
Come to think of it, if April came back, she'd make a lovely Maria (not considering her physical age in Glee!!!) :P
people need to stop complaining that tina should have sang the part. she is not playing maria therefore should not sing it. if tina wanted it she should have auditioned.
I think what I love most about this is that it showcases their full voices and not just the pop type stuff that they can do. It shows their theatre roots and what diversity they can bring. I vote more Lea high notes and more Darren low register!!

Am I the only one a tad upset by the somewhat faster tempo in this rendition? The other WSS numbers seem to have been rendered as originally laid out, but this has a popier feel..... I don't know.

Glee has done so many amazing covers of incredible songs! I thought the most spectacular of them all was Somewhere. I was, apparently, wrong! Nothing they've done until now can top this! Darren's voice has a warmth in it that I've never noticed at this level before. It sounds like it's coming from deep inside him! And Lea's incredible voice sounds so soft and she hits all the notes so gently! I want to cry every time I listen to this! Glee did an AMAZING job!!!

I feel Like they should have not done this version of tonight cause A) Tina did it season 1, which yes was't at its best, but whatevs, but 2) they should have done the Quintet Version of Tonight, Featuring Rachel, Blaine, Santana, Mike, and Puck. That would have literally been amazing. And it would have been a great finale song for the episode.
@DramaDude926 I guess the reason they didn't do the Quintet version is because Maria is required to sing a high C (which mezzos, and therefore Lea, can't sing; atleast not in a pure head voice)...If you notice, all the songs sung by Lea from West Side Story are low, compared to the ones she didn't sing (I Feel Pretty, Tonight Quintet). :D
@golden0girl0me ughh, I don't know, I'm sure they could have changed the note she sings at the end. I feel like even though the show is of course very Rachel/Maria heavy, it would have been a better way to feature some of the other characters. Especially Mike, who has a story about how his father doesn't approve, and yet he sings nothing in the episode when his father see's the show. If he sang, in the Quintet, they could have showed us the fathers reactions, which they love to do on this show

However, if they did happen do show a small version of that song, for Kurt since he is Krupke, Mike wouldn't be singing it, cause Riff is dead at that point in the show. That song is sung By Action, Diesel, and Baby John.
@DramaDude926 You never know...the movie version has Riff too, since it happens in place of Cool, and since they did America the movie way, they may do that too :) One can only hope!! I'd also like to see Maria :D

But in my opinion i think it would have been cool to release a glee cast version of the whole cd, although I am not sure they would have been allowed to due to copyrights, but who knows, it would be nice. But i feel like they could have made one big medly of some of the other songs that weren't released as singles.

@brnigrlfl624 Really. I felt that Tina's voice was a perfect fit for the song until the last note, which of course was done intentionally for story purposes. And I think it's really unfair to take one of her solos and basically go "Do Over!" with someone else doing the solo. And Blaine's voice is mediocre at best, and even still he gets drowned out by Rachel, who constantly overpowers her duet partners. Sorry, the only thing I agree with you on is "no comparison."
@coralmeredith but to be fair in that episode her character was an inconfident singer so she was clearly scripted to throw the song. the real jenna has a broadway background and definitely can hit that note easily.

@SailorPinkRanger They are also redoing "I Kissed A Girl" in a few episodes time, but Tina sings part of it. Hopefully they actually show it.

No comparison between Lea and Jenna please, Jenna has a good voice, but , Holy crap, Lea is awesome! And when she sing this song with Darren, it's just ... Magnificent. Perfect Tony and perfect Maria!

@BroadwayAlexia that's not a totally fair comparison. Tina was meant to sing it weakly as a part of the story whereas Rachel was actually suppose to have a good performance.

@BroadwayAlexia Couldn't agree with you more. While I think other cast members should be given solos, when it comes to any Broadway tune that's Lea Michelle's territory. She came to the show from Broadway (as did Matt Morrison). Look at some of the guests on the show also from Broadway: Idina Menzel, Kristin Chenoweth, Jonathan Goff (who did a musical opposite Lea before appearing on Glee). What surprises me is that Darren Criss does Broadway numbers so well with very little stage training.

@SteveAndrade623 He's starting How To Succeed In Buisness for a three week run in January, and he has written around four or five musical stage productions. That could help him, too. ;-P I agree though, for someone who never really had Broadway aspirations, he does it so well.

I grew up in theater thanks to my father acting semi-professionally, so I have seen several versions of this show, and I have to say it: Darren did not let me down! I love this. He nailed the song, in my opinion. :-) If he and Lea ever want to do this on Broadway, I'm THERE.

I don't think Darren and Lea's voices mesh very well together, then again I don't think many of the guys voices go with any of the girls. I think all the girls sound amazing together (example: A Boy Like That, I Feel Pretty/Unpretty) and I can't actually think of any duet couples that actually sound good with the boys other than Jenna/Kevin and Amber/Kevin. This still sounds amazing though :P

The only reason I'm pissed off by this song is that in the actual version it's much longer and a big medley of all the characters, instead of just the main melody.

@spiderpig12296 Well there's two versions of Tonight in West Side Story, the one that Tony and Maria sing alone on the fire escape and then the quintet that all the characters sing. This would be the fire escape version.

Tina sung the song for 20 seconds. Stop complaining. Jenna is amazing but Lea did the song good and the directors wanted her to do it. SHE IS MARIAH. Also Jenna hasn't been treated badly.. she knows what she's getting when she signs her contract.. including MONEY

I was confused when I saw they were singing this! They never repeat songs they've already sang... Tina sang this in season 1 when Rachel quit the club because Maria was her part... "Natalie wood was a jew you knw?" Briefly later Arite says.. "The more often she storm out of rehersal the less impact it has..." But watever this is amazing! I've been waiting for a non-alchohal induced duet bewtween these two!

This version is ok. As a legit soprano, I hate a belting Maria. The point of a lyric soprano doing the role is not to get the pitches right, but to achieve a pure sound for the ingenue, which is lost with a strong belt. Nice version to introduce people to musicals, but once they hear other versions, they'll fall in love with those!! :D

@Gleek1able I'm not saying she's not good, she just doesn't fit the role. Her high notes are pure, but her low notes are too strong. Being a belter, you lose the essence of the pure soprano voice, which Bernstein intended for Maria (as opposed to a mezzo for Anita). It is a distinction that stresses characterisation (Cosette & Eponine in Les Mis). Cosette sung by a mezzo doesn't feel quite innocent and naive, does it? :) Maria is so sweet and young; the pure voice should add to her character. :)

@Gleek1able Oh, I can only think of Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz)...but she's a mezzo too, and her Tonight has the exact same faults as Lea's....so I'd say, no, Lea fit the role best out of all the choices...:)
Unless, like you say, we find out in the next episode that Emma hasn't completed school, and can therefore be a part of Glee Club again , like Kristin Chenoweth (April Rhodes)...
Come to think of it, if April came back, she'd make a lovely Maria (not considering her physical age in Glee!!!) :P

And Darren has no problems keeping up with Lea AT ALL that first note he sang gave me shivers, it's that good.

In season 1 Tina didn't hit the last note because it was scripted that way, and as an actress she needed to sing it the way requested!

I think what I love most about this is that it showcases their full voices and not just the pop type stuff that they can do. It shows their theatre roots and what diversity they can bring. I vote more Lea high notes and more Darren low register!!
Makes me even more sad that there is no way I'll make it to see Darren in January...

Am I the only one a tad upset by the somewhat faster tempo in this rendition? The other WSS numbers seem to have been rendered as originally laid out, but this has a popier feel..... I don't know.
Still sung very nicely by both Darren and Lea though.

People saying this is Tina's song get over it fuck sake the song is OWNED by the play west side story and BLAINE and RACHEL are the leads so of course they will sing the song and it's a duet and they did an amazing job this version was way better than Tina's so if you do not like this version simple JUST GO AND LISTEN TO TINA'S VERSION !!! @korloser high five. just enjoy. gee every time theres a cover theres complaining. either its compared and torn apart to the original, or of course the auto tune police arrive. just enjoy these two singing a beautiful song and dont look for stuff. it lessens the value and the talent of these two.

Glee has done so many amazing covers of incredible songs! I thought the most spectacular of them all was Somewhere. I was, apparently, wrong! Nothing they've done until now can top this! Darren's voice has a warmth in it that I've never noticed at this level before. It sounds like it's coming from deep inside him! And Lea's incredible voice sounds so soft and she hits all the notes so gently! I want to cry every time I listen to this! Glee did an AMAZING job!!!

I feel Like they should have not done this version of tonight cause A) Tina did it season 1, which yes was't at its best, but whatevs, but 2) they should have done the Quintet Version of Tonight, Featuring Rachel, Blaine, Santana, Mike, and Puck. That would have literally been amazing. And it would have been a great finale song for the episode.

@DramaDude926 I guess the reason they didn't do the Quintet version is because Maria is required to sing a high C (which mezzos, and therefore Lea, can't sing; atleast not in a pure head voice)...If you notice, all the songs sung by Lea from West Side Story are low, compared to the ones she didn't sing (I Feel Pretty, Tonight Quintet). :D

@golden0girl0me ughh, I don't know, I'm sure they could have changed the note she sings at the end. I feel like even though the show is of course very Rachel/Maria heavy, it would have been a better way to feature some of the other characters. Especially Mike, who has a story about how his father doesn't approve, and yet he sings nothing in the episode when his father see's the show. If he sang, in the Quintet, they could have showed us the fathers reactions, which they love to do on this show

It would be a shame to take it away, just because she can't sing it :D But yeah, I hope Mike sings a RIff song (personally, I'm hoping it's Gee, Officer Krupke!!). I wouldn't mind a second round of Cool, though, I can never get enough of that song!! :D

However, if they did happen do show a small version of that song, for Kurt since he is Krupke, Mike wouldn't be singing it, cause Riff is dead at that point in the show. That song is sung By Action, Diesel, and Baby John.

@golden0girl0me That is true, i am just so used to the stage version since i was in it years ago. But in my opinion i think it would have been cool to release a glee cast version of the whole cd, although I am not sure they would have been allowed to due to copyrights, but who knows, it would be nice. But i feel like they could have made one big medly of some of the other songs that weren't released as singles.

@brnigrlfl624 Really. I felt that Tina's voice was a perfect fit for the song until the last note, which of course was done intentionally for story purposes. And I think it's really unfair to take one of her solos and basically go "Do Over!" with someone else doing the solo. And Blaine's voice is mediocre at best, and even still he gets drowned out by Rachel, who constantly overpowers her duet partners. Sorry, the only thing I agree with you on is "no comparison."

@coralmeredith but to be fair in that episode her character was an inconfident singer so she was clearly scripted to throw the song. the real jenna has a broadway background and definitely can hit that note easily.
