do you want to emulate xp under linux? just go with xp then, emulated SO are the slowest things in this world

and forget about wine, it's impossible to run 3ds with it. these programs are huge whales hungry of ram and system calls

Make sure you're on the Mental Ray renderer, otherwise some options don't appear.

As for the snow, just make it using a gradient map for it's opacity and noise it up for a great dispersion effect :)

how can you move with thoose lines? I mean, when you move or rotate you get 3 lines. So you can decide one side to move, rotate, scale, etc. I only got a free-move and stuff.

You might've accidentally hidden the 'gizmos' (that is a technical term). Go to Customize > Preferences > Gizmos and make sure they're turned on.

That was a pretty good tutorial on the basic of particle effects in 3ds max. If u want to make super-realistic fire and smoke particles then check out Fume FX, it rocks! I think they made armageddon with it!
