The worst thing they did for the american cut was to change the original ending. Since they can't bear something else than a complete happy ending, they used the cuted footage from an other sequence where Jacques plays with the dolphin he "stole" from the Sea Park.
In USA, Jacques will never reach the sirens' realm guided by the dolphin as he dreamed of.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for cutting this.
I have the VHS copy, the same one that showed on cable, with the original Bill Conti soundtrack. I was excited when they came out with the DVD, but it has some other sountrack on it that does not belong to Bill Conti and it takes the original emotion away from the movie. And now , nobody can get to Hollywood to tell them to release the Bill COnti version on DVD.

cajuboy's post, re-posted since it's so pertinent:
"Eric Serra's music is too cool hip, and jazzy. The Bill Conti version is more sentimental and inspirational. Perhaps this explains the difference in a nutshell between the European and American audiences that the 2 movie versions were made for."
His point hits the nail right on the head. Although, it's still puzzling why Europeans don't appreciate the sentimentality. It's disappointing of them. Perhaps they haven't heard the full score...
I think Bill's version is beautiful and inspiring but cannot be compared in any way to Eric's version. The American version was only intended to the U.S. and who knows to Canada. I live in Brazil and, as "the rest of the world", we saw the European version distribuited by 20th Century Fox. In fact I saw the American version too and... I think they ruined the whole thing.
Some people prefer champagne, some other people prefer Dr. Pepper. Tu n'as pas du bon gout. C'est tout simplement ça. Keep your Bill Conti version lolol
I'm American and this is my favorite film and I own all the soundtracks, versions and cuts. I think the European release of the film is overall superior. Both soundtracks are awesome and both give the film a unique feel but I think that Eric Serra's better reflects the film.
I think Conti's version is terrible, I have only seen the original Director's Cut (European) version with the original Eric Serra score...which may be why I prefer it, I guess it's down to personal taste. But someone posted that this is the only true score for the film, which is quite stupid as Luc Besson uses Eric Serra to score EVERY SINGLE one of his films. Anyways to sum up Eric Serra's version makes Conti's version sound ridiculous and dated.
It's the US version of the movie, with the US version of the score by Bill Conti. There's a different European cut on DVD, matched with a different score by Eric Serra. Some people prefer one over the other; both are great in my opinion. US version is only available on VHS, and its soundtrack is only available via bootleg (I obtained both on eBay).

El video es no mucho gusto. El video es no bonito porque es bonita. El video esta para cabarones, y no mas. Por que? Esta mis amores, asi asi...asi asi...
Eric Serra's music is too cool hip, and jazzy. The Bill Conti version is more sentimental and inspirational. Perhaps this explains the difference in a nutshell between the European and American audiences that the 2 movie versions were made for.
Bill Conti's version, which conveys the emotions of the film better for me, will always be part of Big Blue . Beautiful. We liked Jean Reno's portrayal of Enzo so much we named our pet pomeranian Enzo :)
euhh .... sacrilège ! je n'avais jamais entendu cette musique sur ce film, et je préfère celle d'éric serra qui est beaucoup plus poêtique à mon goût, celle là ressemble à une musique de noël ! XD
oh.... my god! I had never heard this music on this film, and I prefer that of éric Serra which is much more poetic with my taste, that there resembles a music of Christmas! XD
Simply put, and with all respect to Eric Serra, Bill Conti's Version in much better as well as the entire American Recut. The Director's cut is waaaaay too long and has parts that do not add value to the film.
I bought Eric Serra's soundtrack and the PAL version of the movie while I lived in France and I love the extended version. However when I lived in Japan I saw a trailer for Le Grand Bleu with an alternate ending!! Has anyone ever heard of that before? Unfortunately I didn't see that version and I've been kicking myself ever since.
The Bill Conti soundtrack (intro to be exact) is what made me fall in love with this film. I'd like to watch the French version one day, but the American version is the one that lives in my heart.
I expected worse from Bill Conti's score. Anyway, Eric Serra's music is the one and only music for this film, and I can't imagine it with any other score.
Bill Conti Version is really the ONLY true music for this awesome movie. However I have traveled the world to find a copy of the soundtrack and I don't belive it exists. Only on the movie have I been able to hear the music. Any info on Conti's music on a CD??
Your people are out of your mind! Bill Conti U.S. version is totally better. The music touches the senses as it is very inspirational. Eric Sierra dilutes the movie with music that doesnt flow.
Better. I always hated how the theatrical trailer used recycled music from ALIENS (!). They tried so hard to market the film in the USA - they really ended up ruining it.
Your video is nice but too short and wow I been looking for the soundtrack of this movie for long, but the one made by Bill Conti, I think is better than the one made by Eric Serra.
The soundtrack made by Eric Serra is good can't say no but
the one made by Bill Conti it's good too, like the music used in this trailer and played at the end of the movie (USA version), I'd been looking for this soundtrack for a long time.

i guess it depends mostly on which one you saw first. I saw the American/Conti version first so I prefer it to the International/Serra version.

La musique de Bill Conti me fait penser à une bande son de vieille série US pourri, Eric Serra est de loin le meilleur pour la musique du Grand Bleu.
