  • hi, sorry to be a pain, but could u send me a message to tell more abo what he is like?

im thinking about getting a ex race horse (it will be my first horse).

    thanks

  • does this place have a websight?or contact information,i'm looking 4 a horse!

  • i found another ex race thoroughbred rescue ...check it out its under coiby151 its pretty cool.beautful horse by the way

  • I believe I have seen the name on the alex brown forums are you from there at all? if you are we appreciate all you are doing. I would offer but I have my hands full with one of the 13 warmbloods that needed homes and with willow from avalon mist farms.

  • Its hard to buy a racehorse to keep cause their sOoOoOoOoO expensive to have them retrained, even kept, thanks to the economy. People who are lucky enough to affored a horse should get an ex. racer.

  • This is such a sweet but sad video. Your lovely owners who ever the horse belongs to know and its sad because i think that all the race horses out there have just been trained by running round in cirlces and being whipped, and being beaten when they don't win. Their not horses, their just beasts, beasts that can be re-born with our help, i agree. Rescue a race horse :)

  • how much work is it exactly to take on an ex racehorse? i have a lot of people telling me never to do that and not to wish that on myself and i would never get to the shows and they are on steroids and so on and so on.... but they seem to be one of the only things in my budget and i hear a lot of people talking about how amazing they have become and how glad they are that they went with one. I want to do hunter jumpers with him/her and i am willing to put in the time it takes. suggestions?

  • well my friend bought and ex race horse that someone else saved and got the basics down on him and hes a great eventer now.

its definatly worth it, your just gona have to work for it. or have him sent to a prof trainer.

  • I just bought an ex-racer last August (my first horse). Things have been going great with her and I'm about to take her to her first show next weekend. I think if you basically start the horse as if it were a yearling, you'll be fine. Plus your ex-racer will be already used to carrying a rider, you just need to retrain to the commands that you want. It's very rewarding. Just remember that they're very forward horses and not initially used to having your leg on their side.

  • I think with the right horse and rider it can work out great. You just have to make sure you are experienced enough to handle it and that you have a lot of back up support i.e. a good trainer. An ex race horse can also come with alot of baggage mental as well as physical i.e.they can break down easily and their legs aren't always the best. and pls take evryones advice wich a pinch of salt ...i could be anyone. :)

  • Thanks! Yea, I am not worried too much about the experience part, since i have helped and brought quite a few grren horses along myself, and I am going to have a lot of help from a certified trainer, but I am also debating using my seven year old trail horse.... She is classifiably a mustang, although there is debate that she has arab or morgan in her, some paint, and who knows?! We think some heavy horse too, although she is very graceful. the only thing stopping me is can she do it...?

  • you'll never know till you try ! but if you want to be really succesful a thoroughbred typically would probably have more potential jumping with how high and getting a fast time but maybe your mustang would be calmer and more reliable...its a dilema thats for sure, let me know how you go ;)

  • Well righ now it looks like I am using my baby(!) cause my coach is actually really excited about her. In my stupid western trail riding days (long past now) i actually took her up for some field races against some of my old friends and a lot of them had thoroughbred types, and I can tell you no one came close to her. She blew them all away. But i know that thats only flat out on a field, and in the jumping ring that is much different. She is a beautiful mover, but no training so not at all >>

  • balances yet due to a lack of training, and she is sooo flashy to look at, especially when she is in shape. She is built more uphill than anything, though not as uphill as some thoroughbreds. She is very smart, (she could do my precal!) lol jk but she is very sound of mind and sweet and i love her to death really. she is very very attached to me and the vet said she went into a slight depression when she was being used by someone else and not me. Shes my baby girl!! <3

  • She sounds wonderful if i had to choose between my boy and another horse i would choose him no matter what even if the other horse was way better. You also probably have a better relationship with her and that goes a long way when ur competing and training. good luck :)

  • Thx! I have it all set up to take her on June 1 so we will see how it goes! I think things will go great... or i hope they will!!!

  • well.. it depends on its temper....they do eventually grow out of racing, my sister is selling and ex racehorse she got him in a paddock he was in the paddock for four years no one rode him cos apperntly he was physco

ive ridden him b4, but if u look at one u should trial it or not buy it

  • I I`m so happy that you and Christy save this horses your the best.

  • i bought an ex race horse about 1 1/2 years ago and i taught him everything he went so well and we got such a bond then all of a sudden he went laime and he has been lame ever since then it broke my heart

  • that was REALLY well done...wow. That's such a great little video. I love how u put those lines from sea Biscuit in there. very well done.

  • Wow, thank you!

  • Hiya, ive been offered an ex-racer, but it isnt totally schooled on. I was wondering if you could give me any advice wether i should accept the horse and school it on myself, or leave it because it isnt totally schooled?

    Thanks,

    --Lyra

  • Make sure you will have the time you need to work with him/her. And definitely do some research about the problems that will come with your ottb.

  • i have an eleven yr old thorughbred gelding off the track and when we got him all he wanted to do was run in circles but with time and patients he is now on his way to becoming the next hits ocala champion..i wouldnt give him for the world.

  • i always keep my race horses even if they were too slow

  • thanks :-)
