With the Governor of New Hampshire offering land to those who would settle the New Hampshire Grants (Now Vermont), many came; British, Scots, and others. They took with them parts of their own herritage and build their future in the wilderness. With them went the Allan family with Ethan to lead the Green Mountain Boys to preserve their farms from encroaching New Yorkers who were sold a bill of good by their governor. Their boots removed, the damn yorkers marched back to NY barefoot.
The brave souls who created America and won our liberty and independence deserve to be remembered in gratitude for what they passed on to us. This song should give us a glimpse of who these were...regular people who loved freedom . Now it is up to us.
none of those. wyllie - 5 members of the family were covenanters who fought at the battle of bothwell bridge taken prisoner and drowned on the crown of london ship while being taken to be plantation slaves. i do have relations called johnstone,McNish and McClean
Your right my mistake mate. My mention of the mountain men was in referance to the ullster scots of the southern states. Should maybe have put my post on a song more related to that. Nice song though.
Yeah, I'm 1/8 Ulster Scotish, but that side doesn't come from Vermont. If you have the names Johnston, Porteus, Graham, or Hamilton in your family tree we might be related.
the declaration of independance was printed by an ulster scot, john dunlop, read in public by a first generation ulster scot american colonal john nixon, and the first signature came from another scots irish presbyterian john hancock.it was also first published in the protestant ulster news letter. only fitting as the brave scots irish mountain men made a massive contribution to american independance. american by the grace of god.
I didn't know that about John Stark. I guess he's as close as you can get to a Scotch Irish Green Mountain boy since he was commander at Bennington. I'd have opted to go with Robert Rogers and fight for the British like most of my ancestors. Just look at Nova Scotia and the other maritime provinces, that's what this country would be like if it remained British. Now look at it.
Even if it remained British each of the regions would still be different. The South or the Appalachians would still not look like the Maritimes even if the British won. My mothers family fought in the Pennsylvania militia during the revolution. I would not be proud if they fought for the British or loyalist forces who lost through lack of popular support.
Not physically, but culturally. Going to the Martimes is like going back in time. The girls dress modestly, the people listen to folk rather than rap and Britney Spears, and no one seems to be obsessed with useless sports which 99.9% of men in this forsaken country are. The rebels had huge French and even Spanish backing an almost always outnumbered the British during their victories
The "Patriots" rebelled against their government (that saved them from French harassment and expansion in 1759 at great expense), therefore they were rebels.
The "Tories" were loyal to their government, therefore they were loyalists.
There were plenty of good reasons to rebel, mostly over taxation and trade restrictions. America has a few things over Canada such as the gun laws (unless you have the misfortune of living in Massachusetts, New York, or California), but the freedoms seem to be going the same place the culture went, right down the drain. Plus, loyalists had the opportunity to fight in the Napoleonic wars or in India, I would have enjoyed that.

As far as I know Vermont isn't known for having many Ulster Scots.

Rogers Rangers were often from New Hampshire and often of Scotch-Irish.

Robert Rogers and his Rangers were loyalists.

They were the Queens Ranger in the revolution. John Stark was also a member of Rogers Rangers. They were all loyalist in the French and Indian war.
